To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

I don't like tattoos but I don't find myself getting irritated by other people having them.

...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

You failed

squeakytoy · 18/07/2012 12:58

I dont get the need for dates and names either..

It isnt as if you are likely to forget your child's name or birthday.. is it?

I know someone with 5 kids, and 3 ex husbands. Each one has their name on her arm, it is like looking at a class register..

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 18/07/2012 12:59

Same as Worra - dont particularly like them but dont care enough to comment on others having them, each to his own and all that.

Limited - yep, I thought the same thing!

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 12:59

There was a pic on Facebook the other day where some guy had his ex girlfriend's name struck out. It read...

Gina Shit Happens

Anyone remember the thread about help needed for a baby name that had to fit in to an existing crossword of the other DC's names?

Fun.

cuntflapwankbadger · 18/07/2012 13:01

YANBU to be irritated by tattoos, there are some truly awful ones out there as well as the works of art.

I hate tramp stamps and shoulder tattoos of hearts/dolphins/roses. Olde English Script tattoos make me shudder as do "japanese/chinese" script ones.

StuntGirl · 18/07/2012 13:02

YABVU.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:03

I LOVED that crossword thread.

What fit again - something like Mylo iirc.

literally every 2nd or 3rd parent Grin

come on, which was it? every 2nd or 3rd?

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:03

I must say they ruin a nice elegant wedding or bridesmaid dress imo.

squoosh · 18/07/2012 13:03

You can definitely date a tattoo.

Tribal/Chinese - 90s
Dolphins - 90s
David Beckham tattoos - 2000s
Old style sailor tattoos - 2000s

These days I see a lot of men with what I presume are their kids initials on the neck just behind the ear.
A lot of women have their kids names on the underside of their wrist.
A few years ago people were getting their kids names in huge Gothic type font on the under side of their forearm.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:03

TAYO not Mylo.

I've got 6 tattoo's, one is my DD's name with angel wings and i have one on my wrist (as close as I was ever gonna come to having one on my hand!) I do agree the naame thing is getting a bit old now, personally, I'm planning my next tat for when my DD is born and it will be a symbol relating to what her name means, rather than the name thing again, I might get her name underneath.

I do, however, see why the lady with the boob tats took you buy surprise, personally, I think ones there can look awful!! The ones on the hands can look quite cute, depending on what it is! The tribal (which is what Cheryl has) looks tacky now, its been done now!

Personally, my 6 tats have meanings that are very personal to me and the situations I have been in at the time.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:04

I saw a woman a few months ago with a tattoo on her face. A small little pattern about the size of a 50p just under her temple.

LentillyFart · 18/07/2012 13:04

I don't much like tattoos but if people want to go round colouring themselves in and stapling themselves together it's their business I guess. I know all sorts who have them - doesn't make me think of them one way or another so - YABU!

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:04

I love tattoos, i have tattoos, but, I get where the OP is coming from. The kids names inside the wrists, the endless amounts of stars on people who are getting a tattoo for no particular reason but feel they ought to but want a rather non-committal piece...

I've seen some awful pieces on the school run usually situated on the hairline (visible when hair is up) or on the shoulders, or feet/ankles.

As I say I love tattoos, well done, well thought out tattoos but work done by scratchers is bloody awful.

dreamingbohemian · 18/07/2012 13:05

People often get tattoos that are meaningful to them, so I think it's a bit off to be so judgy about them.

Yes, some tattoos are tacky, but so what? Lots of people have tacky style, best to just ignore.

Hayleyh34 · 18/07/2012 13:05

I like the way that you start the thread by saying you don't want to offend and then go on to call people with tattoos chavs.

I'm not sure but I think that you may want to offend Shock

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:06

Worra that's a shame, maybe the bride/bridesmaid like them and don't really give a flying stuff what anyone else thinks

or the ink wasn't dry before they got dressed, is that what you mean?
