.....to think that the casual racism shown towards Ferengi in ST:TNG is rather unpleasant?

I mean, the Ferengi have been carefully designed to be irritating but come on!

Picard saying "I have reluctantly let members of a particular ethnic group on baord the Enterprise - hopefully they won't cause trouble" just sounds wrong to me and is not in keeping with the happy-clappy 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge' ethos of the whole show. Unless the ethos is actually 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge them unless we find them personally repulsive, in which case we hoick our judgy pants right up'.

I may be over-thinking this but I still don't find it nice to watch, which is upsetting as I'm an avid TNG fan :(

I don't have Pick +1. This episode is good though - I believe Tasha Yar's sister is in this one.

There's a character that looks like a young Greg Sumner on the planet.

degutastic · 18/10/2012 20:42

Silly little Wes, made his mummy disappear.

I am always amused that he stands there in his uniform, at work, surrounded by colleagues and calls her mom Grin

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 20:57

Snog: Chakotay (as I think he'd be a bit dull in the long term) or young McCoy (he makes a very grumpy old man!)

Marry: Spock. (A repressed man is far better over the long term!)

Avoid: Kirk.

Anyone else deeply amused by how when Crusher jumps back into "reality" and Wes collapses and everyone ignores him? Picard side steps him to give Beverly a hug, and even she addresses the alien chap ignoring Wesley who is still -pathetically- hanging off the console. He must be the most hated character in the history of Star Trek!

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 21:09

There must have been some stuff going on on TNG.

TNG is almost post-sexual, apart from when they're having weird dreams/ confronting alien miasmas. Picard is too conscious of his dignity to get dirty. Dr Crusher doesn't really fancy him (how could she?). Worf and Data find humans too limited.

Well, Worf did get it on with Alexander's mother, didn't he Wink and Picard had a girlfriend in one episode (scientist girl) and they made lovely music together Grin tasha hits on Data in one of the first episodes, even Wes has a gf at one point. And O Brien's married to Keiko, isn't he. I also definitely remember Guinan talking Geordi through his relationship woes on many occasions - doesn't he get off with a hologram engineer at one point????

haha that's more Reg Barclay's field, isn't it, Kim? Grin

auntpetunia · 18/10/2012 21:51

snog chakotay, marry Paris, avoid Barclay

ScarePhyllis · 18/10/2012 22:06

pluto Totally agree that TNG is post-sexual. It was almost like they did The Naked Now as the first episode after the opener in order to establish that, yes, the sexing happens in this universe! Now let us never speak of it again!

I say this as someone who just a few days ago watched The Naked Now with a friend who is a big Trek fan but missed quite a lot of the first season of TNG and hadn't seen it before. There is literally no better entertainment than watching someone seeing TNN for the first time, curled up in a ball and crying "No!" at intervals.

To be fair to Wesley, he is one of the few characters in TNG who gets some real character development over the course of the series, and I do enjoy his arc. The First Duty is one of my favourite episodes.

OK, if we're doing captains:
Snog Q (he gives himself the rank of captain ... )
Marry Picard
Avoid Archer

chillikat · 18/10/2012 22:20

I'm now thinking DH and I need to dust off the TNG box set. It's been a few years. We've caught the occasional episode on Pick.

Wesley is incredibly annoying, but yes, in later series does improve slightly.

The episode when Picard gets his flute has me in bits every time.

HalloweenyHerrena · 19/10/2012 16:35

I think that when they do do 'the sex' in TNG it is ridiculously awkward. There was an ep recently on Pick where Deanna got it on with a quarter-empath guy and they seemed so self-conscious!!

I feel bad for Geordi - he'd be a total sweetie as a boyfriend I think (if maybe slightly sulky, but I could hypnotise train him out of that Grin).

Snog: Riker. He is indeed a fittie, if too flirty for the long-term (and I'd live in fear of him deciding to lose the beard).
Marry: Chakotay. He'd be good for me the serene bastard
Avoid: Reg Barclay. Like. The. PLAGUE.

Halloweeny - I'd be self conscious if I was an empath and the guy was too. Can you imagine that [ blush ]

There are thoughts that should always be private such as "oh for gods sake I told you not to do THAT"

In terms of series surely it's TNG,TOS and then Voyager? DS9 was terrible. Didn't watch Enterprise ever because it looked like terrible might be a kind description.

Who was Alexander's mother btw? I was a kid when TNG was on and don't remember seeing her ever?

Scaredbutdoingit · 19/10/2012 17:53

Alexander's mother (half human, half klingon) -K?Ehleyr

GoldenPeppermintCreams · 19/10/2012 17:55

I loved watching Star Trek as a teenager/young adult. I first got into Sci-Fi watching Babylon 5 on Channel 4 (love love love) and started getting into other 90's sci fi. Caught the last couple of seasons of TNG which was ok, then DS9 started which I loved as well.

This list has changed since I was a teenager...

Snog: Q
Marry: Paris
Avoid: Odo

Best Friend: Dax

plutocrap · 19/10/2012 17:56

Gosh, her look is very... er... Seventies.

Weird to see un-plumped lips, innit?! Grin

Oh shit. If I'd known that ALL of them were going to be there!!! Shock

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 21/10/2012 13:36

I hear that they had a fight in the car park afterwards to see who was the best captain. Sisko kicked them all in the balls and won. He genetically engineered balls for Janeway first so he could take her down the same way.

plutocrap · 21/10/2012 15:26

HAHAHA, those balls were EXTRAS for Janeway!

FolkGhoul · 21/10/2012 19:51

Kim I didn't go Sad

And I could have indulged at least one third of my Star Trek Captain Snog Marry Avoid fantasy!

jaggythistle · 21/10/2012 20:04

they are just a tiny bit devious and a touch ruthless though, who wouldn't kind of dislike them. :)

did ya see the DS9 where Rom is gutted that Quark is still alive cos he still won't get the bar?

DH has been re watching his ST:TNG and DS9 box sets and we did laugh at some episodes where they were maybe running out of ideas for appendages to differentiate a new species. Grin

not every species was humanoid though, there were a few energy beings and suchlike were there not?

they maybe tried a wee bit harder with Species 8472 - was that just Voyager they appeared on?

Xnedra · 21/10/2012 20:15

Worf and Deanna got it on in TNG. And a favourite episode will always be the one where Worf helps Keiko give birth. "You are now 10 centimetres you may now give birth"

I had a massive crush on Ensign Harry Kim from Voyager.
