to think sitting in a pub, drinking alone is quite a sad thing to do

Me and DH went out to a pub yesterday afternoon and in the pub there were at least 8 men sat at tables on their own drinking. I've noticed this before and you never see women doing this and I think its quite sad to just be sat there drinking on your own. DH disagrees though and says that maybe they just enjoy a quiet Pint or two. AIBU?

Each to their own.

FallenCaryatid · 10/08/2012 12:18

Well, what with the lack of sheds nowadays, how is a bloke supposed to get a break from the relentless demands of their lives, and all that bloody talking that goes on?
A quiet pint sounds lovely.

WorraLiberty · 10/08/2012 12:18

Do you feel the same way when you see someone having a coffee alone in Starbucks?

maybenow · 10/08/2012 12:18

i sometimes go to starbucks and sit with a cup of tea reading the paper alone. it's bliss.
i imagine the pub is the same for these blokes.

helloclitty · 10/08/2012 12:18

YABU I happily sit in a pub on my own with a paper and enjoy the the fact no-one will talk to me and I can get lost in my own thoughts for once.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 10/08/2012 12:19

I would love to go to the pub and have a drink on my own.

I'm single and know that I'm not going to meet anyone lying in bed which is what I am currently doing.

I'm not brave enough tho.

DawnOfTheDee · 10/08/2012 12:21

I sometimes sit in a pub by myself. Don't get opportunity so much now i have DD but before if i was on my way home from work or was in town I'd pop into a pub and have a nice quiet sit down with a pint. Would usually have the paper or a book to read though.

Really don't get why some people think you can't be having a pleasant time or be enjoying yourself just because you're on your own. I also prefer going to the cinema by myself to. Yes, I have friends but i'm also very happy in my own company.

boschy · 10/08/2012 12:21

I quite like going to a pub or a wine bar on my own - if I'm out shopping for the day or something, I like a little glass of something in the middle of the day.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/08/2012 12:22

I don't see how it's different from a coffee. Lots of people seem to go to the pub round here to use the free wifi. When I used to share a room with DH in a shared house, I'd go to cafes/pubs quite a lot just to give him a bit of space, it's nice. And it helps you concentrate on a book or a paper in a way you sometimes can't at home.

I'm sure some people drown their sorrows, though, and obviously that's by definition a bit sad (ie., upsetting).

Iheartpasties · 10/08/2012 12:24

oh my god this sounds like heaven, I would love to go and do this. a quiet half hour and a drink. sounds ace.

DawnOfTheDee · 10/08/2012 12:25

I find it sad that some people seem to be scared of their own company and can't do anything without it being a group activity.

nuilt · 10/08/2012 12:25

YANBU my brother does this, he claims he enjoys it and that when he was a student that some of his ideas for his dissertation were formulated sat alone in a pub pint in hand Hmm .

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/08/2012 12:25

When I've got all day in town, I often go and have a glass of wine at lunchtime and sit and read the paper.

WerthersUnOriginal · 10/08/2012 12:25

Yabu. 3 weeks into school holidays and it sounds positively glorious.

I do have this stupid (dated and old fashioned) feeling of being uncomfortable drinking alone in pubs though as a woman. It seems so silly in this day and age and is because it wasn't done when I was younger. I hope todays young 'uns don't have such hang ups.

Hammy02 · 10/08/2012 12:25

YABU. I occassionally go to a pub on my own. Quite happy to sit in the beer garden with a glass of wine & a good book. What's sad about that? I think it is sad that tens of millions of people sit in their house, glued to Britains Got Talent or some such rubbish on a Saturday night.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 10/08/2012 12:26

Why is that strange, nuilt? Loads of people say that sort of thing and it's probably true.

Sometimes you need time to sit alone and think, and some people do that best where there's background noise and a nice pint*.

  • 'a' being the key word. More, and you're not so good! Grin
tryingtonotfeckup · 10/08/2012 12:27

Sounds like heaven, no crying or someone going , "Muuuuuuuuuummmmmm...."

roundtable · 10/08/2012 12:27

YABU - I used to go to all sorts of places by myself pre dc. Not because I didn't have anyone to go with but because I enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Some of those people may be in that town/city due to business. Should they stay in their hotel room staring at the tv?

wankpants · 10/08/2012 12:28

What kind of sad do you mean OP? As in "get a life" sad, or boohoo sad?

DawnOfTheDee · 10/08/2012 12:28

Why do you doubt him nuilt? Would be a weird thing for him to lie about....

NotInGuatemalaNowDrRopata · 10/08/2012 12:28

You should have gone in and clapped your hands and rounded them up and told them all to sit together. Their reactions may have told you what you need to know Grin

wankpants · 10/08/2012 12:30

I sometimes feel boohoo sad for those I see eating alone...until i cop on and think they're probably happy as larry about it!

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 10/08/2012 12:31

I often have a glass of wine somewhere on my own.
Or a coffee (just got back from Petersham Nurseries £££coffee and cake but gorgeous)

I'd rather be on my own.

dryu · 10/08/2012 12:32

I feel sad for them because it strikes me as being a very lonely existance. Just sitting there drinking with no-one for company
