Does it not occur to you right-on caring sort, that the Daily Mail is the largest-selling newspaper in this country?

In other words, DM could reflect the views of the silent majority.

And your caring sharing good intentions could be an imposition, not an ideal or a truth.

So who are you with your sneering?

Finally: what is so heinous about a view point that gives importance to the concept of personal responsibility, and the values of the country?

MrSunshine maybe.
Don't get me wrong, I dislike the DM. I just feel that the reaction to it from some quarters is sort of out of proportion and slightly silly...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 14:09

Definitely gin time Minnie!

Grin

DM readers aren't very silent. Too much to say about scrounging immigrants.

greeneyed · 01/10/2012 14:18

Ha Ha hilarious OP - were you a bit bored this morning? Have you read this paper? My parents read and quote the DM, they are seriously fucked up people. the problem is some people believe everything they see in print and if their only dose of news is coming from the Daily Mail that is frankly scary. All power to those who read it (car crash viewing) enjoy the showbiz, gossip etc but can filter out the bilge (most of it).

aloysiusflyte · 01/10/2012 14:19

'It has to be the truth because I read it in the Daily Mail'

Always makes me chuckle!

MamaMary · 01/10/2012 14:24

It is the most quoted and linked-to paper on Mumnset by a country mile. Come on, admit it, we all read it. Wink

It often has salicious details that are left out of the more 'worthy' news outlets such as the BBC and is therefore more gossipy informative.

Often it highlights stories that other media outlets simply ignore.

aloysiusflyte · 01/10/2012 14:24

As well as despair that people actually believe this stuff Sad

Peachy · 01/10/2012 14:27

'The West is sleepwalking to disaster. They are as blind to the discordant feedback of their Vision, as the German Nazis were in 1942' (Thomas Sowell)'

That's actually funny- if terrifying- used in defence of the DM.

How do I know? Well let's see, years working with people in poverty, qualifications in world religions and autism.... I Know Stuff.

Sadly, it's not true that teh Sun doesn;t sell in Liverpool, Dh would send lorryloads up tehre.

MrsY · 01/10/2012 14:37

Re: the links, how often does the post say - look, this story is really well written and a great example of quality journalism about an important issue in society? Find one and I'll read the paper.

greeneyed · 01/10/2012 14:39

aloy, hilarious - I've sent it to my mum and dad, that will get their goat!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 14:47

I have just hooted at the youtube clip! Hooted and then wept because MIL really does think all their crap and bile is true.

jkklpu · 01/10/2012 14:50

Haven't read more than the first few posts, so someone else may already have pointed out to OP that DM is not the best-selling newspaper in the country at all (The Sun is); it's the most-visited news website. So I'd say there was a bit of a difference between people wanting to pay the cover price and those having a sneaky look for free at its drivel.

jkklpu · 01/10/2012 14:51

PS "the values of the country" - who says? What a ridiculous concept.

Devora · 01/10/2012 15:34

OP, you are Jan Moir and I claim my Body Shop gift set.

Aboutlastnight · 01/10/2012 16:14

They did expose the Stephen Lawrence 'five suspects' splashed across the front page. I actually think that was a principled act and it certainly revived the whole investigation which had been a whitewash until then and sparked the inquiry.

I don't recall it breaking many other important stories - but that it symptomatic across print journalism: focus on celebrity whether it's x Factor wannabes or fucking Alex James In the broadsheets, opinion pieces, lifestyle nonsense but very little actual investigation about things that matter.

CandiStaton · 01/10/2012 16:19

ah! they are cute...are they 2 twinses? or the same person?

Dildobaggins · 01/10/2012 16:25

It is not the largest selling newspaper in the country. That honor goes to the Sun.

I love all the sneerers 'I don't actually buy it'. Every time you go to the site, and click on an article, your visit is 'registered' the numbers of people visiting the site determines how much the DM can charge advertisers.
Please don't delude yourselves that you are something special because you don't physically hand over coins for the paper.
You are a DM reader.

Tee2072 · 01/10/2012 16:32

But I don't buy it. And I use AD Blocker on my browser.

So they are not making much money from me.

But I also never say I don't read it. I read it all the time. Grin But it's not news. It's like reading Hello or Closer or what have you.

I know that these people are xenophobic. I hear my friend talking about Polish people. I am one, second generation. He talks about 'them' in terms that are pure DM. I asked, when he was spouting this stuff, "do you read the Daily Fail then?". Of course, the answer was yes he did. He is himself an immigrant but doesn't see the irony. The DM encourages this nasty, racist, easy to hate agenda.

I don't read it, click on the links or give much weight to people who get their opinions from it.

mercibucket · 01/10/2012 16:40

plenty of scousers still don't buy the sun, thank you very much!

LittleAbruzzenBear · 01/10/2012 16:53

The DM do seem to hate women. Example, they hate skinny girls with no boobs who look 'dangerously underweight', they hate size 12-14 girls who 'are embracing their shape', they hate obese women 'who have to have c-secs', they hate SAHMs, mums on benefits, working mums......etc. There are people like myself who sometimes read it online, just to post a comment to wind up all the women-hating posters who seem to live in Thailand.
