All the disparaging references to Daily Mail

Does it not occur to you right-on caring sort, that the Daily Mail is the largest-selling newspaper in this country?

In other words, DM could reflect the views of the silent majority.

And your caring sharing good intentions could be an imposition, not an ideal or a truth.

So who are you with your sneering?

Finally: what is so heinous about a view point that gives importance to the concept of personal responsibility, and the values of the country?

When I said good articles I didn't exactly mean accurate. I mean quite interesting reading. Backtracking quickly. Grin

I don't think the DM reflects the views of the silent minority, it reflects the rather gobby majority - pub bores and other bigots who are hard of thinking.

I have not read the entire thread I freely admit. But the night they announced that the appeal court had found Amanda Knox guilty - along with numerous soundbites from concerned parties - when she was actually found NOT GUILTY leads me to believe that you can trust NOTHING that they print ever. They had a whole article ready to go that was published - and was MADE UP 100%.

Yes Madbus - love it!

OP where are you - what was the point of the question if you don't want to contribute? - did you just want to flush out the right on caring sorts?

Ah, The Daily Mail

I tried to light a fire with an abandoned copy once. Couldn't even burn the bugger.

Also, it was only through the trusty old daily that I learned that every immigrant gets a demned house. They didn't give me and Bunty a demn house when that bastard Gandhi ruined everything. Pink gin?

The health stories are a joke. Absolutely risible. There is just no way cranberries can cure that number of major diseases.

I love that Daily Mail headline generator. Cancer, Princess Diana, house prices, immigrants. And on and on.

Fuck the DM, horrible paper. No, I don't look at the website either. Hats off to the posters above who identified the Metro as the 'stealth Mail' - I have thought this for some time now, but DH reckons I've lost the plot. It is quite good for fanning oneself after dashing for the train, though.

I clearly remember a "pet shampoo causes Autism" headline. Right at the bottom of the article, it specified that one particular insecticide, which was in some anti-flea pet shampoos had possibly been linked to autism. A far cry from the headline on the front page, which had probably sent every literate pregnant woman in Britain into a panic!

I spent a very long time in a hospital waiting room today along with 7 other people. The only couple that shouted at and were vile to the nurses were the ones reading the DM.
Summed them up imho...

Jessie, and your average reader hasn't got the cognitive skills to tease out the information and differentiate (ie show some judgement)?

This is exactly the patronising 'I know what is good for you and, being caring, am morally superior to you' attitude I am trying to get you all to think about! Who are YOU to decide what is the moral good? Who are YOU to be the arbiter of what is fair?

People - no matter what their level of education - ARE able to decide what is good for them and what isn't.

I was disabused of your mind-set when I volunteered on a disturbed adolescent programme.
Those kids might have been illeterate, they might have been pregnant by their own fathers - but they knew benefits law better than any lawyer I knew.
Because it was IN THEIR INTEREST to know.

Don't underestimate people!

PS no idea of the article, but I instantly know that it is about organophosphates. I grew up w these chemicals, we dipped our dogs, horses and sheep with them and all my boys were born w minor genital defects please don't tell them I told you they are a HORRIBLE group of chemicals that are stored in fat and pregnant women need to steer clear! (Luckily they are now banned)

So are you telling me that is 'irresponsible reporting'? Because that seems your point. Either: that people are so stupid they need protecting, or that to talk about dangers is irresponsible.

Greeneyed I am a person who like people to show curiousity, and a capacity to think/change their mindset when receiving information that challenges their cognitive dissonance. What did Meynard Keynes say?

I remember in our village, I noticed that I got The Spectator and a little Oxford graduate got The New Statesman. Now, these a bastard expensive magazines, and I would love to read TNS. So I suggests to little Miss Right-on that we read our mags, and then swap. She had no intention whatsoever reading such [insert high-minded whatever]. Even though The Spectator is high on the reading list of the Labour cabinet, and had a lot of letters/contributions from Labour politicians at the time defending their policies ...

I is that sort of closed-minded superior smug dismissal and COMPLETE lack of curiosity that should be combatted. It is wrong, and it is limiting and it can be dangerous.

And smug lefties do need a gentle tickle, just a little reminder that no matter how articulate they are in the minority and their views are not universal...

I hold no brief for the Daily Mail one way or the other (as you have noticed). But the sneering? Needs a gentle poke Smile

Unfortunately it is very clear that us smug Lefties aren't the majority when such vitriol is aimed at vulnerable groups in society.

The Daily Mail sneers far better than we could even attempt .

^Emma, try not to think so badly of your fellow wo/man - that's what the Daily Heil wants you to think. The best revenge is living well, and among other things that means ignoring shite like the DM.

Yanbu. I'm tired of those who consider themselves the 'caring sort' sneering about the dm. It is the most popular newspaper website worldwide. So, whether you agree with it or not (and mostly I don't) they are reflecting the views of many. The best way to challenge these views is to discuss them in a civilized fashion but people are often too busy sneering and wanting to be seen taking the moral high ground to constructively discuss and challenge views. Shame really.

Report
LadyClariceCannockMonty · 02/10/2012 10:05

I disagree, Liketochat. I'm not denying that there is 'sneering' at the DM on this site, but it's generally a prelude to, or a smattering of sneering amidst, serious and civilised discussion about whatever issue the DM has brought up.

Report
BigStickBIWI · 02/10/2012 10:06

I don't see the sneering as much as the horror and despair at the views expressed by the Daily Mail.
