to be really annoyed about scented Always pads?

I?ve used Always since they first came out in the UK (waaaay back when) and always (sorry) been happy with them. They were a revelation after the inch-thick leaky horrors of my early teens. Anyway, I notice they are now only available scented ? at least the ones I use (Night ? for those heavy heavy times). WHY???? Not only do I really dislike the heavy implication that a) my fanjo smells terrible and b) I don?t know to wash myself and wear clean underwear, but the smell makes me heave - it?s like the worst elements of synthetic old-lady and teenager perfumes mixed together ? and I really don?t want to stick chemicals right on my most sensitive part. Bought some last month because I hadn?t realised they were scented, and while I can almost never smell my own period I can constantly smell the stupid scent.

Thanks a bunch Always Angry I shall be switching to Boots? own brand from now on (until they become bloody scented as well)

Can't stand scented ones - the artificial perfume makes me want to heave!

Natracare do organic/natural pads, and cotton tampons without synthetic materials or chemical additives.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 31/07/2012 21:05

I'm afraid it's disposables for me. Couldn't use reusable nappies on DS either for the same reason. I would much rather these natural unpleasantries were fastened up and disposed of asap without me having to become intimately acquainted with them!

MrsBaggins · 31/07/2012 21:06

I find using a mooncup easier than tampons - I dont have to remember to bring them for a start.
Empty, rinse ,reinsert - it is that easy.
Not sure why people feel the need to make out its so unpleasant or difficult.(when they havent tried them Wink )

Tampons tampons tampons, can't stand any towels.

Dd 12 has just started using tampons after 3 months of towels, the smile of relief says it all.

However I do know some people prefer towels and have no idea why they be scented, sounds like thrush city!!! Yeuk!!

MrsBaggins · 31/07/2012 21:12

Desperately - I dont examine my menstrual products Grin ( although Im sure there are some who do !)
The only difference between a disposable and a washable is that you fold up the washable and then undo as you place in the machine. In fact they are so absorbant i rarely notice lots of blood - honestly. It aint all blood and gore Grin

LJ29 · 31/07/2012 21:14

I can understand its annoying if you have always used this brand but there really are plenty of good quality alternatives, no one is making you use them...

DukeHumfrey · 31/07/2012 21:21

But I only put the washing machine on once a week or fortnight. Not having bloody towels lurking in the dirty clothes basket for days on end, thanks! Nor hand-washing them.

Tried mooncup, couldn't get on with it - it hurt.

So tampons plus disposable towels here cos tampons always leak. I don't wish my life away in general but to no longer be bothered with all this must be a great blessing of getting older.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 31/07/2012 21:22

Tampons leak with me too.

With a 3 and 5 year old, my washing machine is on daily, so I'm Envy at once a week!

MrsBaggins · 31/07/2012 21:24

I have teenagers and I do a load a day . No bloody towels lurking in the wash basket here either ThanksHmm

renlo · 31/07/2012 21:24

I can't say I mind the smell too much just as long as they dont leak, but I do mind the price! Now I only buy Always if they're on offer or use the Aldi ones, just as good, miles cheaper and unscented (not that I care) Smile.

whois · 31/07/2012 21:25

The sented ones are vile Sad

Krumbum · 31/07/2012 21:28

I don't think vaginas are inately disgusting and stinky so scenting them with lemons really is an insult. I won't use always anymore! I use my mooncup but I need a pad too at night on heavy days so need to find a new (equally sticky!) brand. Let's all boycott always for saying we are gross and attempting to give us thrush!

Marne · 31/07/2012 21:28

op, i was going to start the same thread a few weeks ago, has made me very angry that they have given them a horrid smell, i am now buying bodyform. The smell actually makes me gag, it smells of grannies Grin.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 31/07/2012 21:43

Has the "perfume" (a word I use loosely) been recently introduced? As in the past 6 weeks or so?

eurochick · 31/07/2012 21:58

A little longer than 6 weeks I think but shops have been getting rid of old stock so I have sometimes managed to find the unscented ones on sale.

I agree that they smell of grannies. Yeuch.

Latara · 31/07/2012 22:00

My last period was approx 8 weeks ago, first time i noticed the 'perfume' i think.

EverybodysDoeEyed · 31/07/2012 22:02

I think it smells of hair removal cream

That's not really what I aspire to smell like

rainydaysarebad · 31/07/2012 22:05

I always thought blood smells metallicy because of the iron. It tastes metallicy too. (I'm not a vampire).

BertieBotts · 31/07/2012 22:22

Actually I hate the smell of nosebleeds, but menstrual blood does smell different. And for some reason it reacts with disposable pads to smell disgusting.

NarkedRaspberry · 31/07/2012 22:52

Do lillets leak for you? They expand and are much better than tampax.

I agree about the scented towels - and tampons Confused. A) I don't smell when I'm on and B) even if I did, why the feck would I want to smell like I'd hung a Magic Tree from my knickers?

DukeHumfrey · 31/07/2012 22:58

Haven't used Lil-lets other than when "learning" as a teenager, but Tampax Pearl expand widthways and they leak.

highlandbird · 31/07/2012 23:05

Scented tampons Confused why would anyone want to scent the inside of their vaginas??!! I have to use tampons and pads as have a heavy flow and I bought huge big multipacks o always without realising they were scented, they don't seem to have changed the packaging, thats what really pissed me off Angry
Might be a good excuse to give a mooncup a go, have been thinking about it for a while, however, a monocup, that sounds a bit newfangled for me Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 31/07/2012 23:14

Glad I've seen this thread, I rarely use either towels or tampons because I have a coil, so the packs in my bathroom are several years old. However I'm going for prolapse surgery soon and will need to stock up on towels, it never even occurred to me that they might be scented. I am a passionate hater of unnecessary scent and always look for unscented washing powders, body lotions, suncreams, you name it. Manufacturers are you listening?

LordOfThe5Rings · 31/07/2012 23:27

I haven't a real problem with the scented pads. After all, I'm not sitting around smelling them, so what's the bother?

If you have heavy periods, your blood can smell. I have had it smell within 5 minutes tmi I know, just to illustrate the point though.

However, don't know if it's very good for you considering the chemicals that must be added? I have never had any problems but I suppose if you have sensitive skin it might cause rashes?
