.....to think that the casual racism shown towards Ferengi in ST:TNG is rather unpleasant?

I mean, the Ferengi have been carefully designed to be irritating but come on!

Picard saying "I have reluctantly let members of a particular ethnic group on baord the Enterprise - hopefully they won't cause trouble" just sounds wrong to me and is not in keeping with the happy-clappy 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge' ethos of the whole show. Unless the ethos is actually 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge them unless we find them personally repulsive, in which case we hoick our judgy pants right up'.

I may be over-thinking this but I still don't find it nice to watch, which is upsetting as I'm an avid TNG fan :(

As well as a Borg Queen!

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 17/10/2012 12:05

He probably did the Borg queen via USB. And he probably got a nasty computer virus from her too!

Scaredbutdoingit · 17/10/2012 14:13

Haha, Worf was my favourite too catgirl1976, outstripped only by Captain Kirk in TOS (which I maintain is by far the best!!!) Grin

And yes, the Ferengi are extremely sexist... but to a degree that is almost a parody, and it made for some good plotlines about confronting sexism (mostly in DS9) though.

Theres a Star Trek 'do' in London this weekend (Destination Star Trek), and I'm still plotting how I can possibly drag DH along, my inner geek is irresistably drawn to it!

showtunesgirl · 17/10/2012 14:20

Ooh maybe there should be a MN ST outing?

HalloweenyHerrena · 17/10/2012 15:27

scarybeardy - Shock & ewww!

Well since you asked, for me it's Picard, then Riker, then Worf (he does have a certain growly appeal). However Patrick Stewart has gone way down in my estimation after the money supermarket ads - I now mutter 'Patrick Stewart, you big media whore' every time he comes on while 16mo DS looks at me quizzically

I am amused by how happy people are to see a Star Trek thred Grin I second showtunesgirl's proposal!

Data is not a hottie though - have you SEEN him in Independence Day?!

For any other Wheaton fans in denial here is a link to his episode reviews. 'Cos they're funny, innit.

Much as I loved TNG, it's DS9 and Voyager for me! And Chackotay ...

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/10/2012 16:10

It's ok to like Picard and Riker, yup. Patrick Stewart is a much better actor though. Bit jealous of SecretNF.

I agree with the premise of the OP re stereotyping but I guess there's got to be goodies and baddies in a not particularly nuanced way for it to work.

auntpetunia · 17/10/2012 16:18

Oh where i totally agree Robert Beltran as Chakotay was lush, and still in though much greyer...arent we all.

ScaryBeardyDeadyman · 17/10/2012 21:26

Have any of you heard about this?

I am LOVING this thread.

10 year old degu was very much in love with Wes too Blush

And at varying points over the following couple of years, I have had things for Worf (love the pony tail in DS9), Data, Riker (I still love him!), Julian Bashir and I still think Tom Paris is perfect in every way.

Star Trek is my ultimate comfort tv series. It's like a big, spacey comfort blanket of juvenile crushes, slightly fluffy storylines and whimsical absurdities Grin

Wasn't Dax regularly sporting broken ribs in DS9 when she was with Worf, kim? Very rough in bed...

Which is something Tom would know about too, as it happens Wink

riskit4abiskit · 17/10/2012 22:32

I too admit to a Wesley crush when younger, to husband's disgust.

Loved the episode where they all went to a planet and he stepped on the grass or something else equally random and was sentenced to death!

Love the hollodeck malfunctions episodes and the back in time ones too.

My perfect crew would be

Captain Picard
Spock
Dr Bashir
Checkov
Barclay _ remember him?
Chief o brien
Worf

riskit4abiskit · 17/10/2012 22:34

Shit I forgot data. Data goes without saying right?

auntpetunia · 17/10/2012 22:38

oh Degu now Tom Paris was pretty hot, never could see what he saw in that Klingon woman B'Elanna? (sp)

Am quite liking riskit's crew but I would go for

Picard
Chakotay
Tom Paris
dr Bashir/ don't mind if he gets killed and the Hollow Dr is around...
Worf
Harry Kim
Chekov from TOS
and 7 of 9..

degutastic · 17/10/2012 22:39

O. M. G.

I had a major crush on dear old Reg too.

I think we can come to the conclusion here that I am just not fussy when it comes to 24th century officers... Grin

riskit4abiskit · 17/10/2012 22:42

What rev Barclay?! Eww

degutastic · 17/10/2012 22:42

I think my dream team would be:

Picard
Riker,
Paris,
Bashir,
Worf (partic DS9 Worf with the pony tail)
and O Brien

And if I had to have token women, 7 of 9 and Dax...

auntpetunia · 17/10/2012 22:42

Reg was a sort of buffoon didn't he have a crush on Troy? why I never could work out. And he had a phobia about energising, then got attacked by crew of another ship who were trapped as giant slugs in the transporter. Put me off the thought of transporters ever!

Riskit... data does go without saying he is just part of the furniture!

You wouldn't need a holodeck if you had Odo though would you? Grin

catgirl1976 · 18/10/2012 05:46

I would never leave the holodeck if I had one

Apart from to get the odd snack from the replicator.

Hurry up and invent these things..................

catgirl1976 · 18/10/2012 05:47

Worf would be rough. It's normal for a broken arm to feature in Klingon love making

but I like it a bit fighty
