Asda-To think this is stealing?

Shopped with Asda online for many years and i wake up this morning to find they have taken my payment twice.
I am absolutely livid beyond belief they are allowed to do this.
I know i will get the money back eventually, but they have taken my bank into the red aswell. I phoned the bank and they said Asdas have only just started doing this and i could be waiting up to a week to get my money back.
Aibu to think this is stealing and that i should have been pre-warned when ordering that their policy had changed?
Just feel robbed this morning and now my family's trip is ruinedSad

But why do they do it? What is the purpose of taking the second payment? Surely the first payment covered the good purchased, what does the second payment do?

icklemssunshine1 · 28/05/2013 14:10

val it does happen, you just probably haven't noticed. It wasn't until I actually had a delivery cancelled by Asda (who said my card was void) & I rang my bank to find out why my card was void, my bank said Asda had taken the money for delivery. I rang Asda & they said it was in their "holding" & would be returned to me in 7-10 days!! My brother works for Asda & shops at Morrisons. Says it all!

Sorry you've experienced this OP.

edam · 28/05/2013 14:12

blimey, this is appalling. Sorry for everyone it's happened to but thanks for the warning, I certainly will not be using Asda online.

How on earth it is legal to deduct money people do not owe and then to hang onto it until it suits Asda to give it back I do not know.

helenthemadex · 28/05/2013 14:18

I do wonder if you could write a letter saying that you are going to charge them interest on the money they have taken and unauthorised borrowing fees plus your expenses for going overdrawn.

Martin Lewis Money saving expert would be a good person to email/tweet about this

I assume it works in the same way as hotel bookings can do, in that they claim first dibs on £xxx when you check in, just in case you do a runner.

But ime when hotels do this, the actual payment is taken from the sum they've ringfenced and any difference credited or debited in real time, there and then, when you check out.

It's bad enough that ASDA debit your account before they've even packed the order - althoguh I can understand the thinking behind it. I assume it's to prevent putting manhours into packing an order and having a delivery slot taken only to have the payment declined.

But taking days to release the "ghost" payment is absurd, especially in this age of faster payments, where one can transfer money from one account to another instantaneously.

The only logical conclusion is that they don't care.

Still fed up, still no answers, still no cash. I can understand hotels, as you could in theory do a runner, but Asda, where do you think i'm going to run off to with a house full of kids and your manky shopping?

artex the first one you linked to was me :) I still won't shop there.
Can't believe they are still getting away with this, I wonder how much interest they've earned from this over the years?

pumpkinsweetie · 28/05/2013 15:32

Wish i had seen your thread Terra and shopped elsewhere, as i would be a lot happier today.

I've used tesco since then, some things maybe a little more expensive but the points doubled up for toy vouchers make it worthwhile. :)

pumpkinsweetie · 28/05/2013 15:38

I also use Tesco, they are much better, similar priced and the clubcard points are so helpful and can be doubled up for days out, toys, clothes etc.

I am really struggling to understand the logic of this.

Why do they need 2 payments and return 1 later??

What are they doing with all this money whilst they have it?? Are they getting interest on it - because if they are I would want it?? After all its MY money?

Why is this not theft??

None of this has any logic nor makes any sense.

All I know is I keep hearing horrendous things about Asda online shopping and have vowed to never ever order from them. Infact their unfriendly customer service I keep hearing about is putting me off ever shopping there again.

pumpkinsweetie · 28/05/2013 15:42

I don't understand it call imho opinion it is stealing and amounts to nothing more. Like i said what do they think i'm going to do, go off to the other side of the world with my shopping and refuse to pay them for all of £99!

Why, that's what i would like to know too???
Funny how phone personel don't seem to know why, maybe they are clueless too
