To lock our bollard into place?

ontheedgeofwhatever · 13/09/2012 14:18

Someone has parked on our drive for the third time this week - I have no idea who they are as both times they've been there when I come back from the morning school run and gone when I come back from the evening one.

The last owners of our house installed a small bollard that can be pulled up from the ground and padlocked in place. It makes it impossible to get into our out of the drive. I've already left 2 polite notes asking them not to park on our drive. AIBU if I lock the bollard and go out for a few hours?

No you wouldnt be, you have left 2 notes and they have ignored you. Are they parking there all day?

BrianButterfield · 13/09/2012 14:19

Probably YABU, but I would definitely want to do it! So satisfying.

bumpybecky · 13/09/2012 14:20

yanbu cheeky sods!

meboo · 13/09/2012 14:20

Of course you are not BU.

EldritchCleavage · 13/09/2012 14:20

Do it! It's that or wait until they have parked and then put up the bollard... cue interesting conversation when whoever it is knocks on your door asking to be released!

Empusa · 13/09/2012 14:20

I'd definitely do that. If they are ignoring polite notes, then that's what they deserve.

Who on earth thinks it's ok to park on someone's drive anyway?

HappyCamel · 13/09/2012 14:21

I might do it but then stay in, so that when they came back I could call the police if they trashed the garden or something. Alternatively, leave it this time but start putting the bollard up when you go out for a few weeks. Seems it isn't a new problem if the previous owners had the bollard installed in the first place.

MrsKwazii · 13/09/2012 14:22

I'd be very tempted to do it. Might be worth writing one more note stating that this is what will happen if they do it again?

BiddyPop · 13/09/2012 14:22

As in, locking their car INTO your driveway?

I would say YANBU if you have already left notes, your own house is not a public parking space.

But are you liekly to get into any legal difficulties? (Would a quick call to the 101 police non-emergency number be useful to check this in advance, or even just let them know what you are doing in case the owner rings them?)

BellaVita · 13/09/2012 14:22

I would do it and go out.

Cheeky buggers.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 13/09/2012 14:22

YANBU it's your drive, lock the bugger in.

NoobytheWaspSlayer · 13/09/2012 14:23

YANBU! and please PLEASE do it. You have asked politely twice, and it's your private driveway. What kind of a twat parks in someones private driveway anyway?

redlac · 13/09/2012 14:24

Lock the buggers in - but could you install a webcam so we can all see their reaction when they come back and realise they can't get off your drive?? :)

I would do it in a heartbeat!

What idiots people can be! We had this when we lived in a flat with parking. Someone parked across the entrance to the car park so none of the 12 flats could get their cars in or out! They were gone all day until the council parking people came and towed it awayGrin

This was Brighton with strict civil parking regulations and they were on the road so they dealt with it pretty efficiently.

sugarice · 13/09/2012 14:27

Parking on your drive Shock this is the kind of thing that would cause my red mist to descend Angry.

So when you come back from the school run you can't access your own driveway?

Socknickingpixie · 13/09/2012 14:27

yanbu, but i wouldnt go out as if you do they may ruin your bollard perhaps the walk of shame to knock on your door will stop them, im guessing its the same car each time?

ontheedgeofwhatever · 13/09/2012 14:27

Parking is very restricted around here. We've had the house for 2 years and not had a problem like this before but clearly someone thinks its appropriate to do this. Might do what MrsKawzii suggests (ie leave a note warning them they will be locked in if they do it again) and then wait to see what happens. Only fair to warn them i suppose

eurochick · 13/09/2012 14:28

Yes, lock them in so they have to come and knock at your door to get out.

henrysmate · 13/09/2012 14:29

Lock the car in, pour yourself a cup fo tea and sit back to enjoy the fun. Anyone who parks on a stranger's drive deserves it.

Rubirosa · 13/09/2012 14:29

I would do it but stay in so they are forced to knock on your door and apologise to be released.

sugarice · 13/09/2012 14:29

I would put the bollard up after you've reversed out to stop them even getting on it in the first place, I wouldn't want their car left there all day.

jimswifein1964 · 13/09/2012 14:30

Could you drive be misconstrued as not public in any way? Is it next to an open piece of land etc? I cant believe anyone would do that!

OhSoSimple · 13/09/2012 14:30

I would put a sign up saying it is a clamping area and any cars parked on the driveway will be clamped. Say the release fine is £150. You must be able to look up the official wording for this online. They will either stop parking there or actually do clamp them!!!
