BASTARD Mirena

AIBU to suggest that the people behind the Mirena coil change its name to "BASTARD Mirena"; and that GPs are required to use its full name (or "BASTARD" for short) when hard-selling it to their innocent, trusting patients?

For example: "Oh yes, I've never encountered anyone who didn't get on with the BASTARD Mirena. In fact, research has shown that women who opt for the BASTARD are nicer, happier, 93% more likely to win the lottery and can shit cakes."

Finally, AIBU to think that GPs should need a license to hard-sell the BASTARD Mirena, and in order to GET a license they must be fitted with a Mirena themselves for at least a week. Up the arse. Sideways.

Trying to work out if this is appropriate, but wonder if MN would consider this thread for classics? Or is that not necessary as it's not chat? Nomination for both entertainment and educative purposes. Thanks ladies, sorry for your pain while appreciating your candour (metaphorically stroking recent copper coil).

MrsDoomsPatterson · 30/08/2013 20:45

On my second, seven years in It's great for me, debilitatingly heavy period before. Sorry to those who have suffered. I've lost two stone (twice!) while it's been in too, (not sure I can blame the Mirena really but it came off easily with effort, I'm in my 40s now so it could well be middle age spread.)

merrymonsters · 30/08/2013 20:58

These sorts of threads put me off having a coil for years, but once I was too old for the Pill I got one. It's been great. I don't have periods and I don't have to think about it. No mood swings and no weight gain.

I wish I'd had one years ago. It doesn't affect everyone badly.

DavenotChas · 30/08/2013 21:07

Mirena is more than a bastard. It's a fucking bastard. After weeks of bleeding my body realised the bastardly bastardness of the bastardly thing. So it expelled the bastard thing. Guess what? Then I bled some more. Never again, bastard.

DavenotChas · 30/08/2013 21:08

P.S. and I got fat. That is all-

jumpingpillows · 30/08/2013 21:12

My GP told me I would end up dead if I didn't go on the mirena or have the implant...I still refuse.

I would rather die.

jumpingpillows · 30/08/2013 21:13

My GP told me not to believe all I read on the internet. OK. I will only believe 50% of it...the mirena is still a bastard.

Writerwannabe83 · 30/08/2013 21:20

I loved my Mirena Smile

My GP was a bit reluctant at first to give me one as I haven't had children (apparently insertion can be very difficult in those circumstances) but due to other health issues I have it was the only option.

But I got on with it famously - my periods near enough disappeared and it was marvellous.

I had it for 3.5 years before having it removed for TTC purposed and I fell pregnant 6 weeks later. I will definitely be having another one put in once baby is born Smile

mrstigs · 30/08/2013 21:37

I haven't had a BASTARD, but my doctor suggested it. I even went for the swabs beforehand. Then I decided to talk to some friends I knew had experience with them. One said it was great after the first few months, one got pregnant with it in and had to have surgery as it wandered up her body somewhere, and one person thought it was fine until she got awful cramps and smelly discharge for a few days then it just fell out. Shock
I know the plural of anecdote isn't data but that little chat put me right off!

2rebecca · 30/08/2013 21:40

My Mirena was great, no side efects, infrequent light periods, no tabs to take. Only had it removed when my husband had a vasectomy. then wished I hadn't as i got my periods back again. GPs don't recommend it out of nastiness!

my2centsis · 30/08/2013 21:40

Hmm seem I might get flames for this....
But think YABU and over the top. Love my Merina, has stopped my very severe endometriosis from growing, I no longer am in seething pain everyday, don't have to worry about getting pregnant and I now only get sporting for a couple of days a month. Sorry you had such a bad experience

misskatamari · 30/08/2013 21:45

I haven't had "the bastard" but I took cerazette pill about 7 years ago which I believe is the same hormones and it was awful! Was so depressed and anxious and had panic attacks etc. when I went to get a copper cool fitted at the family planning clinic (as there was no way I was going near hormones again) the lady told me in a hush hush way that they had lots of people having the same problems but it wasn't something that was really mentioned when prescribing it. I really think more info and support should be given to women who hopes hormonal contraceptives as they can totally mess with your body and it can often take a while for you to realise that something isn't right and what is causing it.

