.....to think that the casual racism shown towards Ferengi in ST:TNG is rather unpleasant?

HalloweenyHerrena · 15/10/2012 16:48

I mean, the Ferengi have been carefully designed to be irritating but come on!

Picard saying "I have reluctantly let members of a particular ethnic group on baord the Enterprise - hopefully they won't cause trouble" just sounds wrong to me and is not in keeping with the happy-clappy 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge' ethos of the whole show. Unless the ethos is actually 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge them unless we find them personally repulsive, in which case we hoick our judgy pants right up'.

I may be over-thinking this but I still don't find it nice to watch, which is upsetting as I'm an avid TNG fan :(

Degutastic - 2 back-to-back episodes of TNG are on every weeknight on PickTV (Freeview 11) at the moment. DH despairs.

No-one's got Q on their ideal crew list? You're missing out...

degutastic · 18/10/2012 13:31

oooh thanks, mightymojo, I will have to try and stake a claim over the tv at 7 then Grin Mind you, I find it quite awkward watching Wesley rich episodes now, knowing the fantasies I had about him as a kid Shock

showtunesgirl · 18/10/2012 14:03

Ooh yes, Q. I had a big crush on him. Who wouldn't love their own omnipotent being?!

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 14:11

degu do it!

We have every episode from the start of the original series to the end of DS9 and all the films.

Never a dull moment in our house! Grin

degutastic · 18/10/2012 14:13

Folkghoul can I come live with you?

I have all of VOY (Paris obsession again) on dvd and most of the films on VHS, DS9 and TNG have been on my top secret geek wish list for years... must try harder

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 14:14

Let me just clear a space for you on the sofa...

degutastic · 18/10/2012 14:17

can I have the co-ordinates of your sofa so I can beam across as soon as the chief's ready down in engineering, please? Grin

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 14:37

What fun! We've moved away from the sex onto ideal crew lists - hurray! I have:

Captain: Janeway
First officer: Spock (Zachary Quinto rather than Leonard Nimoy)
Science officer: Chakotay
Comms:
Engineer:
Doctor: young McCoy from the ST: rebooted camp
Navigators/pilots: Harrry Kim, young Chekhov (absolutely adorable, so much more fun than Wesley)
Security:

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 14:40

I'll PM them to you.

Don't want all the riff raff turning up Wink

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 14:41

Bugger, I was still thinking about some roles, but Engineering has to be Geordi and Security Data. Not sure about Comms at all..

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 14:42

Grin at FolkGhoul's space riff raff (debris?)

Fairyjen · 18/10/2012 14:49

I'm sorry but any respectable team needs seven of nine!

For eg ggdp refers to my dc as 3 of 4 and 4 of 4

The Borg will rule the earth!!

Oh, yes, definitely Seven! I do like her. She was so interesting, and quite an appealing person - as much for her rudeness and for her vulnerable side. She was great at revealing hypocrisy, as well! Smile

There was a great episode when she and Tuvok were on a shuttle together, talking, and the effect of the two of them, conversing in monotone for such an extended period was really striking. (It was the serious version of the encounter between a Cyberman and a Dalek in Dr Who - I think in Canary Wharf - when they monotoned: "EXTERMINATE - DELETE - EXTERMINATE - DELETE" at one another for ages. That was hilarious.)

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 18/10/2012 14:58

Ideal crew:

Captain Ben sisko
First officer Spock (quinto)
Tactical officer worf (ds9)
Helm officers chekov and Paris
Bridge officer data
Engineer laforge
Operations chief O'Brien
Doctor McCoy
Science officer dax (j)
Security chief odo

And I'll have the defiant as my ship Grin

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 14:59

I think Janeway is dramatically more interesting than Picard, as he's always so ready and polished and consciously the captain of Starfleet's flagship. Bleugh.

But all of them wipe the floor with Archer of the "Enterprise" prequel; he turns into such a wet noodle!

plutocrap · 18/10/2012 15:00

Hurray! Another vote for young Spock!

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 18/10/2012 15:05

pluto have you seen the TNG episode "family"? It's set after Picard is turned into a Borg and the ship is being repaired. Picard turns into a proper human being in it and you get to see him as something other than the perfect captain. He even considers leaving Starfleet!

And has a brawl!

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/10/2012 15:16

"Bashir's ... a bit of an arrogant twat when he first arrives at DS9, but he is genetically enhanced and so probably was led to believe he was better than everyone else."

Wasn't him being genetically enhanced a secret his parents kept from him - it being illegal to genetically enhance humans? I loved that episode, where his mother explained why they did it - how he was being left behind by all his friends, and how he didn't understand how he couldn't keep up with them, and how he was becoming so unhappy that it broke her heart? Made me cry, that episode.

And yy for Alexander Siddig. Looked very sexy in Primeval with his beard.

Ideal crew :
Captain Benjamin Sisko
Chakotay
Spock (Nimoy)
The Doctor (Robert Picardo)
7 of 9
Harry Kim
Uhura (Zoë Saldana)
B'Elana
Dax
Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg running the bar in TNG)

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 15:20

I think it would be difficult to become that accomplished at everything you turned your hands to and not become arrogant though.

He wasn't your usual tutored to pass the 11+ kid was he!

By the time he got to Star Fleet he was hardly modest.

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 18/10/2012 15:21

Woop! Another sisko fan!

Ds9 is my favourite star trek. It's a frontier western! The last bit of civilization before the badlands. Keeping the downtrodden locals (bajor) protected and keeping the bandits (kardassians) at bay. Awesome.

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 15:28

I'm liking daddyman's crew apart from Sisko. No way can you choose him over Picard. and obviously no Riker.

I think I would also have Uhura on comms, she rocks.

Yep Guinan in the bar, and if you've got Riker as your no.1 don't forget he comes with a free trombone!

degutastic · 18/10/2012 15:30

Rikersbeard, there's an idea... who makes up the ideal Star Trek orchestra?

Riker on trombone,
Kim on the clarinet
Picard on that little flute thing he plays...
