anya- what difference do the leap years make, its the date that was predicted, the 21st of december is the 21st of december regardless of leap years.

We've had a lot of end of the world warnings before. I always love it when the day comes and it's all a bit meh and a totally normal day. There are people who are very attracted to this sort of thing and will blow it up into a massive drama, and of course newspapers love it because it's compelling to read about. The actual evidence behind any of these things always turns out to be completely unworrying and massively misinterpreted so we can all scare ourselves silly.

Think how many things are currently being planned for after Dec 21st. Millions. People aren't cancelling their Christmas presents or New Year's dos or their weddings next year. Because underneath all the woo and scaring each other, we actually think life will go on as it always does.

Well no Mayans predicted that the end of the world would involve suffering (in fact they haven't predicted the end of the world they just didn't both writing a longer calendar) so why would it involve suffering?

I have had anxiety and I think you need to look long and hard at what you realistically can control. And also be cynical about the reasons why people might suggest you can control it ie by buying survival stuff etc.

Plus I don't see why the world ending would mean pain, surely everything would just cease to exist?

It can't, anyway, not if Kate and Wills are having a baby. They wouldn't have allowed it.

I think I'm imagining it'll be quick because they keep saying the world will end ON the 21st...which kind of implies, that'll be it - so if it's going to drag out, it'd better start sharpish because it has only got two weeks in which to be unpleasant.

When I was a child in Sydney, a prophet predicted that Christ would walk on the water though the Heads, and end the world. He - the prophet - sold seats in a concrete stadium he built by the harbourside...then a few years later Adelaide was meant to be destroyed by a tsunami. The mayor had to spend the day on the beach to calm the panic. I don't suppose he minded. :)

People thought the world would end in 1000, and 2000, and 1666 (the year of the number of the Beast). None of it happened, duh.

I think you might be worrying about something else, really, or generally feeling anxious.

I got terrified when I was growing up at the thought of a nuclear war. There was some scarey stuff around about it. Like somebody was this close to pressing the red button so we were all a minute away from oblivion. But we're still here so far!

Its nto like revelations which implies the end of the world will last for millenia.

This is a nice, calm, nilistic end of the world theory.

I think that its because i've read of polar shifts and the planets aligning, which would make the world change direction causing earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes to erupt, that would not be a quick death, it would be prolonged and terrifying.

I have a lot of stress in my life at the moment which could be a contributing factor to how irrational i am at the moment.

Mayans never predicted the end of the world. And they aren't having a right old laugh - their religious customs and history have been mangled by White academics making profit of their backs. The Mayans of Guatemala are having to sue their own government to stop them putting this bullshit out to advise rich Westerns to take over their holy sites on one of their biggest occasions.

polar shifts shouldn't cause a problem. Why on earth would the planets aligning cause them to change direction? My understanding is that The momentum that thows the earth around the sun ( so to speak) is far stonger than the impact of some smallish planets hundreds of thousands of miles away.

There are NO planetary alignments in December 2012. NONE. Just the usual winter solstice which happens every single December 21st.

There was one "major alignment" in 1962, and two in 1982 and 2000.

I also read something about a rogue planet heading towards earth, is this all hearsay? i'm not usually this gullible honestly!

I get anxiety too and this was one of my worries until I thought about it.

Think about- the "world" doesnt know how old it is or what date us humans have assigned to it. It wont " oh this is the date Im supposed to end!"

Humans have messed about with the calender a fair few times anyway, so really what is the date? We used to have the Gregorian calendar until Julius caesar changed it so in reality the date is not "natural".

For cultures that don't use Jesus as a starting point for time it is a different year. I believe the Jewish calendar is about year 5700 ish already! The Chinese calendar is also ahead.

How about different time zones? Does it mean countries ahead of us in time will end first?

Basically nobody can say a date the world is destined to end as there is no real definite date so don't worry :)

Personally, I would not mind being hit by a massive big rock, or flung out to space.

A bit sad for the kids though, especially so close to Christmas.

@kaylasmum there is a rogue planet that may impact the earth in 50+ years if its path is influenced in a certain way in the next few years. The chances are miniascule though.
