.....to think that the casual racism shown towards Ferengi in ST:TNG is rather unpleasant?

I mean, the Ferengi have been carefully designed to be irritating but come on!

Picard saying "I have reluctantly let members of a particular ethnic group on baord the Enterprise - hopefully they won't cause trouble" just sounds wrong to me and is not in keeping with the happy-clappy 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge' ethos of the whole show. Unless the ethos is actually 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge them unless we find them personally repulsive, in which case we hoick our judgy pants right up'.

I may be over-thinking this but I still don't find it nice to watch, which is upsetting as I'm an avid TNG fan :(

Years ago I had a Jewish boyfriend who ...let's just say, had sensitive ears...

So when I first saw ferengis years later, I wasn't sure if it was anti semetic or a big in-joke.

Thought it was just me!

QueenStromba · 15/10/2012 23:39

TNG is definitely the best series and the Ferengi are definitely vile creatures worthy of repulsion. I did rather enjoy the most recent film though and am looking forward to the sequel.

showtunesgirl · 15/10/2012 23:44

I don't get it. I've got a Star Trek Encyclopaedia, mint condition, signed by Terry Farrell and I couldn't flog it on ebay and yet here you all are! Confused

LaVitaBellissima · 15/10/2012 23:49

I love Star Trek Grin I used to watch it with my dad

Who liked Janeway? (spelling?)

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/10/2012 23:51

I always saw the Ferengi as extreme right-wing Americans - absolute ultra-capitalists, Gordon Gekko "greed is good" types - Wall Street was released in 1987, the same year ST:NG started (do I get into the ST Geek Club? Please?).

And I fully agree with Scaredbutdoingit's commetns on Ferengi individualism - Quark, Rom and Nog were all very different people.

NetworkGuy · 16/10/2012 00:00

Some are certainly far stronger followers than others.

I'm stuck on what 'TOS' stands for!

Mind you, I probably watched the lot when they were first on (!)

WhereYouLeftIt · 16/10/2012 00:02

TOS = The Original Series

HalloweenyHerrena · 16/10/2012 13:45

I agree that the Ferengi are shown to be individuals in ST:DS9, but I think that may be because the writers realised they couldn't go on dismissing a whole race! In fact I feel that portrayal of individuals from lots of species was more thoughtful on ST:DS9 in general (look at the Cardassian Kira half-likes, f'r'instance).

I do like how Wil Wheaton is an ubergeek now - I found a blog of his where he reviewed all the episodes of ST:TNG series 1 and it was hilarious!

GrrArghZzz - I've never noticed a particular Jewish presence in Buffyworld, apart from Willow obv. Mind you I've only watched Buffy, not Angel. Any examples? Curious now!

And TNG kicks TOS's ARSE.

In Firefly, there is a postman (who wears a kippah) who is a large guy and coward, and Mr. Universe who marries his sex-doll looking robot (during the ceremony he stomps on a glass, a traditional Jewish wedding practice). No need for these identifiers it seems, their religion never seems relevant in any way other than it makes them even more other than they already were.

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceJews gives more details.

TerrariaMum · 16/10/2012 19:50

Halloweeny, can I bang the gavel again for you? The TNG theme soothed DD as a newborn not to mention TNG has Patrick Stewart who is not only a wonderful actor but has also campaigned against DV.

I didn't watch TNG until I was pregnant with DD (hence theme soothing) but fourteen year old me would have been totally in love with Wesley Crusher. I agree that it is awesome that Wil Wheaton is an ubergeek now. And I'm always glad to see geeks on mn so thanks for starting this thread.

auntpetunia · 16/10/2012 20:36

I think the Ferengi are sexist..... Rule of Acquisition number 4 is "A woman wearing clothes is like a man in the kitchen" .

And I agree with Todaysagoodday Voyager is the best... I give you Robert Beltran, Robert Dunc McNeil and the fabulous Robert Picardo and for the men Jeri Ryan!!!

showtunesgirl · 16/10/2012 20:42

Jeri Ryan is enough to turn any straight woman too. Wink

When TNG came on, I used to turn off the lights in the living room. It was an awesome light show. >happy sigh

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 16/10/2012 21:02

The ferengi were meant to be a replacement for the Klingons as the main baddies in TNG, but they scrapped the idea when test audiences found the idea of a 5 foot tall species being a huge threat to the federation amusing...

showtunesgirl · 16/10/2012 21:04

I am 5 foot tall and have been told that I am VERY scary. Grin

But yes, the Ferengi are a bit well silly to be the main villains.

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 16/10/2012 21:09

Ah, if only the ferengi warriors were female! They might have been taken more seriously Grin

Flosshilde · 16/10/2012 21:18

TNG is far superior to TOS.

However, in the shaggability stakes, Jean Luc far outstrips Riker. I never understood why he always got the girls.

Callmecordelia · 16/10/2012 21:18

A TNG thread!

I think the Ferengi were meant to be a much bigger part of TNG than they actually we

Callmecordelia · 16/10/2012 21:23

Damn phone, sorry. What ScaryBeardyDaddyMan said, anyway.

Must read threads more carefully before posting, or attempting to post.

Yama · 16/10/2012 21:50

You know the opening credits to TNG when the enterprise would fly, or is it zoom, off past the edge of the telly? Well, my Dad would jump up and catch it. You can't buy memories like that.

Yama · 16/10/2012 21:52

Flosshilde - in my early teens I though Dr Crusher was much much prettier than Troy and I couldn't understand why she had to date the old duffer Picard.

Yes, the young me liked Wesley. Off to read his blog.

QueenStromba · 16/10/2012 21:53

I agree, Patrick Stewart is way sexier than Jonathen Frakes. I worked in Madame Tussauds for a while about ten years ago and sometimes worked on the film stand next to the Patrick Stewart - even as a wax work he oozes sex appeal.

RikersBeard · 17/10/2012 08:26

(again)

Frakes is a hottie, the combination of serious senior officer with boyish twinkle is delicious. That's why the laydeez love him.

showtunesgirl · 17/10/2012 11:38

Am I the only one who thought that Data was kind of hot too? Or is that a step too far? Blush

catgirl1976 · 17/10/2012 11:47

I fancy Worf Blush
