Asda-To think this is stealing?

Shopped with Asda online for many years and i wake up this morning to find they have taken my payment twice.
I am absolutely livid beyond belief they are allowed to do this.
I know i will get the money back eventually, but they have taken my bank into the red aswell. I phoned the bank and they said Asdas have only just started doing this and i could be waiting up to a week to get my money back.
Aibu to think this is stealing and that i should have been pre-warned when ordering that their policy had changed?
Just feel robbed this morning and now my family's trip is ruinedSad

This problem was in a thread last year. It certainly put me off shopping with Asda, and tbh, I haven't darkened their door since.

I think we get your point manicmanda Shock

Not read the whole thread so someone may have already said something similar but I worked in a bank 5ish years ago and this was a known issue with Asda when shopping was done online. It's not that they have taken the money twice as such or placed it in a holding bank but that they had authorised it twice meaning that the money was held up, so it hadn't taken people overdrawn as it never actually debited.

I can't say for certain whether all banks can see it but at the bank I worked you could see transactions that had been authorised, just the dates, amounts & time of the transaction but not who it was too. Although we weren't technically meant to delete transactions on that particular screen because the risk was that the customer would use the money and then be left overdrawn when it debited 2-3 days later, when the customer said it was for Asda some of us would delete the transaction if the transaction was taking up available funds (you could usually see 2 amounts authorised for the same amount). We would only delete it on the understanding that the customer was aware the risks were that Asda could follow through. However, I never saw 2 amounts debit in any of these cases, one of them did normally just drop off the system - but if people have no other money in their account and it ties it up for 7-10 days it can obviously be frustrating to wait.

It may be worth speaking to the bank again and asking if they can see the transaction, explaining it won't actually debit the account and if they can delete it. My understanding is that Asda wouldn't be able to replace the money as it's not actually debited the account, and so it's up to the bank (this was 5 years a go though so things may have changed since).

NotGoingOut17 · 29/08/2014 19:16

manicmanda - Again my experience is 5 years out of date so you may want to check with your bank but when I worked in a bank direct debits come off your balance not your available balance so should go through okay. i.e. if you have £100 in your ac the fact that you have a £90 card payment authorised shouldn't stop a dd going through because your balance is £100 so you should be okay with regards to your direct debits. But please do check as I haven't worked in a bank for a while now

It would still cause problems if the £90 card payment went through as then you'd be left overdrawn but when there is a double transaction and you've had assurance from Asda, I wouldn't expect it to debit, the same way as when you give your card as a guarantee for a hotel etc.

The available balance does impact on card transactions though as would recognise although you have £100, £90 is waiting to debit.

This problem was in a thread last year.

Yes, it was this one.

manicmanda · 29/08/2014 19:37

thanks for that ! still Asda are nothing short of theifs and nothing but liars- too scared to ever shop with them again - now its just a waiting game until the transaction is reveresed. They didnt do it when i have a usual 50 shop, they decide to do it when cupboards are empty for big shop and ready for 1st of month when all the direct debits start coming in. Just wanna hide and hope it goes away :(

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 29/08/2014 19:37

Oh, the irony.

I've only been into my local ASDA a couple of times because it's dirty and the staff are rude.

Went once and happened to see someone I vaguely knew working on the till. Went to them so I could say hello and we chatted as he zapped my shopping. Angry supervisor turns up, has a go at me for using the till of someone I know and tells us that she has to supervise the transaction now due to possible theft.

Theft? Me? Shock

Left my shopping there. Told her I'd shop somewhere else if that was her attitude.

Who the fuck do they think they are? Hardly Harrods, are they? What's with the snooty looking down their nose at people attitude from the staff?

Disgusting!

Haven't RTFT but just use a credit card and pay it off in full by direct debit each month. Doesn't matter then if they take more as it won't come out of your bank account at the time.

This happened to me several times last year with Asda, so I switched to Tesco online shopping which I'd never had a problem with before. Then they did it, taking the money twice. Which meant that the ghost payment they took first left not enough money in my account so when they came to take the actual payment there wasn't enough money in my account and they cancelled the food order. So I was left with no food and no money. Thank god for my dad who I borrowed money off, it took nearly 3 weeks for the money to go back into my account! I will NEVER order a food shop online ever again. I just brave the supermarket now.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 29/08/2014 19:51

Never in my life will i shop there again, bargains or not!

There are no bargains though.

You might get the odd bit of 'rollback' stuff but ALL supermarkets will have that same product reduced.

ASDA never have BOGOFs or 241s.

And there's no clubcard/nectar card so you don't get anything back except attitude.

And what's with those green Tiddlywinks they give you? My dad turned up at my house after being in ASDA and asked me what it was for. What are they for? Do you collect them??

No more Asda for us. This thread has mirrored what irl people have told me. I think they are basically stealing your money. Ocado is much better and also the same price or cheaper than asda!

It should be illegal though for any company to take payment twice, which is what they are effectively doing, even if they do eventually return the 2nd payment.

manicmanda · 29/08/2014 20:00

Trouble is, certain times we rely on home shopping because of certain situations- cant believe i have read threads about them goin back years and in 2011 they were "supposed" to put thing right due to their new system- here we are 3 years later with the same thing goin on .......... makes you wonder how they are still getting away with it!!!

HappyAgainOneDay · 29/08/2014 20:24

KingJoffrey

The green tokens are for you to put into a good cause large box. There are normally three by the exit door and you choose which cause you want to support. They are usually local outfits eg Scouts or a local nursery school. Asda gives the causes an amount of money based on the number of tokens in each box.

LisaMed · 29/08/2014 20:29

This happened to a neighbour of mine. She slit her wrists. She survived but has permanent damage.

eddielizzard · 29/08/2014 20:34

A Load of south africans who cant do their job

huh?

kappadelta · 29/08/2014 20:34

Oh dear. I've had a few problems with asda recently.
The most recent one is regarding a faulty tumble dryer I sent back last Wednesday.
After a week of hearing nothing I get put on hold 4 times ringing their South Africa call centre. All 4 times I was cut off.
On attempt number 5 I am told the replacement is now out of stock and they will refund my money.
I then received an email stating they will email when a replacement had left their warehouse - but I had just been promised a refund?
I ring again begging the call centre operative in the UK not to transfer me to South Africa, but he does anyway - thanks Jayden!!
I inform the operative that I would like a full refund and will be taking my custom elsewhere. They informed me it will take 3-5 working days to process.
So I can't yet order a new dryer as I don't have the funds to do so. We are a household of 7 with potty training infants and an asd bed wetter.
Sorry for the thread hijack OP Blush

Icimoi · 29/08/2014 20:38

It's not theft, because you will have authorised this when you accepted their terms and conditions. People really need to boycott their online shopping, otherwise they'll carry on with this practice.

Oh. My dad's been taking them home.

I had this problem with Asda and have never online shopped with them again, we also had our card cloned at pay at pump! I do still shop there occasionally but only in person in store.
they are also too thick to sub the 3 for £10 wines for other 3 for £10 wines
