.....to think that the casual racism shown towards Ferengi in ST:TNG is rather unpleasant?

I mean, the Ferengi have been carefully designed to be irritating but come on!

Picard saying "I have reluctantly let members of a particular ethnic group on baord the Enterprise - hopefully they won't cause trouble" just sounds wrong to me and is not in keeping with the happy-clappy 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge' ethos of the whole show. Unless the ethos is actually 'We are here to encounter new life and not judge them unless we find them personally repulsive, in which case we hoick our judgy pants right up'.

I may be over-thinking this but I still don't find it nice to watch, which is upsetting as I'm an avid TNG fan :(

A few hickies are all very well, but turning up to work in a full body cast and grinning ear to ear would probably raise some eyebrows! You'd have to pretend you'd taken up kickboxing or something... which would actually work out pretty well if you were dating Worf, come to think of it.

Can't say I have ever felt attracted to Mr Broccoli... well maybe when he was hyperintelligent and chained to the computer

As for the ladies - if I had to choose, it'd probably be Torres. Maybe I do have a Klingon thing after all Blush

Oh for the ladies, it would have to be 7 of 9. The Dr Crusher.

Maybe Deanna but she might be a bit needy afterwards :)

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 06:54

I can't believe this!

I was just coming on here to offer my opinion on the Ferengi and find it's gone all sex!

But since we're talking about it

Picard
Bashir
Data
Garak
Damar
Dukat
Hugh (I, Borg) although I was a teenager when I first discovered him so he might be a bit young for me now
Have to say Barclay because I also had a huge crush on Murdock when I was small Blush

I'm allowed my Star Trek crushes. DH approves of those.

That'll do for now.

We don't watch Voyager. DH has declared it 'Shit'.

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 07:49

God, yes, if holodecks were real... Surprised anyone gets any work done or bothers to have any real life relationships.

Picard
Riker
Tom Paris
Worf
Bones
O'Brian
(and a visit from Mr Spock)

Favourite baddies: Tribble

Callmecordelia · 18/10/2012 08:43

Can anyone enlighten me about the difference between a holodeck and a holosuite?

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 08:53

I believe that the holosuite just refers to the fact that there are a number of holodecks. So the whole area where they are is the holosuite.

It's not a luxury version of the holodeck with a separate sitting room :o

Yama · 18/10/2012 09:24

Very good Rikersbeard Grin.

showtunesgirl · 18/10/2012 09:37

Wasn't Barclay a Holodeck addict?

I am loving this thread. Such nostalgia for me.

We had Sky when I was a teenager and I would watch TNG from 5-6 Mon-Fri instead of Home and Away and Neighbours.

Scaredbutdoingit · 18/10/2012 09:38

"I think Worf might be a bit "rough" in bed."

I think thats one of the things I like about him. Grin

Scaredbutdoingit · 18/10/2012 09:40

"Wasn't Barclay a Holodeck addict?"

A major holodeck creep! If I remember right, he used the holodeck to create elaborate fantasy worlds (featuring his actual colleagues), so that he could act out his various revenge fantasies (on the ones he didn't like), and romance fantasies (on the ones he did).

shudder

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 09:41

showtunesgirl Same here.

And we still watch TNG 3 or 4 times a week in the evening and every couple of years we watch DS9 from start to finish over the winter.

We usually start once the clocks change.

Love it!

TerrariaMum · 18/10/2012 09:46

Late back to this thread, but of course Worf is rough and fanciable. Don't any of you TNG fans remember that episode where Wesley asks Worf about Klingon courtship? Apparently, the women throw things while the men recite love poetry and duck a lot. Not to mention the episode where Alexander is conceived? I believe they start by biting each other.

And I am another one who fancies Data as well, but more so when I'm pg for some reason.

WeShouldOpenABar · 18/10/2012 09:52

How is Bashir showing up on so many ideal crew casts, just how!!!!??
He's an extremely wooden actor for starters and he's terribly smug reminds me of a public schoolboy

the doctor was much better (thats a bit whovian was his name just doctor?)

showtunesgirl · 18/10/2012 09:57

No, no, Alexander Siddig is great! Did any of you see that True Love thing that was on a little while ago? He played a guy who fell in love with Jane Horrocks and it was really quite lovely.

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 10:15

WeShould Well Bashir's got a lovely face and he just needs dirtying up a bit. He's a bit of an arrogant twat when he first arrives at DS9, but he is genetically enhanced and so probably was led to believe he was better than everyone else.

NoNameNeverMind · 18/10/2012 10:15

Gul Dukat
Chakotay
Bashir
Picard
Riker

showtunesgirl · 18/10/2012 10:17

Gul Dukat? My my NoName, you ARE a bad girl. Wink

ScarePhyllis · 18/10/2012 10:30

OP, YANBU. It is a problem for any fantasy or SF universe that is so sloppily imagined that it has a mercantile race or species. It's just so hard to do that and not end up writing an anti-Semitic stereotype. The Ferengi are also consistently "othered" in a way I don't think any other species is in TNG.

I think the intention of the TNG writers was that they were meant to be uber-capitalists, but it's really no excuse. Same goes for George Lucas and Jar Jar Binks.

What is it with all you lot and Wesley? I was about the same age as you and I couldn't stand the little git. Nobody, but NOBODY in the whole of ST is sexy at all. They are all covered in pan stick makeup and have bad hair.

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 10:39

Bariel Antos anybody?
Yeah I don't get the Wes thing. Those jumpers were appalling.

phyllis riker does NOT wear panstick.

ScarePhyllis · 18/10/2012 10:41

Yeah, yeah, keep telling yourself that. Oh and that thing on his chin is a Tribble you know. Grin

FolkGhoul · 18/10/2012 10:42

No, no Bariel Antos for me.

The Bajoran's do my head in a bit.

RikersBeard · 18/10/2012 10:49

I AM NOT TRIBBLE

degutastic · 18/10/2012 12:22

Hmm, I remember Wes best in that grey almost uniform he used to wear when he was a bit older. I think I came to TNG slightly later when he was less annoying, then saw the earlier eps when I'd already developed affection for him. The jumpers would have put any sane person off for life Grin

Weshould, I like ex public school boys, and arrogance does it for me... I loved how unaccepted and hated he was at first for his misplaced attempts to make friends by showing off, but how over time he came to learn how to behave like a normal human being, and make friends. I think it appealed to me as I have the same tendancy in new groups of people Blush But then, I also fancied Barclay so perhaps I'm just mental Grin

Terrariamum, I think biting is defintiely the start of a klingon mating ritual - didn't Torres bite Paris during an early voyager ep?

TerrariaMum · 18/10/2012 12:55

I've only seen TNG so I don't know. All I remember is the half Klingon woman who is Alexander's mum seducing Worf by biting his hand and just generally being awesome (sucks that she was killed).

degutastic · 18/10/2012 13:12

I don't remember that one. It sounds awesome... I confess this thread (and Wil Wheaton's blog) has me eyeing up the complete TNG dvd set on amazon Blush
