Does it not occur to you right-on caring sort, that the Daily Mail is the largest-selling newspaper in this country?

In other words, DM could reflect the views of the silent majority.

And your caring sharing good intentions could be an imposition, not an ideal or a truth.

So who are you with your sneering?

Finally: what is so heinous about a view point that gives importance to the concept of personal responsibility, and the values of the country?

OP posts:
dysfunctionalme · 01/10/2012 11:42

The rule of writing for the DM is to find case studies who any decent person would abhore, persuade them to talk, then betray them horribly.

PutABellOnMe · 01/10/2012 11:43

Oh gosh yes, what is so heinous about it's disgusting homophobia, racism, sexism and outright xenophobia? If the hate the Daily Mail peddles is the view of the silent majority then, frankly, I'd be utterly disgusted with this country. I'll stick with being a 'right-on caring sort' (I love that you actually think that's an insult Hmm)

LesleyPumpshaft · 01/10/2012 11:43

dysfunctionalme. I have often thought that writing for the Fail would be highly entertaining. Many articles seem very tongue in cheek and are frankly hilarious. Also, does anyone ever check the site for typos, grammar and spelling?

booge · 01/10/2012 11:44

It's reactionary bigoted drivel, I'm ashamed to say I read it almost every day.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/10/2012 11:45

I love the way the OP sneers at people being "right on caring sorts"

Yes, it's much better to be a hard hearted bastard!

headfairy · 01/10/2012 11:46

It's pretty poorly written IMO, reproduces some pretty heinous opinions on women and immigrants and has printed quite a few blatant lies. Of course all newspapers can be accused of the last one, but as a female child of immigrants I take exception to the middle ones. Oh and it hates my employer with a passion and wants to get rid of us, which would leave me without a job and the country without one of the jewels in it's crown so all in all, certainly not my first paper of choice.

In a chicken and egg kind of way, I'm not sure if the Daily Fail represents the majority view of this country, or if the views of the majority are being influenced by the Daily Fail, and I'm not sure which is more worrying.

Pandemoniaa · 01/10/2012 11:46

Finally: what is so heinous about a view point that gives importance to the concept of personal responsibility, and the values of the country?

I see little evidence that the DM interpretation of the "values of the country" have moved on from the days when they supported Mosley and his British Union of Fascists.

dysfunctionalme · 01/10/2012 11:49

Lesley the online site is run separately to the newspaper and clearly the fact-checking is below par. This is quite common in online publishing with the rush to get stories out. And the DM does carry a LOT of stories. But at the moment it comes across as very confused, trying to be UK & American, stories on the left all outraged about beneficiaries and porn, stories on the right strictly porn. Yes it can be a lot of fun doing the outraged stories.

NellyJob · 01/10/2012 11:51

isn't the Daily Mail online Orwell's 'two minute hate' from 1984?

Portofino · 01/10/2012 11:55

It is a steaming pile of misogynist shite.

Dahlen · 01/10/2012 11:56

I think the editors at the DM are well-aware that the outraged leftwingers who rail against the stories in the DM promote circulation just as much as the outraged rightwingers who love stories that boost their sense of moral superiority.

In truth, its misogynistic, xenophobic stance is creepy, but it sells because you either love it or hate it and many who hate it have to keep checking on it because they hate it. It;s like pubs and the economy - alcohol is popular both with those celebrating their success and those commiserating their poverty.

happybubblebrain · 01/10/2012 11:59

I really can't stand the Daily Mail.
But the free Metro is worse, more sneeky and owned by the same people as the Daily Mail.

LesleyPumpshaft · 01/10/2012 12:09

happybubblebrain - Like a stealth Mail?

nellyjelly · 01/10/2012 12:14

It hates women. If you read it on one hand it slags off women who claim benefts as single mums yet also berates 'career women' for neglecting their kids. It rails against women who have plastic surgery yet takes the piss out of women who dare to age. It is a horrible paper. Who can forget the horrific Jan Moir and her attack on Stephen Gately. Homophobia at it's worst.

Mass media reflects and also forms public opinion. It is not neutral. People believe the shite they write and buy into it unf.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 01/10/2012 12:15

'Does it not occur to you right-on caring sort, that the Daily Mail is the largest-selling newspaper in this country?'

