surely it is a waste of money. and how does the toddler/6 year old even know or understand their t.shirt.

But elah11 - what if the parents are really into that music? Surely then it's no different to a parent dressing their child in anything else. I'm sure there are people who only do it for the "cool" factor, but I certainly don't. DD genuinely loves the music I play.

I personally can't stand pink frilly shit on little girls - it's just my taste! If she chooses to wear that stuff when she's older then it's up to her. I won't walk down the street with her though

pictish · 30/07/2012 10:23

I knew I'd be fending off protests - and that's grand.
I think what I think though, being musicy myself, and having friends who are all parents and musicy too, and knowing lots of kids in band t-shirts.
In my own experience, I would say it was all for the adults. The kids don't care.

I wouldn't have the cheek to tell any of you what's what. I have no idea.

My world goes beyond the walls of Mumsnet though - and that's what I see.

pictish · 30/07/2012 10:26

Oh and sorry - I was talking to geekcool - but if she's not bothered you are most welcome worry.

I'd happily pass it on. I've held on to it for any random to claim, really. It's a brilliant t-shirt, I'd never bin it.

CouthyMow · 30/07/2012 10:26

My DS1 had a Che Guevara t-shirt when he was 8yo. But he DID understand the message behind it. He's very into politics...

Empusa · 30/07/2012 10:26

"As an asides - do you feel at all that these t-shirts being mass produced by H&M and the like, lessens the impact of them at all? I do"

I do as well. Which is why I'm making DS band shirts out of adult band shirts Grin

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 30/07/2012 10:26

I'd say it's a bit of both pictish in most cases. I'd probably buy them anyway because I like them...but it is a bonus that she clearly loves the music anyway. If she showed no interest in the music, or didn't like it, then I probably wouldn't make her wear them.

I bought my DD a zombie baby-grow when she was 6 months old (Playground of the living dead from Kreepsville 666) - that was purely for me Grin

pictish · 30/07/2012 10:34

I have given the tee to Worry as her son is 4, and it will fit better. Sorry Geek.

Either way - I don't think it's nice to get snotty over other people's clothing choices. I don't like sports gear on little ones at all...but some people do, and that's ok.

To each their own.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/07/2012 10:37

I don't think HM making them lessens the impact. Well I suppose what I means, I am not looking fr an impact so it's a bit irrelevant iyswim.
Unless the band is producing and selling their own tees I can't see the difference.
It's all big business run by people who are in it for the money and they are made by people who can't afford to wear them.
Doesn't matter if they are produced by Phillip Green or Bob Dylan inc. does it?

When I buy them for my kids I think 'that's cute and I love that band'
That is it. No other reason.
I have bought a few Hendrix etc ones from Primark, HM and am just happy they are affordable, made for girls and I don't have to apply to a PO box in the back of NME Grin

pictish · 30/07/2012 10:40

That's totally fair enough. I agree with you. Guilty as charged!

Mamamaiasaura · 30/07/2012 10:43

My ds loves Led zeppelin, pink flloyd, the who etc. he has since about age 5. He is now 12 and an excellent guitarist, with great taste in music. Thank fuck.

Mamamaiasaura · 30/07/2012 10:45

And ds1 educated me on pink flloyd Blush.

Ds2 is 4 and wears star wars tops.. Why? Because he reads their books, watches movies, role plays with star wars Lego. Therefore when he saw yoda top he wanted it, just like the angry birds one

blueemerald · 30/07/2012 11:07

CouthyMow- so your son understand Che was responsible for executing thousands of people without trial, in fact he called a trial an "archaic bourgeois detail"? That he was a serial adulterer and abandoned many of his children? That he, pretty much single handedly, destroyed the Cuban economy? He was also pretty racist (calling black people lazy and indolent) That's quite heavy for an 8 year old.

I repeat I am a liberal myself and despise Conservative/Republican politics but Che did some truly atrocious things (as well as some incredible things!!) You could argue they were justified in the extreme circumstances but no one should pretend they didn't happen.

I will admit to loving babies/kids in rock T shirts hypocrite?

Whenthetoadcamehome · 30/07/2012 11:19

Our 2 yr old has two 'band' tshirts because at 2 I dress him in what I like, as he doesn't give a monkeys! DD, who just turned 7,would move heaven and earth for a Beatles Tshirt like her DBro, and has wanted one since she was about 5. She LOVES them!

Che Guevara you are right about though!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/07/2012 11:29

Without wishing to go off on a tangent too much, I agree with you about Che, that h was deeply flawed and a pretty unpleasant person.
However, he, like Mandela, Malcom X and many other freedom fighters/ terrorist have much to teach us and our DCs about standing up for our beliefs.
In that way I do not think it is totally Inapropriate for a child to wear the image.
In addition, the Che picture has become more of an iconic symbol than an illustration of the wearer's regard for the man iyswim.

Yep, he taught us that you can get away with murdering people if you're on the political left.

An iconic symbol of people fawning over a murderer because he was a left-wing murderer. The man was a monster.

And there we go..
Not much point in even attempting a measured discussion now.

It wa worth a try though.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/07/2012 11:40

DS has 2 band tshirts.

Kiss and Less Than Jake.

I don't don't give a flying monkeys uncle what people think.

Although I did quiz my teenage niece when she bought a rolling stone's tshirt. and no she couldnt name any of their songs... Grin

I'm struggling to see how anyone can stick Mandela and Malcolm X in the same category as Che Guevara. What does 'You can kill anyone you like if you disagree with them' teach children about morality?

I can't see how anyone over 18 can consider a Che T-shirt as anything other than admission of utter prickitude.

treadheavily · 30/07/2012 11:45

My baby has a babygro which says ABCD in ACDC style

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/07/2012 11:47

Nelson Mandela was a member of the ANC, who necklaced people (his wife openly supported this) and Malcolm X was VERY dodgy about women. There are very few people with any sort of power who have clean hands.

Ds and dd both have Che T-shirts - what other souvenir was their Aunt going to be able to get from Cuba?

HenriettaChicken · 30/07/2012 12:28

treadheavily I've seen that - love it!

Does it say 'for those about to walk'? I think that's pretty cute.

stealthpenguin · 30/07/2012 12:45

Are you kidding?! My DS absolutely loves Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, KISS, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Metallica...I could go on for hours!

We've got him Metallica t-shirts and a lovely postbox-red one with "I love really loud guitars" on it - and it's true! He's been to a Metallica tribute gig twice now, and each time he's fallen asleep to the sound of the guitar solos! I think we've got a little rocker on our hands Smile

blueemerald · 30/07/2012 19:37

I totally agree with the point about Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X. They also both did terrible things in the name of their cause. Malcolm X was incredibly and publicly racist until a year before his death! Terrorist and Freedom Fighter are labels that just depend on which side of the gun muzzle fence you're sitting on.

I would just as judgey about a parent putting a child (say under 10) in/allowing a child (again under 13/14) to wear a Nelson Mandela or Black Power shirt.

Love this though.
