Asda-To think this is stealing?

Shopped with Asda online for many years and i wake up this morning to find they have taken my payment twice.
I am absolutely livid beyond belief they are allowed to do this.
I know i will get the money back eventually, but they have taken my bank into the red aswell. I phoned the bank and they said Asdas have only just started doing this and i could be waiting up to a week to get my money back.
Aibu to think this is stealing and that i should have been pre-warned when ordering that their policy had changed?
Just feel robbed this morning and now my family's trip is ruinedSad

I don't know Holly but this the first time this has happened since being with them.

Check back to Asda's fb later - some large chains 'open' their page to comments during working hours, as obviously someone is then there to deal with questions/queries/complaints. Or they might keep it closed all the time, but it'd be worth checking back later.

BeauNidle · 28/05/2013 08:34

Asda are reknown for this. The amount of threads on here about it is untrue. I won't shop online with them

I didn't realise this happened so often. It is scary. I used to use Asda so I hope they didn't take any without me realising. Glad I use Tesco now.

fuzzpig · 28/05/2013 08:40

Or maybe not having read zzzz's post Shock

Wishiwasanheiress · 28/05/2013 08:41

Good grief was considering switching from Ocado to asda. Won't now!

Ocado don't do this.

TattyDevine · 28/05/2013 08:41

Absolute shower of barstards.

Gotta vote with your feet, avoid like the plague!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 28/05/2013 08:41

dh says could it be an interest scam?

cherrypopsicle · 28/05/2013 08:43

It sounds like it's in your outstanding transactions so will "drop off" your account after up to 10 working days. You can try asking your bank for a temporary reversal. If it was a genuine payment it would clear regardless, but for this type of payment it will release the funds back to your account within 2-3 hrs, depending on the bank systems

Katnisscupcake · 28/05/2013 08:54

I don't shop online very often as ASDA is just down the road, but when I have, this has never happened to me. In fact I've never even heard of it. They just take my money by debit card when I complete the order online and they deliver it at the requested time.

I think I'll stick to shopping in-store though if this is happening... Shock

ravenousbugblatterbeast · 28/05/2013 08:58

Have you access to Twitter? Try tweeting @AsdaServiceTeam and @asda - even though they haven't tweeted over the bank hol so presumably aren't around, at least it'll be a little more public and force them to reply..

pumpkinsweetie · 28/05/2013 08:59

Will try that Raven, thankyou Grin

This happens all the time with online shopping which is why I rarely do it anymore. I bought dh a cashmere jumper from Gap for Christmas. When I placed the order Gap took a 'holding' payment of £100, then 2 days later when they shipped the item they took the 'real' payment of £100, and then took 7 working days, so 9 days over a weekend to refund the 'holding' payment. I was furious, but the man I spoke to in the bank said that this was becoming common practice with online shopping.

Kafri · 28/05/2013 09:18

blimey. This has really made me think about online shopping!

ive never done food shopping online but was contemplating it recently - think I'll stick with trawling round the store. I really can't afford to pay twice and wait for one back.

helenthemadex · 28/05/2013 09:19

Asda did this to me with a big Christmas shop, I think they put on hold they amount they think your shopping will cost then when they make up your order for delivery take the amount it actually costs, so if there is a difference the amount held is still held, but they take the other amount, it took 10 days for it to go back to my account. Another time they didnt delivery anything because there wasnt enough in my account to cover the amount they had put on hold and the shopping.

I dont use them any more, I use Ocado, cheaper than Tescos and you get everything you order and I think there is £20 off your first order of £80 or over!!

pumpkinsweetie · 28/05/2013 09:38

It's put me off online shopping as a whole which is a pain, as neither of us drive so getting the shopping home with a family of 6 is a nightmare. Will get taxis in the future and shop elsewhere.
The gap thing is shockingShock, so even with regular non-grocery item you are not safe from this double payment thing. Going to be some changes around here as i cannot afford for this to happen again, so thanks to Asda, all the other stores will lose my custom to and i will lose out on savings-such a shame

rainbowslollipops · 28/05/2013 09:46

You're going to get this every place you order from. My partner started a subscription for a magazine, not only were they late delivering on numerous occasions but they also twice in 7 months took out double the amount. I had a similar thing with Nationwide banking! They sent my rent out twice! Goodbye over a thousand pounds in my bank half of which I didn't have. Hello overdraft. My first one ever. And I'm paying it off. Had no apologies from nationwide, no co-operations. So, I sent them a spotty letter, called them and said I'm leaving you, told them bluntly why and said I shan't be recommending them well, they'll be known to me as nationshite.

