All the disparaging references to Daily Mail

Does it not occur to you right-on caring sort, that the Daily Mail is the largest-selling newspaper in this country?

In other words, DM could reflect the views of the silent majority.

And your caring sharing good intentions could be an imposition, not an ideal or a truth.

So who are you with your sneering?

Finally: what is so heinous about a view point that gives importance to the concept of personal responsibility, and the values of the country?

Am a "sidebar of shame" reader for which I make no apology. Technically it is a very good website and if Hello or OK could make their websites as good, I'm sure they would attract as many readers. Never, ever read any news in it and am often discomforted by their blatantly misogynystic treatment of women. Not surprised they're called the Daily Hate.

The West is sleepwalking to disaster. They are as blind to the discordant feedback of their Vision, as the German Nazis were in 1942'

The Daily Mail supported Nazis German in the 1930's

Merci and I am glad of it; but clearly some do.

You are of course right about clicking on it but I do some voluntary work with parents of disabled kids, and one of the mian things that I end up getting a referral from is whichever disbaility that ahs been outed by teh DM as a fraudulent attempt to claim benefits: ADHD, ASD, ME, MH problems- whatever fills a column.

Grandad buys it, and it feeds his already racist, bigoted mindset. I can tell if somene might be a friend in RL by whether they buy it, somewhat sadly. Especially when thsrt quoting from it on bookface

I do read the Mail two or three times a week. They've got some good articles on health, and fashion. I'm such a bimbo. Grin I must say I would never admit to reading in to my Book Club people. I'd get lynched!

There is clearly a large DM readership on MN. Every other link is to a DM page. I wish people wouldn't preface their links with 'Sorry, it's the Daily Fail..' If you're that embarrassed about it, don't link to it.

It's more annoying that posters feel they have to ingratiate themselves with the herd mentality of DM haters on here by endlessly apologising for linking TBH.

I feel pretty meh about the DM. I don't feel myself developing racist, misogynist tendencies whilst reading it.

They've got some good articles on health, and fashion.

Many of their health articles are hyped-up stories about some dubious research that has already been or will be later discredited.
And their stories about cosmetic surgery are straightforward advertisements for a named surgeon or clinic.

I wouldn't take any action or inaction based on what is written in the Mail, unless it was confirmed in a more reputable and convincing journal.

Anyone read the Daily Mash? I love that it always says the "institute for studies" as source of research - so Daily Mail. Problem is my Mum genuinely believes these health stories - she has a heart problem but reckons it's okay to drink/eat cake (insert unhealthy activity) because there was an article in the Daily Mail that said so. I can't tell you the amount of crap she spouts about health that she has read in the Daily Mail.

Great stuff on health yes.

Remind me- which paper started the whole 'do not vaccinate for MMR' thing? (not even what Wakefield suggested ffs!)

Report
LittleAbruzzenBear · 01/10/2012 17:37

greeneyed my Mum does the same. She tears out articles for me on how to be a good wife/lose weight/how red wine is good for you/how red wine is bad for you/it's my fault I had an emergency c-sec/how having the Euro would turn the UK into France/how the UK is over-run with gypsies....that type of thing.

Would suggest anyone coonsidering on acting on health info put out in the papers should cross reference with this - www.nhs.uk/News/Pages/NewsIndex.aspx?TopicId=&Page=2

NHS take mainstream media health articles and provide the truth behind the headlines.

Some good articles on health Hmm

My dh is (and I really mean this, and I know some people won't think it's possible) a hard working, decent GP who puts in ghastly hours (about 90-100 some weeks) to provide the absolute best service for his patients! And he reckons that 1-2 hours of his tim he could be with his family doing pointless paperwork are spent debunking dm health myths patients cut out and bring in. Every week. Of the (yes he's lucky with holidays) 46 weeks a year he works. So max 92 hours, or nearly FOUR DAYS of his working year.

He'd make the DM vanish with one glance of his powerful GP eyes!

I don't see how it can be best selling and represent a silent majority. I think people sneer at it because it's silly.

If you believed everything that you read in DM you would emigrate!

It is best-selling and represents the majority, but the majority view is not always politically correct and is not portrayed by the rest of the media. I am thinking the BBC, the 'chattering classes' who have enormous influence on policy.

Radio 4 had a shock a few years ago when it did a poll to see what law listeners would change if they could. It was very shame-faced, embarrassed and didn't really know what to do when it was revealed when the no. 1 law that people would bring back was the death penalty.

I don't think the people who buy the DM sneer at it.

You are absolutely right. Me and Marjorie were saying just the other day while we whipped up the tea for the little piccaninny immigrant family lodged in our village, that people are just so rude about it.

1.9 million circulation hardly qualifies as the silent majority in a country of over 62 million. I'd say (thankfully) they are a very small minority.

How Past Life Regression Therapy Cured My Backache!

Joanna Bloggs suffered with back pain for years. Her GP could do nothing. A friend suggested past-life regression therapy. She was sceptical, but gave it a go. The therapist revealed that her back pain was her body remembering how it had felt as she carried blocks of stone to build the pyramids, in her former life as an Egyptian slave.

Since then, Joanna Bloggs has had no backache.
