To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

Jesus MelsMam that's so kind of you.And who cares what I look like in a nursing home, all my 16 tattoos ( and counting) including a full sleeve. As long as I'm alive that's all I want.

I am not a fan of tattoos.

There used to be a time when you would be considered cool and edgy if you had a tattoo, but now the majority of people from mid teens to late 20's have them, so anyone who has them just looks like a sheep now. In fact, people who don't have them look like individuals now, and the 'cool' ones, because they haven't succumbed to this hideous trend of inking yourself for life.

I have seen some girls look a hot mess (Jemma off celebrity big brother for example,) and some of their tattoos just look like a toddler went crazy with a sharpie. Some people look, from a bit of a distance, like they have a bad rash over their body.

Very, very few people look great with tattoos, whether it's 4 or 5 of them, or dozens of them, and I am certain they will regret it. There are several young females in my extended family aged between 18 and 25 who have between 5 and 10, and they look bloody awful to be honest. Pretty young women who have basically scarred themselves for life.

One of my friends has a daughter who is very pretty, and she has had about 11 or 12 tattoos. Half of them look like one of her mates got a tattoo-kit from ebay and did it when they were all pissed up. Bloody awful. She has ruined her body, yet she thinks she looks great.

And don't even get me started on middle aged women who start plastering their arms with them, or have their kids names tattooed on the cleavage. URGH!

Eveyone knows that house prices fall by 1% for every tatooed person within a 5 mile radius!

How does it work if you're one person with three tattoos? Asking for a friend me.

NotACleverName · 25/08/2017 22:02

God forbid a woman not look pretty, eh userlotsofnumbers. Hmm

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/08/2017 22:13

I have my older two children's names in my boob Shock in my own handwriting ... I feel sad that I don't have dates, am I only half chav now? If so which half? Or maybe I can have the other half due to the MUM tattoo I have in script writing on my wrist! Shock my sisters and I had that done her 50th birthday after she died days before, I'd make some sarcastic quip but meh, fuck you, pull your undies out your arse and stop passing judgement or comment on other people's bodies.

The problem right there is I didn't get them to be cool or edgy.Plus I started getting tattooed at 17.So 27 years ago.So well before the hoo.

You're lumping in the sheep with the genuine lover of tattoos.

I love everything about being tattooed. From deciding what I want.To going to the artist. To the anticipation, the smell of the shop.
The excitement of the needle hitting my skin.Tbe pain of some parts of the body.Tbe excitement of seeing it done.

To me it's a finished product that I want.
Everybody has a vice, mine is being tattooed.

LakieLady · 25/08/2017 22:24

In the drunken, euphoric small hours after the 1997 election, I vowed to get a portrait of Tony Blair tattooed on my arse. Thankfully, I'd sobered up by the time any tattoo parlours were open. My arse has got so much bigger it would look like John Prescott now.

And I'd have needed to add the words "wanted for war crimes" added in 2003.

Just like you have every right to plaster yourself in tattoos - including names written on your cleavage and wrist and wherever - I have just as much right to think they look hideous. No matter how many guilt trips you attempt to throw into the mix.

So no I WON'T stop passing judgement on other peoples bodies.

Everyone does it. Whether they admit it or not.

Even you. And the 'God forbid girls don't look pretty' poster above you.

I don't like tattoos, and I think most people look awful with them. As I said, VERY FEW look good with them. And I despair when I see the amount of pretty girls who have ruined their bodies by having these ghastly blobs of ink plastered all over them.

SchoolShoes · 25/08/2017 22:27

Precisely Lakie, who knows how things will turn out as the years roll by!

NotACleverName · 25/08/2017 22:30

What's that saying about opinions being like arseholes?

I highly doubt that the pretty girls who you think have "ruined" their bodies give a fuck what you think, though.

It's such an utterly pathetic thing to get all cats bum mouth judgey for. Same with piercings. Same with hair colours.

user1497435493 · 25/08/2017 22:33

@NotACleverName

I have no idea what your point is. I'm not even sure YOU know.

