.....to think that the casual racism shown towards Ferengi in ST:TNG is rather unpleasant?

I mean, the Ferengi have been carefully designed to be irritating but come on!

Picard saying "I have reluctantly let members of a particular ethnic group on baord the Enterprise - hopefully they won't cause trouble" just sounds wrong to me and is not in keeping with the happy-clappy 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge' ethos of the whole show. Unless the ethos is actually 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge them unless we find them personally repulsive, in which case we hoick our judgy pants right up'.

I may be over-thinking this but I still don't find it nice to watch, which is upsetting as I'm an avid TNG fan :(

I'm surprised noone's mentioned Harry as anything other than a crew member! I always had a soft spot for Harry... Wink
but would've ditched him in a heart beat if Chakotay or Riker looked my way!

I never can decide between Voyager & Next Gen, they're both fab! TOS would definitely be next on my list followed by DS9... Enterprise wouldn't even feature I'm afraid!

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/10/2012 15:42

Enterprise was very disappointing. For me it's a toss-up between Voyager and DS9 for favourite. Probably DS9, then Voyager, TOS and TNG. TOS beats TNG purely because it has aged better, the hairstyles especially in TNG make me positively wince sometimes. And TOS was groundbreaking for its day, TNG wasn't.

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/10/2012 15:43

Star Trek orchestra - didn't Spock play a Vulcan instrument? I think I remember him playing it and Uhura singing along.

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 15:48

Nope it's TNG, Voyager, TOS, DS9
Enterprise doesn't even feature due to being utter shite.

Soembody played some weird electronic woowoo thing, but I can't remember what it was or who. Was it Spock? am sadly lacking ANY boxed sets so I can't find out.

It's not just the big hair which dates TNG, it's the decor. The bridge looks like it was furnished by MFI.

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 15:48

X post!

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 18/10/2012 15:57

Sisko was an awesome captain. He wasn't just a captain, he was a father and had a backstory. And he wasn't just a womanizer!

Also he didn't always follow the rules and take the moral high ground. He got stuff done.

Scaredbutdoingit · 18/10/2012 16:03

I think Spock's instrument was a lyre?

My favourites in order are: TOS, TNG, DS9 (could never get into Voyager and hated Enterprise).

I'm a huge fan of the Kirk/Spock bromance thing they had going on. Wink

I loved TNG because I could imagine it being the actual future (in my younger days), and dreamed of living in that lovely, clean, futuristic environment with people like the Star Trek crew (who I greatly admired).

And I liked DS9 mainly for the Odo/Quark interactions, love the Cardassians, and absolutely can't stand the Bajorans (hated every episode with them in!)

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 16:07

I'm not sure whether I ever saw that episode, ScaryBeardyDeadyMan. Was it with his (Picard's) brother? I seem to remember something about their drinking in the other Picard's vineyard - "real wine, not synthehol".

That character developement out of genetic modification is the best sort of science fiction: real (human and dramatic) consequences from the technology - bravo!

I'd love to be a Star Trek writer....

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 16:14

I agree, Enterprise was pants. Such a shame, as it was quite promising, with the lovely Scott Bakula (only they removed his balls), and some promising premises : (a) an antidote to the everything-working-properly world of TNG and (b) conflict between the humans and Vulcans which I thought was an allegory for America trying to assert itself in the world universe in defiance of those decadent, smart-alec, impotent Europeans Vulcans. They don't seem to have had enough sense of humour or humility to have allowed that to be a real ethical dilemma, so they ended up jes' being big ol' space cowboys and "loosening up" T'Pol: no wonder she looked so pissed off all the time! And the Vulcans were scarcely advertisements for "civilisation".

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 18/10/2012 16:22

Hmm... I'd forgotten about T'Pol... Can I add her to my crew? She can be recreation officer

showtunesgirl · 18/10/2012 16:27

Sisko got much better after the beard. It's all about the beard.

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 16:46

Stop oppressing T'Pol! She needs assertiveness training from Seven of Nine!

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 17:14

I loved Sisko. He was great. And my favourite Captain. But I have to be honest and say Picard first.

I'd forgotten all about Enterprise, which says it all really.

If I were to play Star Trek Captain Snog, Marry, Avoid.

I would say

Snog: Picard
Marry: Sisko
Avoid: Archer

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 17:15

Sisko may have a back-story, but he doesnt have the sheer interplanetary-sized gravitas of Picard.

Yes, yes, spock's lyre! I am now thinking there is also a Klingon instrument that Worf plays too.

riskit4abiskit · 18/10/2012 19:33

Snog Picard
Marry Archer (quantum leap memories) avoid Janeway

If you were in an apocalyptic situation and it was your job to repopulate the earth, which of these 3 remaining men would you pick?
Q. Tuvok or Mr sulu?

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 18/10/2012 19:36

Snog t'pol
Marry dax
Avoid b'lanna

degutastic · 18/10/2012 19:38

snog Picard, marry Archer and avoid Janeway for me too, riskit... Picard is somewhat sexy but would be hard to live with I fear! Archer may have been a woolly lump, but he's definitely easier to be around!

I'd pick Tuvok, for post-apolalyptic repopulation. I would rather enjoy myself with Q, but repopulating the universe with Q-human hybrids would be terrifying and disasterous I would say! At least the vulcan blood would stabilise the population a bit.

riskit4abiskit · 18/10/2012 19:52

Haha love the explanation degutastic! Q human hybrids is a great phrase

Trills · 18/10/2012 20:06

Has anyone here watched Battlestar Galactica. I'm going to guess yes.

Did you think that Gaius Baltar was like a dirty Julian Bashir?

Yama · 18/10/2012 20:07

Am watching TNG on Pick TV. It's like slipping into a lovely warm slanket - welcome back my friend.

Onetwothreeoops · 18/10/2012 20:15

So does anyone else have tickets for this weekends Star Trek
London?

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 20:16

Snog Riker, marry Chakotay, avoid Bashir.
Sorry, he's just a bit slimey.
