To be getting increasingly irritated by tattoos?

I apologise in advance if I offend anyone with tattoos....Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-tattoo and I believe anyone who wants one should go right ahead but on the other hand there seems to have recently been a HUGE increase in the (imo) rather tackier end of the tattoo styles: kids' names and/or dates, side-of-the-wrist patterns (a la Cheryl Cole), three 3 black stars on the back of the neck,etc,etc...

I saw a woman the other day in fairly good area of a city with - I kid you not - one child's name and what I presume to be their respective dates of birth on her boobs - one name/date per boob right above the bra cup level!
On holiday recently the pool/beach/sunlounger areas were awash with names/dates of birth, etc on display everywhere and literally every 2nd or 3rd parent in the playground is sporting one and/or one of the aforementioned examples above and I cant help but feel they are becoming common and/or tacky ...(trying to avoid using the chav word)

Some look nice.
Some look hideous.
Some make me think "WTF were you thinking when you had that done?"

I don't like excessive quantities of tattoos (although my hairdresser used to have lots of plain black ones making up a pattern. He was black and they looked fabulous.)

But [shrug] Each to their own. I do wonder whether they all end up smudgy and blurred after time though.

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:07

The thing is, everyone's tats have meanings but it doesn't necessarily mean they don't become tacky or old hat.

The most common tats at the moment seem to be stars...all have meaning it would seem but still very common.

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:07

the one on my foot is gawjusss Soup Wink

Ephiny · 18/07/2012 13:07

People can do what they want to their own bodies, but I don't like the look of tattoos and would never have one myself.

The names/dates on boobs sounds awful Shock

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:08

That Gary Lineker's wife has got what looks like a shopping list tattoed up the side of her breast.

squoosh · 18/07/2012 13:08

1 in 100 tattos looks good*

*not actual statistic but close enough.

SoupDragon · 18/07/2012 13:08

I do agree the naame thing is getting a bit old now, personally, I'm planning my next tat for when my DD is born and it will be a symbol relating to what her name means, rather than the name thing again, I might get her name underneath

Lol - isn't having her name underneath a symbol just, you know, the same as having her name there? :)

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:09

No Uncharted I mean what I said Lol

paradisechick · 18/07/2012 13:09

I love tattoos but don't like names or hand ones.

CanISawItOff · 18/07/2012 13:09

Seriously. Please. STOP with the star tattoos. Be they 5 point stars or the nautical compass stars or little flurries of stars in a starburst pattern interlinked with butterflies to cover your stretchmarks or a giant star on the nape of your neck or a star that resembles a second bumhole...just STOP IT!

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:09

shopping list tattoo with obligatory Daily mail picture of Kate Middleton.

kissyfur · 18/07/2012 13:09

Oh for goodness sake, it's their body and they can do what they like with it. Live and let live

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:10

So o have them on my feet instead and I'm very proud of that.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 18/07/2012 13:11

Years ago I worked with a thick girl who had 5 star tattoos from her belly button working their way down to her public bone. Each of the stars spelled out the name of her boyfriend C O L E Y.

It made me laugh.

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:11

Oh yes I'm a Loller....out and proud as always! Grin

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 13:12

I saw a woman yesterday with a half sleeve on her lower arm and hand. It looked like it needed colouring in, as it seemed to just be a random pattern that started on the back of her hand, and carried on all around up to her elbow.

Got to say it looked ridiculous, as she was in her 60's and looked very "sensibly" dressed.. flat clarkes sandals, mid calf elasticated skirt, flowery blouse.. grey hair..

At least with piercings, you can take them out when you get to an age where you start to look a bit "desperate" to cling on to your yoof! Wink

And yes, I have a couple of tattoos myself, so certainly not anti-tattoo, but I can cover mine up very easily.

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2012 13:13

I've been Lolling on the interweb for around 17 years

I'm not stopping now

YABU. I wouldn't personally do it but getting irritated by it is beyond me.
I've wanted a tattoo for 13 years, but I can't decide on anything to have, so I probably won't.

BupcakesandCunting · 18/07/2012 13:14

I have three tattoos and...

I agree with OP.

I saw the BEST one EVER in Worcester the other day. Some meathead had at the top of his arm an etching of his kid with the legend "MY RESPONSIBILITY" scrawled underneath in brushstroke. DH and I were trying to catch up with him to have a better look but then he veered off and went into Iceland. It was the best tattoo ever. The kid looked really pissed off to be on his arm as well.
