Yes, I know IBU for reading Daily Mail links, but I just don't understand where they get people like this woman from.

I'm pregnant at the moment and this article really made me sad, it's just so undignified for everyone involved.

Spot on Cory. You have to see the context behind what she is saying.

Why shouldn't she have said it? Because it doesnt fit in with the assumption that all parents with special needs are angels on earth, who never get tired, never feel worn out by a system where there is no support?

PoppyAmex · 29/05/2013 09:58

Suffolk that's how I read it too, with a hint of "why did she keep breeding if she knew she was defective"

OP posts:
cory · 29/05/2013 09:59

Presumably she didn't know how this article was going to be phrased: she was desperate to be given a chance to speak, she didn't get to read the proofs. It's not really her loss of dignity; it's what the vuile journalist did to it.

AllYoursBabooshka · 29/05/2013 10:00

X post.

Your OP does come across as a wee bit judgy.

That's probably just down to the unpleasantness of the article though. It touches all sorts of nerves.

ShadeofViolet · 29/05/2013 10:02

I bet the journo said to her 'lets get your story out there so people understand, and help all the other carers.'

Then they spun it into a load of shite about how ADHD isnt real, how all of her children would be fine if she wasnt a serial divorcee and how selfish she is for sending him away.

Just so it fits the DM agenda.

AllYoursBabooshka · 29/05/2013 10:04

They always manage to work in the "Lazy Parent" bollocks, don't they.

More like lazy journalism.

"I think what is meant is that if you knew you had a hereditary condition that would likely be passed on, and that was already making family life hard you wouldn't go onto having a fourth child. "

But how would she have known? The article made it clear that the lady was not diagnosed until adulthood; is there any reason to believe she knew about the possible hereditary aspect of ADHD until her later children were diagnosed.

I have a hereditary condition which affects the lives of my dc. The reason I know so much about it is because the genetics department told me in the year after my second child was diagnosed. But it was not a given that I would get to see a genethicist; not everybody does.

cory · 29/05/2013 10:07

And ds was diagnosed at the age of 10. A bit late then for family control.

PoppyAmex · 29/05/2013 10:09

AllYours I think you're right, the phrasing on the OP is not right - I was sitting here wondering about the DM's research methods when I wrote that;

Mainly how they identify these interviewees and manage to convince them they'll be given a fair chance to put their case forward. You would have to be pretty desperate, because how many of us trust an institution like the DM to reproduce our words fairly?

As a 'mother' you either have to be blissfully happy, self sacrificing and humble or have post natal depression.

Heaven forbid you express an opinion that doesn't fit with these misogynistic guidelines.

She has said how she feels. She has the right to feel anyway she feels AND express how she feels. She has done nothing wrong.

The DM disgusts me.

Personally I think you should not be able to have children if you have fair skin. Your children are at a much higher risk of burning, developing skin cancer and costing the honest hardworking tax-payer millions in treatment.

cory · 29/05/2013 10:17

She probably was desperate, Poppy. She may well be a naive person who believes what she is told.

ShadeofViolet · 29/05/2013 10:18

I bet no one would tell Jamie Oliver he shouldnt have had 4 children.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 29/05/2013 10:18

Totally agree with YesAnastasia.

Corny perhaps minifingers was just making an observation? Indeed the poor lad does display some of the facial characteristics, though whether or not he has the condition is anyone's guess.

She said "looks like" not "has".

PoppyAmex · 29/05/2013 10:21

cory you're probably right.

I wonder if that article raised any awareness for the challenges of being a carer / parent of a SN child?

I suppose we're discussing it here, but I wonder how the general public would perceive it?

hiddenhome · 29/05/2013 10:22

Ds1 was badly affected by his ADHD up until a couple of years ago and I can understand how she feels. It's nerve wracking raising these kids and I've lost about 12 years of my life, have stress related illness and can only function with the help of antidepressants.

It is a shit experience and other people have very little idea Sad

LayMeDown · 29/05/2013 10:22

What a fucking disgusting article.

Horrible, snide, judgemental, underhand, smug, ignorant fucking commentary.

What a horrible person that journalist is. I am fucking fuming.

God love that poor woman.
I know exactly what she meant by that coment, and she is right.

If a dog was attacking you daily you would have it put down. She has no one to protect her from being physically attacked. And she knows its only getting worse.

TapselteerieO · 29/05/2013 10:22

I cannot open a dm link, but I feel for the woman in the article, we think that we live in a civilised society but the way that vulnerable people in this country are treated seems anything but civilised.

That poor woman.

Crap, every single post I write is coming out wrong - I just sounded like a really shitty journalist there, I'm sorry.

I have baby brain and have been speaking my native language pretty intensively lately, so I'm struggling to make sense in English.
