To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

that might have been me

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:15

That's one beer you'll never see again Shock

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:15

I hate it when it is used as punctuation 'I was feeling a bit tired today ol so decided to go back to bed lol' accompanied by millions of these fuckers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But saying 'lol at mary' or whatever - loads people on mumsnet do that.

badtasteflump · 18/07/2012 13:15

I hate tattoos. But I don't let them irritate me so YABU. I just snigger to myself, snobbishly, when I see them Smile

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:15

My responsibility in brushtroke Grin

OlympicTorch · 18/07/2012 13:16

LOL at that baby name thread Grin

ithastobe, 6 tattoos and NAICEham? That's a bit of a juxtaposition.

squoosh · 18/07/2012 13:17

My fave was on a man's arm and went something like 'Love you Mum, from the only man who'll never break your heart'. Twas in a heart too.

I might have got the wording slightly wrong but you get the jist. I think the dash of Oedipal love really added something.

becstarsky · 18/07/2012 13:17

Oh I'm so torn.... I do find tattoos ugly - to me they just look like wounds or scars. I don't like my scars - wish I had a bit less scar tissue tbh, so that's probably my ishoos! I don't like the way that tattoos are now ubiquitous.

But then you said 'chav' in a 'I'm not really saying 'chav' 'cept I am' way... And I find the use of the word chav uglier than someone with a tattoo.

Dammit. I have nowhere to go on this one. YMBU (you might be unreasonable - is that new?)

nothingoldcanstay · 18/07/2012 13:17

I really dislike them.

Passive aggressive attention seeking.

Saying "look at me" but without the observer being able to comment honestly (because you can't offend someone because it's "special" to them).

BupcakesandCunting · 18/07/2012 13:18

Am currently weeping my way through the babba name crossword tattoo thread. Ha ha ha I bet Tom O' Connor never saw crosswords taking this kind of turn.

LOL!!!!

limitedperiodonly · 18/07/2012 13:18

That Gary Lineker's wife has got what looks like a shopping list tattoed up the side of her breast.

I'd definitely post here if I found that in my trolley GOML.

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:19

yup, my star lily tattoo is very PA

it's a worthy distraction as i stick it out to trip up noisy fuckers who get off the bus before me Grin

RichTeas · 18/07/2012 13:19

One thing which is hard to understand if why they haven't come up with a light coloured (white) tattoo ink for very dark skinned people. You see some dark people with the standard blue tattoos, and they really don't look good. They are often unreadable against dark skin, it's a wonder why the wearer even bothers to get inked. You see pictures of tribal people wearing white war paint and it looks so striking, surely the tattoo industry can come up with something similar.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:19

Tom O'Connor. Grin

Danielle L have been better off spending that tattoo money on some invisalign bitch

badtasteflump · 18/07/2012 13:20

AIBU to assume whenever I see a man with his DCs names tattooed on him, that he needs the reminder because he probably hasn't seen them since conception?

Grin
paradisechick · 18/07/2012 13:20

Passive aggressive attention seeking? You get all that from some ink on someone?

squoosh · 18/07/2012 13:21

RichTeas yes you're right, I wonder why that is. Tattoos do tend to show up better on white skin as you get more of a contrast.

A white tatto on black skin would look quite striking though.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:21

I don't understand if you want a tattoo of something 'meaningful', why would you have it on the back of your neck (a la Katona) where you can never see it.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:22

That said, I think Amy Winehouse's tattoos really suited her, she was covered in them bless her.

Better a load of sailor jerry type tattoos than 'tasteful' stars and flowers and shopping lists.

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 13:22

I don't like them, and I do eye-roll a bit when someone says it "means" something to them, but I think that about everything. I'm not really into conveying meaning through stuff.

Not that I convey meaning in any other way.

I'd find it hard to fancy a man with tattoos.

But I don't get annoyed by them, cos that would be a bit silly like getting annoyed with hair or shoes.

"My fave was on a man's arm and went something like 'Love you Mum, from the only man who'll never break your heart'. Twas in a heart too"

Actually laughing here.LOLLING like a motherfucking LOL machine.

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 13:23

squoosh actually, thinking about it, tattoos on black skin I think look lovely. Maybe because they're more subtle, but I know a guy who is mixed race, but fairly dark skinned and his tattoo (only black ink) looks lovely.

Falandfree · 18/07/2012 13:23

exactly what I always think badtasteflump, and then I tell myself off for being judgmental.... but I can't help it!!! Is it a generational thing?

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 13:25

Yes, GetOrf Amy Winehouse's really suited her too, you're right.
