To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

I have stylised tribal dolphin on the back of my shoulder which incorporates my 29 month old son's initial...am I going to get thrown off MN now?

Am also trying to come up with a design for when baby number 2 arrives.

electricalbanana · 18/07/2012 13:40

if you have a tattoo for fuck's sake make sure it is grammatically correct

i know a girl who has tried too hard and just had a tattoo with

Time heal's all

oh dear

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 18/07/2012 13:41

As I read once on a poster in the tattoo shop window
"The only difference between a tattooed person and a non tattooed person is that a tattooed person doesn't care if you aren't"
I have seen a couple with spelling and/or grammar mistakes recently though, and they do make me cringe.
I on the other hand have Tennyson tattooed on me, and every single dotted i, crossed t, and punctuation mark is perfect. I simply threatened to castrate the tattooist with a rusty spoon if it wasn't, and checked the transfer obsessively before he started.

blondie80 · 18/07/2012 13:41

My local tattooist charges £80 per hour, but then again it takes 5 years to qualify to be a tattooist, longer than most trades getting paid that amount.

ZombieBelle · 18/07/2012 13:42

lets see, i have JRR tolkiens signature (black)
the white tree of gondor
deathly hallows

and on friday im getting the Star Trek insignia :D

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:43

it's still none of your business on how a person chooses to spend money that they are entitled to, it might not be your choice, but that is the choice that person has made. their decision

ever thought perhaps they were gifted the cash? had a windfall? aren't actually on benefits at all?

ShushBaby · 18/07/2012 13:43

I have got two chinese symbols which totally date me as a child (well, youth) of the 90s.

I don't give a stuff- I like them. And yes they do mean something to me, and I'd like to say an elegant 'up yours' to anyone who has a problem with that! Everyone has things which mean something to them, whether that be an object, a picture, a tattoo..

No more attention seeking than wearing make-up, jewellery, decorative clothes. And certainly not passive-aggressive- how absurd!

Oh and I'm totally middle-clarse, OP, as are loads of people who have tattoos. They are one of life's great levellers .

kerala · 18/07/2012 13:46

YANBU and entitled to your opinion. Personally think all tattoos look utterly awful. What I find funny is that often people with tattoos think they are being really out there and wild when in fact now it seems the majority of people seem to have them.

lolaflores · 18/07/2012 13:48

A surprising amount of tats at DD's school. Many on the foot. None of them inspiring or artistic. Could of got them out of a Bazooka Joe wrapper in most cases.
friends daughter has a fuck off huge rose on her shoulder, which she did not order but what you going to do. Looks like a docker with it

SusanneLinder · 18/07/2012 13:49

I couldnt give a stuff how people want to decorate their body as long as I aint paying for it.

I have more in life to get my knickers in a twist about than that

MrsKwazii · 18/07/2012 13:49

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I think this tattoo is both gross and genius at the same time: news.bmezine.com/2007/05/08/cat-ass-navel-tattoo/ Grin

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:50

Seriously, unknot your knickers unchartered you're getting het up over an opinion being voiced. I know several people who have been on JSA and got themselves up to their eyeballs in debt because they've tried to sustain a lifestyle far and beyond their means which includes spending on tattoos, piercings, designer clothing etc.

I've been on IS and JSA before and I know how close you have to cut your cloth to get bills paid, kids fed, house in order, medical appointments attended.

It DOES make me get judgey because either they are working cash in hand, getting themselves un-neccesarily into debt or just prioritising things wrongly. I'm not saying people can't have 'nice' things and treat themselves on benefits, far from it, I just find it puzzling how someone on benefits can afford to spend £60 an hour on something as mundane and non-important as a tattoo.

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:51

but that is about that individual, not about tattoos

amandine07 · 18/07/2012 13:53

Here here to grammatically correct tattoos!

Also, beware of those in another language that you do not fully understand...

"Tramp Stamps"!! Grin

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:55

that'll be 'hear hear' then, amandine Grin

badtasteflump · 18/07/2012 13:57

Somebody (male) I knew years ago had a huge face of Elvis tattooed on their chest. It looked exactly like Bob Monkhouse Grin

numbertaker · 18/07/2012 13:58

I personally dont like tatoos. I think they look awful when you see celebs dressed up really glamerous and expensively and then they have a blue tatoo round thier ankles or up thier arm.

Sorry its grim.

Stonefield · 18/07/2012 13:58

I love tattoos, both myself and my OH have tatts, including our baby boy's name and birth date and no it's not in case I forget, it's a celebration. It's not there for anyone else but me. It's not to attract attention or anything like that.
YABU

I don't understand why people judge others just because they have tattoos. You don't have to like them but what gives you the right to judge?

cheesesarnie · 18/07/2012 14:00

Amindine Grin sorry but I just spat my tea out!

KellyElly · 18/07/2012 14:01

All the ones you've described have been common for years now - a good ten years at least. Where have you been all this time Grin

squoosh · 18/07/2012 14:02

Sanskrit was a big hit for a while wasn't it? Was always a bit bemused by that. Think that was down to David Beckham too.

droves · 18/07/2012 14:03

Dh has 10 tattoos.
Rangers FC over his heart
My name down one forearm ( inside ) his name matching other arm . (( was done as a wedding surprise FFs )).

5 stars with each of his dc names inside
Huge black tribal star thingy on his upper arm/ shoulder
Multi coulored rampant lion made up of dots on his other upper arm .

He looks dirty ...and not in a good way . I miss my perfect skinned man Sad , he used to be so sexy ...it's a turn off . I would not have went out with him if I knew he was going to get inked so much. He had none when we met .

I think he was deprived of colouring in books and pens when he was a child or something.

He mentioned getting his calfs done

numbertaker · 18/07/2012 14:04

I once saw a lady who had full portraits of both her toddler sons, one on each calf, wow she looked great in shorts.

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 14:04

droves Is he going to get his Rangers tattoo relegated to somewhere near his ankle?

That's sad you don't fancy him in the same way any more. I'd feel the same :(

badtasteflump · 18/07/2012 14:05

I've never knowingly shagged a man with tattoos
