surely it is a waste of money. and how does the toddler/6 year old even know or understand their t.shirt.

My 18mo has an AC/DC tshirt.

I think band tees have become more "mainstream" recently, in the sense that they are available to buy "off the rack" at Primark, Topshop etc, rather than actually having to buy them from merch stalls at gigs or via the fan club/online source. I guess this is partially why they are now available for babies/kids and they look cute so no harm done. :)

Although I am a bit bitter that DS looks cooler than me and the only design I have on my tshirt is his snot. Hmm

pinkdelight · 30/07/2012 08:55

Another one here who prefers them to rotten football tops. At least they're cool and usually decent material. Football tops just look nasty on little uns.

slartybartfast · 30/07/2012 09:13

i didnt realise they were so mainstream now. i just thought, they spent a fortune on a toddler's tshirt.
perhaps i am Envy cos i can't do the sme for my teens

but che geuvara? really? Hmm

and yes, some do make the parents look like middle class wankers trying too hard to be cool through their offspring

Why do people care?!

pictish · 30/07/2012 09:27

Listen - I don't mind these band t-shirts on kids...and while I haven't actively bought any of them...I have been passed on a couple and I did like them enough to pop them on my kids.

However, I am smirking just a little bit at those who insist their three year old is a MASSIVE Led Zeppelin fan! Err...no. Come on.

Dh and I are music fans...great big alternative music lovers. Our love of music brought us together in the first place, and our passion for all things musicy and bandy has never abated, even with age. We play a lot of music in here, and our kids have attended festivals and gigs and really, it's a BIG part of our lives together!

However...the kids...as much as I'd like to justify the Ramones t-shirt by claiming my four year old is a Ramones fan - he isn't. I mean he'll bop along good naturedly enough...especially as he sees it makes us smile so much...but really, he bops along to Kylie on the radio as well. And The Singing Kettle. And erm...the number raps by Sid and Andy on Cbeebies.
My kids would prefer a Singing Kettle t-shirt to an AC/DC one any day. If one of them wears an AC/DC t-shirt it's because I have decided it's cool, and have wholly encouraged my child to agree/put it on cos I said so.

It's nothing to do with having a music fan for a child. Much as I'd like to claim different...the t-shirts are for me.

The oh-she-just-loves-Led-Zeppelin argument is a bit wishful thinking and a bit mummy-wants-you-to-be-cool. Sorry.

DoesItComeInBlack · 30/07/2012 09:40

My 2 year old has Che t shirts and a V for vendetta t shirt, in baby pink because my Mum said she needed something in pink. I love them, our friends like them. Those that care don't matter, those that matter don't care Smile

pictish · 30/07/2012 09:47

By the way - I see nothing wrong in dressing your kids to refelct your personaility. We all do that anyway....we choose the kids clothes we like, and are synonymous with our tastes...the band t-shirts are no different. It's not to be taken seriously. I think they look sweet.

You don't have to make out like your kid is a Rolling Stones fan in order to justify the purchase though.

badtasteflump · 30/07/2012 09:52

DD (6) has a Nirvana T Shirt - it's too big (it used to belong to DS) but she loves it. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is her favourite song ever (apparently) and she moshes round the house like a loon whenever she hears it.

So there Smile

badtasteflump · 30/07/2012 09:52

So yes, YABU

pictish · 30/07/2012 09:55

Lol! Ok - I think at 6 it becomes a little more believable maybe...but at 3 nah - they don't care - they just do whatever makes mummy and daddy smile.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 30/07/2012 10:03

How do they cost a fortune? The ones I've got are from H&M and cost a few quid. No more than any other printed t-shirt.

pictish - you're probably right. My DD definitely does show a preference for rock music though....but that's probably because I play it a lot Grin

Well quite! It's the same here, but they still prefer a round of Sleeping Bunnies overall.

As an asides - do you feel at all that these t-shirts being mass produced by H&M and the like, lessens the impact of them at all? I do.

worrywortisntworryinganymore · 30/07/2012 10:09

Pic - you have NEVER met my DD, have you Grin

Her DBro is 13 months older and I had a master plan which basically consisted of her wearing his old clothes until she was about, I dunno, about 10YO.

Seriously, since the child could speak, she's had an opinion on EVERYTHING (I have no clue where she gets this from, but I am thinking it must be her father) and the main opinion is that ALL CLOTHES MUST BE PINK

She also started Spanish classes at a little over 2 (the age limit at the time was 5, but she was toilet trained, so the teacher gave her a try and she has excelled)

Some kids ARE LIKE THAT.

My DS has HFA and has a sensory issues. He has a major facination with red and black, but hates things that feel too tight, so he too has major issues on what he wears.
He also has decided he only likes his star PJs...

Maybe I just have highly strung kids, but they are both very determined about what they wear.

pictish · 30/07/2012 10:10

As another asides - I'd faaaar sooner see a tot in a Che Guevara tee, than a football shirt...but that's just my own personal snobbery taste.
I don't suppose the sentiment is any different though.

modifiedmum · 30/07/2012 10:11

I like how someone's theory was its what the parents like! Well thats not true in my case as I don't like led zeppelin yet archie has always responded to their music (lots of my friends love them, as does my dad which has been on in the car when we've been together) so i thought it was real cute to get him one!

Also another one to wipe out someone else's theory, it's nothing to do with the band being "cool" archie has had metallica, led zep and rolling stones top... i would also be quite happy putting him in a katy perry top as he always stares transfixed and wriggles to her music. Oh and he also has spongebob tops so he likes him, other parents must think im soooooooooooo cool. Grin

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 30/07/2012 10:11

Probably...I just saw them in there and liked them. There is part of me that thinks that mainstream shops selling "alternative stuff" is a bit naff...and I'm sure my early teen self would hit me over the head with something for being so corporate Grin

It's like I really don't like seeing Nirvana t-shirts with the dates of Kurt's birth and death on them...especially on people who quite clearly aren't old enough to remember him alive

GeekCool · 30/07/2012 10:11

My DS likes AC/DC because of IronMan. He hasn't seen the films (he's about to turn 5) but he likes Thunder etc. I've been trying to find him an AC/DC t-shirt but they are hard to locate now

modifiedmum · 30/07/2012 10:12

Deffo wrong pictish. Archie is 3, he def has a preference for rock music!

worrywortisntworryinganymore · 30/07/2012 10:13

Oh, and DS ADORES Kiss and Led Zepplin. Not my choice, prefer barry Manilow personally, but DH is a pretty good musician so that sort of music is pretty prevalent in our house. DS would be able to tell you Queen from Rolling Stones.

There again, my DS could give you a good running commentary about a Pendolino or the Flying Scotsman, or the history of the GWR (Great Western Railway). Or the history of the London Underground.

There isn't just one flavour of child.

pictish · 30/07/2012 10:14

I have a very cool AC/DC t-shirt that would fit a 4 yr old, sitting in the dawer. It's a beaut, plain back with the logo in red on the front - looks like it's been round the block a few times - proper rock n roll. Would it be any good to you?
He could always put a stripey long sleeved tee underneath if it was a little snug?

worrywortisntworryinganymore · 30/07/2012 10:15

Pic... If you mean me (I hope you do) then YES! He would love it. I'll PM you.

elah11 · 30/07/2012 10:17

Yanbu, I think its a bit try hard, the parents are obviously trying to appear 'cool'.
