AIBU?

To ask you on average when do "babies" STTN

SunMoonStarship · 04/05/2013 21:47

DC1 slept through from 5 months. DC2 (11 months) wakes multiple times. I recently read somewhere that only 50% of 9 month old babies sleep through the night (STTN).

I'm exhausted and desperate for sleep. Luckily DH and I have family to help out and take the kids so we get a break.

But I was wondering what the average age was for babies STTN. I've heard it's 6 months but the stats above disagree with this.

I know all babies are different (look at my two DCs!) but basically, if I knew it was likely DC2 would STTN by 12 months or 18 months or something, then I would be able to see through this sleep deprived fog.

So AIBU to ask you when you're DCs STTN?

Thanks

DC1 did it all-by-herself at 12mo until 18mo. We then had another year of night-wakings until we sleep-trained at 2.5yo. Now aged almost 5yo, she wakes about 4/7 nights.

DC2 is 20mo and his best night ever was recently, sleeping 9pm to 5am.

We tried CC with DC1 but it never sat well with me and DH hates them crying. We haven't done CC with DC2, just lots of PUPD.

DC2 could climb out of his cot, so sleeps in a bed already, which of course doesn't help!

My friends who have had most success with babies sleeping are definitely the strict ones and/or the ones who don't want their lives to change with the advent of babies (sorry of that sounds judgemental, it is a bit). My DH doesn't get home very early from work, so I don't really feel like I lose my evenings by spending them trying to get the DCs to sleep. And I probably cope better than most with less sleep.

Reading with interest, but would also like to know those who slept through under the age of one, whether they were bf, ff or mixed fed. Do bf babies sleep through ever?

About 11 months with DS, but he will sttn 3-4 times a week, other nights he wakes once for milk then nods straight back off again. He's now 17mo and we co-sleep. Often it'll depend how much we've worn him out- two trips to the park vs one trip+garden, soft play vs grandad's house, bath vs no bath (it freaks him out and knackers him).

He had a looooong day yesterday, slept 10.30pm-7am, 7am-8.30am and then a monstrous 4 HOURS this afternoon: 12-4. He's just gone to bed (10.30). He's done an average one four-hour sleep per week for the last month, I'm guessing he's going through a growth spurt.

Dd1, 14 months, dd2, 10 or 11 months. Both because of Ferber.

Ds1- three months
Ds2- two years
Ds3- almost ten months and still feeding at least twice in the night plus other wakings . This is nearly killing me at the moment as I have a stressful job and feel permanently exhausted.

Still waiting at 20 months. If she's not poorly or teething (5% of time) she sometimes sleeps 9-6.

Mine still wakes up in the night about half the time and she's 27 months old.

Forgot to say, ds1 slept through at about 2 years old once he stopped bfing. He is a good sleeper now, only wakes up for a drink of water occasionally, and sleeps much better at night of he hasn't had a daytime nap (he's now 2y10months). He also went through a period at four months old of sleeping through, til another growth spurt kicked in.

Ds2 is 20 days old.

Both mine bf and both awful sleepers! Both definitely slept better after stopping bf and even better after night weaning altogether and stopping bedtime bottles too.

In spite of that I still advocate bf!

Cheese I dared to suggest that my first 2 slept because they were ff and it didn't go down too well here. Number 3 was and is breast fed. I have it on good aibu authority that they are all different and it does not matter if they are ff or bf Wink

I also big time advocate breast feeding I did not mind night feeding number 3 at all

DC1, FF (mixed fed until 9 weeks), started sleeping through most nights from 8 weeks and consistently from 11 weeks. He's now 5.5 and I could count on my fingers the amount of night wakings he's had since then.

DC2, BF, slept through from 18 weeks, exactly 3 days after we worked out she had a milk protein allergy and I stopped having any dairy in my diet. So she'd probably have been earlier.

It's just the way babies are made in my family. Out of my siblings and their DC, mine have been the slowest to sleep through.

It's just the luck of the draw and fuck me, I got bloody lucky.

DS (breastfed) is 2 and a half and has only recently started sleeping from 9 to 7 though not every night.

And I've never had a night off. Never. Sob.

Still waiting at 6 months for more than a 3 hour stretch. ... exhaustion doesn't even begin to cover it

Report
Springforward · 04/05/2013 22:27

DS 26 weeks, as long as you count 5am as sleeping through. 4 years later he's still an early riser but at least we get to 6am most days now. (Still woke at night after that if he was ill though, or less often with a bad dream as he grew up a bit though.)

Report
cocoplops · 04/05/2013 22:27

DS1 - 18 months (and that was only cos we sleep trained)
DS2 - 9 weeks....never knew such dream babies existed. Did it on his own, with no parental intervention
