Oh poor you kaylasmum. It's not going to happen, honestly. I heard a programme about it in the summer on radio 4 with people who said that the idea the world will actually end on that date is based on a misunderstanding.

kayla, as someone who has had anxiety before you need to figure out what you think worrying will achieve. i used to think that it meant I wouldn't make little mistakes. And to a degree that is true. Worrying about holidays etc means I have always had trips that ran quite smoothly.

However, what is the point in worrying about the world ending as there is nothing you can do. You can't actually prepare for every eventuality and this is one of them.

Put it this way. If it happens, bugger all we can do about it. So why waste time worrying about it.

I doubt it will. Wouldn't bother me if it did, though.

I'm a huge worrier, but I'm not worried at all about the December 21st thing.

What I do worry about is a solar flare knocking out all the power worldwide and nobody being able to do anything about it. I panic about the anarcy that would ensue in the hours following. I've been having panic attacks about that recently and was seriously wishing we had some kind of nuclear bunker to run to when it happens.

Or the world running out of fuel...anarcy...lawless society...everyone for themselves.

And the Yellowstone thing. That really worries me.

But the Mayan 2012 prediction? Nah. I'm not convinced.

Thanks for the link to No More Panic...I think I'll debunk there for a while!

Listen, no-one can predict the end of the world, it's just NONSENSE. It makes no logical sense whatsoever.

It will not happen on 21st December.

The end of the world has been predicted (wrongly, obviously) so many times before.

Forget about it, it's just RUBBISH.

Oh and OP, how about this for a promise. The world will definitely not end on 21st but if it does I will pay you £10,000.

Get yourself a go-bag ready to put your mind at ease. This website is great. 72hours.org/go_bag.html
I too have anxiety about these things, not really the world ending, but zombies floods etc, like in the same way that if i hear a noise in the house, it's definitely the girl from the ring, even though i don't believe in ghosts.
But really, it's superstitious twaddle, you have nothing to be afraid of.

My mate's an astronomer and reckons the solar flare won't occur until mid to late April. I'd say just enjoy Christmas and don't fret about your waistlines. She warned me not to max out my credit card so she's not worried!! Smile

KaylasMum, where are you getting all this stuff?

I read broadsheet newspapers with highly educated science editors, and none of them are talking about this. They talk about climate change, but not this. Why would that be?

The governments of the developed world have highly paid top scientists advising on all sorts of things - all over the world, huge building projects are going on, hospitals are pouring resources into curing people of diseases, why would they be doing all that if the world was going to end?

Your bank - if the world was going to end, they would lend you millions and not worry about getting it back if ther was no future. test that in your bank tomorrow Grin

The top international physicists - some of the brainiest folk in the world - at CERN in Switzerland have come close to discovering what could be the beginning of the world, and seem to have no discoveries at all concerning the end of the world on Dec 21st!

Obviously the real issue is your anxiety, and that you have focussed it on this. But you must be seeking out this stuff, because as I say i have come across none of it. Stop looking for myths perpetrated by nutters who love messing with people's heads.

Lots of things to worry about that you can actually solve - in my case it would be a pile of laundry, what on earth is happening with the electric on my car, and after-school childcare next Thursday. You too must have a list like that - worry about it, do something about it, feel better!

"at CERN in Switzerland have come close to discovering what could be the beginning of the world"

What are the discoveries?

FBWorry - Please, please don't take this as accurate, I am a mere arts graduate Grin. But as I understand it particle physicists have been exploring what happened in the nano-seconds of time after the Big Bang, and umm, particles, possibly called the Higgs Boson, separated out - because some ions go right and some go left - into matter and anti-matter. This could explain the origins of the universe.

They have been studyng the behaviour of particles when they collide into each other by sending them at unimaginable speeds round a tube - the Large Hadron Collider - which is a particle accelerator. They use huge magnnetic forces to speed the particles up round 27 miles of undergorund tunnels, and cause particles to crash into each other so that they can observe what happens.

It is the same research centre that sent particles in underground tunnels to italy and thought they had discovered a particle, a neutrino, that could travel faster than the speed of light. However subsequent tests have shown the results to be the result of equipment malfunction.

Cool. DH said something about a dog being helped to walk again after been paralysed but I might have not been listening that well at the time :)

I suspect that CERN can explain things more clearly and accurately than me. It's fascinating stuff. Not sure they have started on dog miracles yet, though.

OK. Assume for a minute that the world will end on the 21st. What are you going to do about it? Scream for the next 2 weeks? I would suggest just getting on with your life as if nothing will happen, which it probably won't.

I've posted my story on a couple of threads before but I understand 100% where you're coming from.

All the 2012 shite is perpetrated by a bunch of scaremongering arseholes to make money. They took a misunderstanding, saw how profitable it could be and just ran with it.

Try not to google, do your best to stay calm and look forward to Christmas, it'll still roll round this year Smile.