But not everyone is going to agree with you.

No matter how much you think everyone should.

Oblomov17 · 25/08/2017 23:14

OhBehave1 stop being so petty please, or picking on my very post. Imho ?

Oblomov17 · 25/08/2017 23:18

tatoos

Some tattoos don't age well.

Plus some tattoo artists are better than others. My brother saved, to have a tattoo done by Darren stares, who is a very recognised skilled tattoo artist in Portsmouth.

But some tattoos aren't done by such skilled people.

Ohbehave1 · 26/08/2017 07:10

Ovlomov17. It wasn't petty. Or picking by on you. Stop being so up yourself.

You make some Grand statement - that is bollocks SmileSmileSmile - and then you get upset that someone points out it is your opinion. .

Now go have another glass of wine and realise that you are just another person that tatood people laugh about. One that has to get upset about something that they don't want, will never get (mentally or physically) and is not actually affected by them in any way.

Oblomov17 · 26/08/2017 07:47

No it wasn't. It wasn't Grand. I'm not up myself.

Some tattoos are well done. Most of them are poor.

Which bit are you arguing about? Hmm

Oblomov17 · 26/08/2017 08:00

Oh behave, I don't actually get upset by tattoos though. They don't bother me. Doesn't stop me sleeping. Mind you, not much does!!

But I was just responding to OP, and every other poster. I thought that was what every other poster did on MN.

Or do you need to write 'in my opinion' on every single sentence you write, now? Hmm

It's a given, that what someone writes is only their opinion.

Are you new? Do you not know this?

WelshMoth · 26/08/2017 15:46

Actually, if you ARE a tattoo artist on this thread, please would you PM me, I wouldn't mind a little advice. I'd need to send a pic but don't wa t ti send it here as the pic I will out me.

AlpacaLypse · 26/08/2017 17:04

I was looking at some old photos that a friend had downloaded to Facebook from when we were all at university back in the 80's. Some of our hair, make up and clothing choices looked amazing. Some of them definitely didn't...Wink The difference is that make up washes off, clothing can be changed, hair cuts and dyes grow out, (most) piercings will grow over if left, but that sheep-like tribal tattoo will still be there. Or worse still you get one that's sooo cool and cutting edge and then every d list celebrity gets a similar one and everyone assumes you've copied them.

PacificDogwod · 26/08/2017 19:07

That is what puts me off every having a tattoo - the permanence of it.
I'm quite happy to have hair in colours that nature never intended, I have no issue with most piercings, I wish I was braver wrt fashion etc.

I've seen too many prison/navy/home-made tattoos on very elderly skin to even want to consider the best and most expertly done one myself.

But I do love seeing a good one. They are quite uncommon IME and I see a lot more of people's anatomy than most people do WinkGrin

Neutrogena · 26/08/2017 21:07

The old adage is that tattoos are for tramps and sailors!

NotACleverName · 26/08/2017 21:10

I'm neither a tramp nor a sailor, so... ¯\(ツ)/¯

JacquesHammer · 26/08/2017 21:18

The old adage is that tattoos are for tramps and sailors

Indeed. And there's a reason why it's an old adage.

PacificDogwod · 26/08/2017 21:28

Yes, that's a well and truly outdated adage.

I do like how what is known here as a 'tramp stamp' is called 'arse antlers' in Germany - much less slut shaming and yet oh so descriptive Grin

NoPressureNoDiamonds · 26/08/2017 21:46

I had my dds initial on my wrist at the end of my mat leave. So she's always there... Sort of...
My SIL has a hideous one (imo) of her kids names. Doesn't annoy me though - her skin.

whirlygirly · 26/08/2017 22:25

I love the look of tattoos on tanned or darker skin. The contrast of black ink and pasty white skin looks bloody awful (to me), not sure why but it does.

There are some shockingly bad tattoos around. A girl on hols had a large cupcake tattoo covering each foot which looked like an 8 yr old had drawn on in felt tip. I just kept thinking that she's stuck with that for life and it's shit.