I'm well aware of how popular it is (and I would guess that most people on this thread are too). Doesn't mean I can't loathe its misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia etc.

'the values of the country?' Define what you mean by that and perhaps we can have a proper conversation.

And I second MrSunshine: 'If the majority is racist sexist homophobic misogynistic class and money obsessed spite mongerers, they can all go fuck themselves in the same way as if they were a small minority.'

HTH.

Peachy · 01/10/2012 12:19

Just because something is popular, doesn't make it right. And as someone who knows her stuff in her own field, I have read too many blatantly misleading pieces on the DM sites to believe them in any way ignorant or naive.

It is impossible to fit the DM model of existence- and that itself is insidious. Female and working? awful! female and not working- drain and parasite! Female carer- simultaneous parasitic drain AND angelic super woman (head explodes>

DH worked in the newspaper industry, not as a journo but logistics, and so we buy no paper at all; we've seen too much. The Guardian would reflect my philosophy but I don't want to read only what people Like Me Think anyway, tbh. I'd rather read facts, stats and peer reviewed reports.

WinklyFriedChicken · 01/10/2012 12:19

Dm is only the second largest selling paper in the country.

It only accounts for (roughly) 1 in 4 papers sold in the UK.

It has a circulation of just under 2 million

WinklyFriedChicken · 01/10/2012 12:21

Posted before I finished - in no way do those numbers point to it representing the majority of the population (60 million or more?) of the actual population or even the newspaper buying population . So OP yabu and factually incorrect.

Peachy · 01/10/2012 12:21

'And I second MrSunshine: 'If the majority is racist sexist homophobic misogynistic class and money obsessed spite mongerers, they can all go fuck themselves in the same way as if they were a small minority.' '

Quite.

I'd like to add selectively disablist to that list too: injured serviceman good / adhd, MS, ME or autism bad. I mean, wtf? life is too short.

WinklyFriedChicken · 01/10/2012 12:22

Link with circulation figures

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 01/10/2012 12:25

I sneer because it's beyond shit. And if that means I'm sneering at the views of the majority, then so be it.

HTH.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 12:33

As Peachy says, just because something is popular doesn't mean it is right.

My MIL believes everything it tells her, I bet she is like many, and that frightens me. Bloody thing is racist, misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, spiteful, scaremongering, and loves the Tories. That last says it all really.

Saltycopporn · 01/10/2012 12:34

The Daily Mail is beyond satire. Using this mail headline generator, I came across a few stories I'm sure I've read before

don't worry it's not the fail

IneedAsockamnesty · 01/10/2012 12:49

i have a theory about the daily mail,im not sure what i base it on and im not sure why but its my theory and i like it very much (the theory not the paper)

the daily mail is brought by two types of people type one being people who really want to buy the sun (the actual best selling paper in the uk acording to the audit bureau of circulations and has been pretty much consistantly for the last 2 decades.you will also get the same answer out of most newsagents if you ask which one sells the most unless you are in liverpool) but are to embarrised to buy the sun because they dont want anybody to know they really want to buy the sun so they buy the mail flick through it then wait till someone finishes with the sun and read that.

or

its routinely bought and intentionall bought by people who need to be told what to think and that by following the thought process of the mail they think that somehow makes them better than a red top reader.

these days i rarely bother with newspapers but if something is going on that i would like to read about then i will buy a copy of every newspaper apart from the express and read all of them (i cant read the express because the paper smells funny).

if im making paper mache stuff with the kids i get the inderpendant as i think it makes better masks

Abitwobblynow · 01/10/2012 13:01

"there's not much more to say. And if it truly does reflect the view of the silent majority, then they are in dire need of a decent education"

  • which statement perfectly proves my point. Who are YOU to decide what is desirable and what is the moral good? Why are YOUR good intentions, more valid than the majority?

'The Vision of the Anionted - Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy' - Thomas Sowell.

'The West is sleepwalking to disaster. They are as blind to the discordant feedback of their Vision, as the German Nazis were in 1942' (Thomas Sowell)
