To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

YABU.

OP, why do you feel the need to say you saw this woman in a fairly good area of the city?

Are tattooed people not allowed in certain areas?

DP and I are big metal fans so at the gigs we go to we see the really 'troubled' adults that go in for the multiple piercings, both arms with full sleeve tattoos, half shaved heads on the girls, you know the look. 9/10 in that scene they look absolutely amazing the tattoos go with the image and are well done and well thought out. However, there are a significant minority done by scratchers.

DP and I stick out like sore thumbs at gigs tho because we really don't go in for the image, we couldn't be any more middle England in appearance if we tried :o so I do try not to don the judgey pants at other peoples lifestyle choices because they may very well start doing it at you (that or you get paranoia thinking they are all judging you!) but I still don't like Star tattoos and cupcakes. That will remain unchanged. Just so you know.

cuntflapwankbadger · 18/07/2012 13:26

I don't get tattoos where you can't see them, as in, on your back/back of your neck etc etc.

I am ALLOWED an opinion on this as I have a tattoo. So ner.

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:27

Amy Winehouses tats looked awful to me

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:27

i've now got that song running through my head

''oooh yeah, i'm just a lol machine"

LimburgseVlaai · 18/07/2012 13:27

Couple of things always puzzle me about tattoos:

Why do people tend to use those dull dark blue colours? Why not go for reds and yellows and greens? Are the brighter colours considered bad taste? Is there some kind of etiquette?

And how much does a tattoo cost? When I see someone covered in tats, am I right in thinking "There goes a couple of hundred quid [that could have been spent on something useful instead]"?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/07/2012 13:30

Invisible tattoos.

cuntflapwankbadger · 18/07/2012 13:30

A good tattoo from a good artist costs £xxx usually.

I think darker ink lasts better or summat.

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:30

limburgseVlaai my large piece cost me £160 for nearly 3 hours work (was £60 per hour). Tattoos aren't cheap which is why it can be galling to see someone who claims to be broke or on benefits covered in them.

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:31

Oh and my large piece has a lot of pink's purples and yellows in it as well as a bit of green and white, the only black is the outline.

dreamingbohemian · 18/07/2012 13:31

Well I paid for my tats with beer, so can't help you there Smile

cheesesarnie · 18/07/2012 13:32

I don't like tattoos but couldn't care less if other people have them.
If some one pinned me down and tattood me,then I'd have a right to be 'irritated'.

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:32

unless the tattoo reads 'this cost me £4 million pounds of government grants that was meant to feed my DCs and family for 76 years' it's none of your fucking business Limburgs

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/07/2012 13:33

My tattoo cost £60 per hour and took 15 hours. Mine has blues and pinks as well as black in it.

I don't care if people think it looks chavvy, no one can see it in the uniform I wear for work (I'm a dentist) and it's my business what I look like in my free time.

GenericNameChange · 18/07/2012 13:34

If tattoos offend you, don't have one.

There are plenty of things people have or do that I don't like and wouldn't personally do but I keep my gob shut because it's their life and they can do what they want.

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:34

you're right, sorry those that think people on benefits shouldn't have tattoos

the minute they claim anything they should have them lasered off Hmm

redrubyshoes · 18/07/2012 13:34

If you have a tattoo of three stars does it mean you can live for three months in a freezer?

ZombieBelle · 18/07/2012 13:35

I have tattoos and am definatly not a chav. All of mine are quite geeky actually, and perhaps the geekiest is booked for this friday. I must admit I do judge some tattoos as tacky but again that is the person who owns the tattoos own choice, if they love it, then who the hells gives a damn? It has no bearing on your own life.

Limburgs - my tattoos cost from £40 to £100. the average tattoo costs about £60 an hour. I have 3 black tattoos and 1 brightly coloured one. There is no stigma afaik about bright tattoos :)

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:37

redruby Grin Grin

Vicky2011 · 18/07/2012 13:37

I am alone in finding the idea of getting a tattoo appealing merely because they appear to annoy people do much?

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:37

You know that's not what I meant unchartered

They are expensive, at £60 an hour that's one lot of JSA near enough for one hours work. It's not an essential necessity to get through life and if people can afford to get inked with a substantial piece of work by a good artist whilst on JSA it does make me get a bit judgey.

TwoIfBySea · 18/07/2012 13:38

My cousin had a whole bunch of tattoos done when she was going through her rebellious age.

Couldn't help giggle when, on her wedding day, everyone could see the big yellow duck on her shoulder as it peeked over the back of the dress. It was like a malevolent sprite!

FarloRigel · 18/07/2012 13:38

YABU. Especially about the kids names. Some folks I know with their kids names tattooed on lost those children to cancer and have their names tattoed on as a memorial so don't be so damn quick to judge.

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:38

:o @ ruby i wondered if they had been approved by the AA for a good night...

squoosh · 18/07/2012 13:39

Zombie what makes your tattoos geeky? I like when tattoos are way leftfield, those are the interesting ones.

If I ever see another Winnie the Pooh tattoo however!
