to be really annoyed about scented Always pads?

I?ve used Always since they first came out in the UK (waaaay back when) and always (sorry) been happy with them. They were a revelation after the inch-thick leaky horrors of my early teens. Anyway, I notice they are now only available scented ? at least the ones I use (Night ? for those heavy heavy times). WHY???? Not only do I really dislike the heavy implication that a) my fanjo smells terrible and b) I don?t know to wash myself and wear clean underwear, but the smell makes me heave - it?s like the worst elements of synthetic old-lady and teenager perfumes mixed together ? and I really don?t want to stick chemicals right on my most sensitive part. Bought some last month because I hadn?t realised they were scented, and while I can almost never smell my own period I can constantly smell the stupid scent.

Thanks a bunch Always Angry I shall be switching to Boots? own brand from now on (until they become bloody scented as well)

I would definitely use a mooncup if I could fit any of them into me but I can't!

YANBU

DS is 11 weeks old, so what with pregnancy and bf I haven't had a period for a year. I've used Always since forever and now have no idea what to use when the time comes. So annoying. Really resent this trend of having to make our bits smell 'pretty', and that's before we get to the fact that I don't want chemicals down there for no good reason.

VolAuVent · 01/08/2012 13:46

The scented pads just add to the stale blood smell, they don't get rid of it.

MindTheElephant · 01/08/2012 13:46

I dont use always now for this very reason. I found before that sanitary towels did smell anyway as soon as they were "used" but the smell with the scented ones is ten times worse and i found the scented ones made me itch really badly every time i used them.

I now use a brand called Septona,I got them from a discount shop 59p for 20 but they are even cheaper in asda and tesco, 25p for 20 (according to price comparison sites) And they are brilliant. They cope really well with my heavy periods and do not have any smell at all once used!!!

I will continue to use these and buy them at asda!!!!

YADNBU

It is a horrible horrible smell and not needed. The smell makes the fact you have a period more obvious IME as the smell is horrendous!

They could at least offer a scented and unscented version of their normal product. Let us choose.

venuesandmarathons · 01/08/2012 17:23

YANBU. I too have used Always for many years, but have thrown out what remained because of the horrid smell.

Thanks to all of you who have posted about alternative pads - I'll be off experimenting with those, and hoping that none of them follow Proctor and Gamble's lead in this. "P&G - Proud sponsors of olympic stinking sanitary towels"

DukeHumfrey · 01/08/2012 18:21

Always said (quoted from above):
"You may have noticed a scent from the new Always Ultra pad. This is not intentionally added but comes from the odour neutralizing ActiPearl? technology."

But my packet had Actipearls logo (in PINK! Pah!) and says "Odour neutralisation technology that contains a light scent".

So how can it not be intentionally added?

Anyway it's not a "light scent" it's a strong pong.

whathasthecatdonenow · 01/08/2012 18:31

I've been really disappointed with the scented pads. I changed to Always because Kotex seemed to disappear from the shops around here, I think it is time to hunt out a new brand. I did like the Always Silk but none of the shops here sell them in Super anymore, and normal are just pathetic for me, so they are out. Interested to see people like bodyform - I didn't like them last time I tried, but it was years ago so I might give them another go next time.

LadySybildeChocolate · 01/08/2012 18:31

I recon it's a 'forced bonding' exercise so we can spot someone else who's on their AF. All we have to do is sniff. {boak}

confusedpixie · 01/08/2012 18:47

Yadnbu. I can't use them, they make me really site and uncomfortable underneath, no clue why! Had to switch brands as I can't find them unscented in my local shops :(

Krumbum · 01/08/2012 18:58

There's always bodyform although they arnt as sticky :(
Or lilets now make pads! (called 'teen' pads in silly packaging in though Blush)

Krum: I find bodyform absolutely rubbish admittedly. The design of them is weird and they're really uncomfortable and plastic-y. I have a packet in the cupboard that I use one of every month before remembering why I don't use them Blush

I love the little lilet bags, but it seems a waste to buy a new bag everytime, unnecessary but cute packaging Hmm

mummysmellsofsick · 01/08/2012 21:15

Yadnbu. The implication being being told our bodies smell bad and wrong? What kind of message does this send to teenage girls? and I can't bear perfumes anyway. Have used natracare for years due to sweaty nasty feeling of always, but will be double sure not to buy them now

Ixia · 01/08/2012 21:40

I react to perfumed stuff badly, but the upshot of this is I've now discovered Lil-lets make towels, their night time ones are fab.

MainlyMaynie · 01/08/2012 21:50

That's really annoying. I won't be using Always again if my periods ever come back.

perceptionreality · 01/08/2012 21:58

kotex?

clairemarie2702 · 14/08/2012 17:25

I complained to Always about the new scent in their Always as i am very sensitive and it gives me thrush (embarrassing) Here is their response and how i have replied, will keep you posted.
I dont ever complain but they annoyed me!!!!

