AIBU?

To ask you on average when do "babies" STTN

DC1 slept through from 5 months. DC2 (11 months) wakes multiple times. I recently read somewhere that only 50% of 9 month old babies sleep through the night (STTN).

I'm exhausted and desperate for sleep. Luckily DH and I have family to help out and take the kids so we get a break.

But I was wondering what the average age was for babies STTN. I've heard it's 6 months but the stats above disagree with this.

I know all babies are different (look at my two DCs!) but basically, if I knew it was likely DC2 would STTN by 12 months or 18 months or something, then I would be able to see through this sleep deprived fog.

So AIBU to ask you when you're DCs STTN?

Thanks

dd slept through (9 hours) from birth.

Then at 6 months she stopped and woke many times a night until she was around 18 months.

HTH!

dd1 slept through from 2 weeks old, she didn't actually go to sleep until about 11 pm but she slept until morning. Even now it's a job to get her to go to bed before 9!

Dd2 was totally different she would go to sleep early but wake up a lot and didn't sleep through until she was 6 months. Now she is a fabulous sleeper and we don't hear a peep out of her all night, this morning she didn't wake up until gone 9 Grin

Ds1 slept through at three years...but we had had ds2 by then...

Ds2 slept through by 20mthsish?

Ds3 was similar to ds2.

Ds4 was the amazing sleeping baby and slept through from 4mths wish, tho he had a dream feed for a bit longer I think.

Dd mum from about a year has been pretty good, before that she generally just needed her dummy or to be reswaddled when she woke.

Ds1 7 week. Ds2 4.5 years!! By the time ds2 STTN I was so sleep deprived and emotionally messed up that I posted on Facebook that I would run away if only I had the energy. Ds2 is now 5, sleeps fine and those 4.5 years seem a world away!

Haven't read the thread, but:

DD 15 months - still not consistently sleeping through the night, but usually going through until 4-5am, which is a major improvement. Still doesn't nap much, never has. She was still waking about 4-6 times a night at 11 months and 2-3 times at 13 months. Sad

DS was a pretty good sleeper from birth, I got 2 four hour stretches, a bit of cluster feeding from 5-7 and then another 2 hours. He slept 6.30-6.30 at 10 weeks (bf). Then 4m hit and it all went to pot! Switched to formula around 6m but it made no difference (that wasn't why we switched).

We've had good and bad patches (9m was pretty horrendous) but he just started sleeping through reliably at 26 months.

This is a good thread for those people who have one or two who sleep thru really early, and feel ever so smug that it was their good sense and amazing routine that did it.
I firmly believe that, yes, there are things you can try (cc for example after 8 or 9 months) which will help, but some babies are built to sleep well, and some just are not.
I have a friend who, with her first, went on and on about why her dd slept thru at 6 weeks (routine, dark room, bath etc) and then had her second... Bwahahahah

My dd has only just started sleeping through at 20 months. She now does 7-5, quick drink of milk and then back down until 6, 6.30. Sometimes she will then get in with us and sleep until 7.30!

Not yet - DS is three years and 2 months old and has seamlessly transitioned from waking up for a feed (until he was 2) or a drink to waking up because he's wet his nappy/pull-up. He was 2 before he stopped waking every 2-3 hours, then a month or so before his 3rd birthday he started to only wake up once a night (about 4am). He also only needs about 9 hours' sleep in every 24; if he has an afternoon nap then he will still be awake at 11pm and happily up at 6:30!
(Full-time teacher here; I'm accustomed to getting in from work at 6pm and doing a couple of hours' marking from 11pm-1am or so.)

That is of course not "sleeping through the night".

By 6 hours I mean maybe 9pm to 3am. This is only sometimes.

How on earth is that classed as sleeping through the night??

TheYamiOfYawn · 06/05/2013 20:28

DD 2 and a half. DS three and a quarter.

Report
RooneyMara · 06/05/2013 20:26

No idea whatsoever, but I co slept and fed on demand for all of them for ages so it wasn't much of an issue.

Ds3 is 4 months, he sometimes goes for about 6 hours overnight but after that it's all over the place.

But he's next to me so it's not too bad really.
Just as well because no one is around very much to help!

DD at 4 months and DS at 5 months, both after CC (following the advice of their paed).

Both mine exactly the same . 10-7 at 7 weeks 7-7 at 12 weeks . Both very very different babies. What does your dc do when they wake up? Do you feed or just re settle? I trained mine from day one and took no chances with dc2 even though he was prem and had reflux he did exactly the same as dd.

Meant to add that DD went through a phase at around 2 for a whole fecking year of waking in the night due to night terrors. Most nights she went back to sleep straight away in my bed with me but other times she wanted a drink and a chat (at 3am- ALWAYS 3am!) Hmm

Report
DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 06/05/2013 20:10

DD was 5 weeks, DS more like 18 months and it took a lot of controlled crying. Was worth it though as he is much happier now hes getting more sleep! As are the rest of us! Grin

I was told that recently about the 5 hour thing, I had never heard it before. I would have considered 5 hours as '5 hours between feeds' when they were little, not sttn because we weren't getting a full nights sleep because they woke up mid way through the night.

Every baby is different and everyone has their own gauge of what sttn is so maybe the original question would have been better worded as 'When did your baby sleep through XX hours?'

Report
TwinkleTits · 06/05/2013 19:50

DS1 - 6 years old. Years -

Ds2 - 2 years old and nowhere near.

Report
pointythings · 06/05/2013 19:23

DD1 - 10 weeks.

DD1 - 11 months.

And you do realise that in a young baby, 5 hours or longer is classed as STTN?
