All the disparaging references to Daily Mail

Does it not occur to you right-on caring sort, that the Daily Mail is the largest-selling newspaper in this country?

In other words, DM could reflect the views of the silent majority.

And your caring sharing good intentions could be an imposition, not an ideal or a truth.

So who are you with your sneering?

Finally: what is so heinous about a view point that gives importance to the concept of personal responsibility, and the values of the country?

I can't stand the paper myself, and the way it deliberately targets specific people/issues in a manner which is clearly designed to goad.

It reflects highly unpleasant values, and if it represents the majority of views in this country then that is horrific.

It plays to the lowest common denominator.

I skim through read the Daily Mail, so what?

I don't read anyones "column" on a daily basis though, mind you Liz makes me chuckle sometimes as she's a freak absolutely barmy.

Oh and if you weren't confused before, read Jonathan Cainers Stars, you certainly will be after Grin

I read it for the comments and to feel moral indignation at the political incorrectness of it.

The Mail online is like a car crash, horrible, but I can't help rubber-necking out of morbid curiosity.

If it does reflect the general views of the majority then we really are up shit creek.

pumpkin you might not be paying for it personally out of your own pocket, but by reading it online you're certainly raising revenue for the paper.

Not that I care like...just thought I'd point it out Grin

I think you're confusing popularity with belief.

I read several online newspapers every day, the Mail being one of them. I am much more of a Guardian reader in terms of natural habitat Grin.

One of the reasons the Mail is so popular is because it really is one of the best presented online newspapers, easy to navigate and easy on the eye. I often use it as my first port of call for a quick overview and then reread a more accurate account in a broadsheet (which sometimes requires me to navigate through several pages in order to find it).

It's also popular for its 'femail' links of course, which is another issue, but suffice it to say that those who take those links seriously are probably a lost cause anyway...

A lot of people question read the Mail but not all of them will agree with it.

The Mail is OK if you don't mind the fact it totally twists things and often out and out lies, and also encourages the disparaging of women over 25 and/or overweight.

+1 to Lesley
Also what really gets my goat is that every celeb that I've never heard of is described as having "an eviable figure" and their spoilt little brats are described as "adorable". They seem to have no other adjectives.

Daily Fail.

Ongoing proof that you can't go broke underestimating the taste and with of the British public.

There's a reason that we don't have direct democracy. The Daily Mail exemplifies it.

We'd be out of Europe, sending them Poles and coloureds back, bringing back hanging and the birch. You may find Mail Watch interesting

I am by no means a socialist of any stripe, if anything a libertarian conservative, and I'd far rather be condemned to reading the Grauniad forever, than give the Daily Fascist house room.

I read the Guardian, so it would never be my paper of choice as it's right-wing. I don't despise other right-wing papers though. (Except The Sun which I loathe for lies and Page 3 and Phone hacking) I despise the DM because it hates and encourages hate. Especially of women.

I don't read it on-line. even when it is linked to here and I really really want to know I read it at my PIL's house just so that I know what the enemy is up to.

I read it on the coffee shop sometimes. I live on Surrey. Sometimes cafes only have The Mail. It's like a right wing caffeine conspiracy.

It is dreadful on news and most things to do with women. And celebrities. And anythingo do with poor people or people who are forrin.

The sport is quite good though and often they have a couple of pages dedicated to illnesses that no one has ever heard of but which nearly killed a sad faced woman until one day her friend told her that rubbing boiling sausage on your husbands scrotum would cure it.
I love those.

I do roar though at the people who complain bitterly about it yet endlessly link to it.

Well, considering they lie, I read them as entertainment, not news.

The latest lie was what happened in Saturday's Doctor Who. Important? No. But proof that they have no moral compass. If it makes a good story, they print it. Who cares if it's true?

hahahahahahhahahahhahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

It's a rag. If it reflects the view of the "silent" majority then God help the UK.

all the papers are bloody slanted and omit and miss things out!

they are all on thier own agenda....

OMISSION IS THE GREATEST LIE.

you should read all the papers if you want to get some sort of balancised view on soemthing never ever ever just one or two even.

I used to write for the DM

Me too

Or those who tut at how women are portrayed in the media for their weight/age/looks etc and yet they can't get enough of the 'Celeb gossip' columns which are nearly always about or include those things.

It's as though they just don't get the fact they're actively encouraging that sort of reporting by reading it online.

I expect that's why so many people have < cough > 'friends' 'colleagues' and 'parents' who buy it and leave it lying around Grin

It seemed like a great idea at the time! Confused
And as I say, I still love to read it. I think it has become a parady of itself

Dysfunctional - So what was it like to write for DM? Were you free to make it all up, or was there a minimum need to have some semblance to what actually happened?

Report
HmmThinkingAboutIt · 01/10/2012 11:40

People stare at car crashes.

I think that sums up why I think the DM is popular. The sick bit of humanity, rather than because they actually like it and agree with it.
