To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

Yellow he looks fantastic fully clothed ...just since the tats it's lights out at bedtime .Sad

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/07/2012 14:07

I love my tattoo's. They represent certain points in my life and are special to me.

I couldn't give a fig what anyone else thinks of them, and do not deem myself to be common enough to judge on how someone else chooses to adorn their body.

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 14:08

Oh droves :( That makes me feel bad for you. did he ask you about them before he got them? It seems like the kind of thing you ought to involve a partner in.

droves I posted before I read your bits - sorry Blush

Shullbit · 18/07/2012 14:18

I have my boys names on my wrists. I used to self harm, and I was asked to go along with a friend and get one done with her. I didn't want anything huge, just something small and personal so I got their names on the inside of my wrists so if ever I get tempted to self harm again, I would see their names and wouldn't want to cut through them. It works for me as a quick, sharp reality check, and I don't give two hoots what anyone else thinks.

And no need to get judgy, as it was paid from wages and not benefits. And was only £35 and took all of 25 minutes. Children were still fed, and bills were still paid.

numbertaker · 18/07/2012 14:18

@squoosh. Grim. It reminds me of those bad, cheap portraits of z list stars you can buy.

My friend has a tatt and she got it done when she wa 18 and 8 stone; now she is older (lots) and 18 stone, it looks grim and faded.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 14:20

Aww droves.

I must admit though that Multi coulored rampant lion made up of dots on his other upper arm made me laugh.

festivalwidow · 18/07/2012 14:23

I love the scene in the Wire where one of the middle-school kids is contemplating getting a tattoo.
"It's gonna be a sketch of me and it's gonna go right down my arm like this"
"What, in case you forget what you look like?"

Longdistance · 18/07/2012 14:25

I like to play, spot the person who doesn't have a tattoo.

Usually it's me Confused

I'm not keen either, but each to their own. Here in Oz it's common for people to have the Aussie stars tattoo'd on their legs (well, that's where I've seen them so far), and I've seen a fair few with Ned Kelly tattoo'd on them, like he's some hero Angry

droves · 18/07/2012 14:26

No he didn't ask me , but it would have been nice if he'd even TOLD me if he was getting them done. He sneaks off after work ..I'm wondering where he is ...until he comes back with a cling film bandage .

Don't get me wrong , I like tattoos in moderation . If they are nice .

DH's are a bit pick and mix , black , coloured, tribal, shitey stary shite ( names are squint , plus a bit "girly" so looks stupid on his big muscley arms) , dotty (wtf ?, have been tempted to attack him in his sleep with the dt felt tips and block the colour in so it doesn't look as shite ). My name is so big it could probably be seen from space or something...( ok , well, you can read it far away across a large room , it's horrid ...and I don't even like my name was going to deed poll change , now I can't ) .

I just don't like climbing into bed with a human colouring in book .

amandine07 · 18/07/2012 14:27

ha ha yes indeed UnChartered!!

That'll teach me not to make grammatical mistakes while reminding others to watch out for them!! Grin

GobblersKnob · 18/07/2012 14:28

I find myself increasingly irritated with people who don't have tattoos, acres and acres of pasty flesh, why not break it up with a bit of colour eh? Boring fuckers Wink

droves · 18/07/2012 14:30

However , DSIL has a very nice one on her shoulder . It's a little rose and it just looks right . beautiful detailed artwork .

Sdd has 2 , she's got tiny stars at her hairline behind her ear , it's cute .
And tiny writing , her dh's name on her tummy , also nicely done

Longdistance · 18/07/2012 14:31

I quite like my olive easily tanned skin thank you Wink

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 14:31

I like my acres of pasty skin. Skin is lovely, I don't see any need to make it look different.

droves · 18/07/2012 14:32

droves no wonder he doesn't tell you, id do the same in his situation.

I have 5 tattoos, a 'tramp stamp' which was my first and I still love it. I have 7 stars done my spine one for each member of my family, (it means a lot to me) and yes I can't see it but I don't need to, I have the word freedom in Chinese on my wrist, which I got after I left a very abusive relationship aged 20. And I have heart on my belly and stars on my ankle.

I don't think all tattoos look great, but just cause its not my taste.

But honestly I no everyone has an opinion but some people should be ashamed..

My tattoos mean a lot to me and I didnt get them to be showy or in people's face if that's what a few narrow minded people think then they need to wise up. I got mine for me, it was what I wanted and I'd never be ashamed of my choice.

So for all those Judgy people, should maybe think twice when they see someones 'chavy' tattoo because you might not get the meaning from just looking at it.

amandine07 · 18/07/2012 14:40

Does anyone remember that teenage girl, think she was from Belgium, a couple of years back...she ended up with a shitload of stars tattooed across one side of her face, then claimed she'd fallen asleep after asking for 1 then woke up to about a dozen!!

Not sure how she explained that one to the parents...!

cuntflapwankbadger · 18/07/2012 14:42

Hmm...seems odd people getting all high horsey over people's "judgeyness" over tattoos, when they themselves are being judgemental of those who choose not to like tattoos of a certain nature.

I don't agree with the benefits bashing and "chav" stuff on this thread but it's ok to discuss tattoos you don't like fgs!

cuntflapwankbadger · 18/07/2012 14:44

My ex has a whole host of MINGING tattoos he's well proud of. I do have a giggle to myself when there's a new one posted to facebook. He's a big fan of gothic script sayings "carpe diem" etc which is even funnier when his mates post below it saying "I have that one!"

squoosh · 18/07/2012 14:45

Oh yes the girl with the stars on her face! Did she not think she was getting a temporary henna tattoo?

Rachel130690 · 18/07/2012 14:47

I agree with cuntflapwankbadger, not everyone has same taste and it's great for people to express that, but it's the same with all these threads some people take it too far.

It's great everyone liking different things but to call someone's tattoo chavy is just rude.