Thank you for your email to Always.

I am very sorry to learn about the trouble you've reported to us and do hope the symptoms have improved.

Although I appreciate how unpleasant this experience may have been, I would like to reassure you that we have a background of having a careful and thorough approach where the safety of our products is concerned. However, we can never rule out the rare
i replied- (SEE THE FOLLOWING LINKS, THIS REACTION IS CERTAINLY NOT RARE - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a1530210-to-be-really-annoyed-about-scented-Always-pads AND beaut.ie/blog/2012/women-you-reek-please-cover-yourselves-with-acti-pearls-immediately/)

possibility of someone having a personal sensitivity to any ingredient which may possibly be the case with this skin reaction
i replied - (yeast infection in not a skin reaction). Unfortunately, if anyone experiences a personal sensitivity to something, it is beyond anyone's control (you can offer both products therefore it is in your control to reduce the complaints you are currently receiving)
and can only be absolutely confirmed by a medical professional. If your symptoms continue, get worse or you become concerned for any reason, please come back to us.

i replied - (YOU HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO PROVE THAT YOUR PRODUCT IS SAFE, HAVE YOU HAD A MEDICAL PRACTITIONER CONFIRM THAT YOUR PRODUCT DOES NOT CAUSE YEAST INFECTIONS?)

You may have noticed a scent from the new Always Ultra pad. This is not intentionally added but comes from the odour neutralizing ActiPearl? technology
i replied - (THE PEARLS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PRESENT YOU HAVE JUST MADE THEM SCENTED, HOW IS THIS NOT INTENTIONAL?) .

Our intensive
i replied - (ONLY 2000 WOMEN, HOW MANY WOMEN USE YOUR PRODUCTS? WHAT DURATION OF TIME DID THE RESEARCH COVER? DID YOU TRIAL THE PRODUCT ON WOMEN?)
consumer research among over 2000 women has shown that odour control is the second most important benefit for women after reliable protection. We designed Always Ultra ActiPearls? to be as absorbent and protective as the previous product but now with added benefit of odour control
i replied - ( WHY NOT KEEP BOTH PRODUCTS? AND KEEP ALL CUSTOMERS?) . ActiPearl? technology is not applied to the surface of the pad but contained inside the pad so there is no direct contact with the skin. All of our Always products are dermatologically tested for skin compatibility
i replied - (IT ISN'T THE SKIN COMPATIBILITY IT IS THE IN-BALACE OF YEAST THE SCENT CREATES).
If you want to purchase a product without the ActiPearl? technology then Always Silk, Freshelle, Fresh, and Simply Fit are available. If you want a product without scent then we would recommend you using Always Simply Fit and Always Ultra with Freshelle.

i replied - (THESE PRODUCTS DON'T OFFER THE SAME PROTECTION AS ALWAYS NIGHT AND LONG WHICH I AND MANY OTHERS NEED)

We would love you to continue using our Always products and I have posted you out a coupon for your next purchase
i replied - (I DO NOT WISH TO RECEIVE A TOKEN VOUCHER, HOW MANY OF THESE VOUCHERS HAVE YOU SENT DUE TO THIS COMMON COMPLAINT?).
I hope you will accept this with our compliments. The coupon will be valid for 3 months and please allow 7-10 days for this to arrive.

I hope this helps. If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to call me on freephone (UK) 0800 0850367 or write to me via return email.

StickyFloor · 14/08/2012 17:34

I am so glad it is not just me who noticed this. They smell so bad, and the smell is so strong that my entire cupboard stinks. I can even smell it through my pants and clothes when fully dressed.

I have never had a problem with a smelly fanjo to my knowledge, but since using these evil things I have had comments from children, my husband, and even a friend asked if I was using a new washing powder! It is absolutely awful.

Once I have used up the last packet I will be switching brand, such a shame.

DoItOnce · 14/08/2012 17:35

I got the same reply. I really can't stand the smell. I don't like any perfumed products but the smell from these is particularly vile.

BertieBotts · 14/08/2012 18:09

Lil lets do pads now and I noticed my packet said "Prevents odour without the use of perfumes" so it sounds like they're pretty anti.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 14/08/2012 18:18

I got the same reply, I hadn't linked to this site but I really hope they read it.
I got a voucher last week, I'll try a different product of theirs but I may just change to the lil-let's pads if I can find them.

MarysBeard · 14/08/2012 18:29

I just buy supermarket own brand. Scented pads MY ARSE :)

CanoeSlalom · 14/08/2012 21:45

What is the chemical "active ingredient" in Actipearl?

DoItOnce · 14/08/2012 22:18

This is my guess for the active ingredient