Use the above contacts, and send him(Andy Clarke) a link to this thread. He needs to read it.

It is totally unacceptable to help yourself to someone else money, there is no excuse, and to take away children's family day at the zoo, is nasty.

Andy Clarke you should resign you are not very good at your job, shameful, go away and think about what you have done, then fix it.

If Asda don't buy you a family zoo pass, give you at least twice what you have had taken in token and return your money.

I will pledge never to give them another penny, I suspect a lot of MN will not risk wanting to be put in the position the OP has.

quoteunquote (very large household)

Dyson were on the ball recently when they came up on MN, and contacted MN to offer support, so Asda Andy Clarke can you learn, and take a leaf out of Dyson's book?

fuzzypicklehead · 28/05/2013 12:06

Based on this thread, I've had a look at my last year's worth of bank statements. On 2 occasions I've had an unexpected overdraft that really threw me because I always check my balance before spending any money.

Guess what? Both occasions immediately followed an Asda shop where the money was taken twice and later put back. I spent ages beating myself up because I thought I had made a mistake somewhere, but it was them. But I got left paying the charges!

I guess they just lost another regular customer...

pumpkinsweetie · 28/05/2013 12:18

Thankyou for that email address qoute i have emailed him and i hope to receive a reply.

fuzzy I wonder how many times they have done this to others too!!! Because i don't have much money in my account it's always easy to tell who is the culprit, whereas some people have savings or extra money and may not notice they are being robbed.
It is disgusting it really is, very worrying that large companies are able to adopt this way of behaviour.

OP posts:
BriansBrain · 28/05/2013 12:42

I've really had my eyes opened by this thread and I regularly shop online with Asda. I didn't realise what a common error it is and there is no way I can risk it happening in our household budget.

mum23girlys · 28/05/2013 12:57

This has happened to me too. Asda are shit and they have absolutely no customer service skills. Every time I went to our local store they ballsed it up somehow. Last straw was at Christmas when a completely incompetent boy was working on the till and put my debit card through twice. I checked my online banking before Even left the store and could see that the money was held twice. The women at customer services were disgracefully condescending and treated me like it was no big deal being charged an extra 120 quid and couldn't see why I was making a fuss when they'd told me repeatedly that I would get the money back within 14 days. Eventually I had to really raise my voice and cause a bit of a scene and what do you know, the money was back in my account that Afternoon.

Vote with your money and spend it elsewhere. I've not bought a thing in Asda in 6 months and will never go back. I've moved my weekly shop to Aldi with a small stock up of brands in Sainsbos every few weeks. Not only can I do a shop in Aldis in half the time, I'm spending about 30% less too and the produce is better and staff excellent

quoteunquote · 28/05/2013 13:08

I've just been emailing various people,

One of our friends runs a support scheme which helps people in financial difficulties, as part of their help they devise shopping/meal planners, so people can get the best out of their limited budget (we often use ideas put up on MN)

I've given her a link to this thread, because I know that Asda gets used, the people in these situations, would not be able to survive this happening to them, so thanks for the warning.

One of the other people I have emailed a link to is the chap who runs the local food bank, he often buys on line from asda, to top up the donations, he gets given money by some, he would be stuffed too, if this happened to him, as we have more demand than food.

So massive thanks, I'm sorry you have had this happen to you, but by sharing it, you have made sure that now quite a few vulnerable people won't be risking it.

Can someone who tweets, put Andy Clarke, Asda shame and a link to this thread?