MutantAndProud · 30/08/2013 21:47

I love my Mirena. Have had 2 and its given me my life back. No horrendously painful periods that make me vom.

And I'm a GP. GPs don't get commission for Mirena's. they are the most effective contraceptive (better success rates than female sterilisation), that's why we offer them.

neunundneunzigluftballons · 30/08/2013 21:49

Ah the mirena it is close to Godliness when discussing contraception with my gynaecologist after ds I told her not to worry DH had the snip. She said I give you a year and you will be back looking for the Mirena WTF.

misskatamari · 30/08/2013 21:51

I'm sure they are a great option for some people, however I don't think enough information is giving to people about what the side effects might be and as others have said many are downplayed. I honestly was almost suicidal when I was on the pill as I just could not cope with how awful I felt.

I was pretty happy with the copper coil although it wasn't perfect - it was a much better option than taking hormones again.

HalfAPeaOneCrumbAndADropOfGin · 30/08/2013 21:52

I had my Bastard out a month ago after the moody / hairy / weightgain thing (am yet to become floaty-happy and thin). A week after that i had the Bastard Crash! I went numb, shakes, achey neck, couldn't swallow and sweated lots! - for two days. I honestly told DH to take me to A&E as i thought i was having a stroke!

Then i realised what it was - a big comedown of the hormones that had been in me for the last few years ... never again.

lougle · 30/08/2013 21:54

I had to have instillagel and TNT spray to have mine fitted - after 3 births as well Blush Apparently I had cervical shock. I don't blame my cervix...

Therealamandaclarke · 30/08/2013 21:58

What I really don't understand is how the BASTARD talked its way in. Hmm

I pitched up at FP clinic, asking for a nice, shiny copper coil and the Doctor started banging on about the Mirena. How it was a godsend for women with heavy bleeding. I told her I've never had a problem with that and that I'd had one before but had it removed because I'd felt moody and gained weight. She was undeterred, and keen to convince me that those symptoms were not related to the Mirena and that the mine was gat and I should have one. So I gave in.
And have regretted it since about 3 as after it was put in.

However, I know some ppl love the BASTARD.
And I've had a laugh at the word "foof" so I guess it was worth the last few murderously shit weeks for that.

Revengeofkarma · 30/08/2013 22:03

I'm on my third. Two before DD, for total of nearly eight years. Loved it. Freaking loved it. Solved my hormone problems (it was actually my endocrinologist who recommended it) and No Periods after initial spotting for a month. When I had it out to TTC, it was a real shocker to get my period every month. You forget how often that is after a decade without!

No brainer to get one after the birth (well about six months after the birth). No bleeding for a couple months, then lots of bleeding so medical work up. Coil fine, just hormones after weaning, etc and it will settle down. It is and is slowly getting better, but I will be glad when they stop again!

Therealamandaclarke · 30/08/2013 22:13

And another thing.......
I've worked really hard to lose weight after DC2, had just started to feel really good and I can already feel the weight going back on.
Fucking BASTARD (TM)

sweetkitty · 30/08/2013 22:27

My GP is always going on about me getting a BASTARD fitted.

I'm 38, have had 4DCs, have had migraines since I was 6 but apparently I'm a stroke risk and could have stroke like next week as I'm on the Pill. I'm on the pill for heavy periods so even DP getting snipped wont help. HmmHmmHmmHmm

misskatamari · 30/08/2013 22:48

For anyone suffering with the bastard or its after effects I found taking a good vitamin B complex really helped after I was screwed up on hormones.

Also mefanamic acid from the docs is great for heavy painful periods - without nasty hormones.

Therealamandaclarke · 31/08/2013 07:39

sweetkitty you sound like the perfect candidate for Mirena tbf.
Lots of women really DO describe it as a Godsend for heavy periods. I have a couple of friends who love their mirenas for the life it has given them after heavy periods and it seems that most women don't have problems with it Envy
Besides, even I,in my aggravated, hormonal state know I would rather be as I am now than have a stroke.
In your position I'd have one. It's not permanent.

banana87 · 31/08/2013 08:59

I loved the BASTARD. We just broke up though and I kicked it out. Time for another bean to take its place Wink

kalidasa · 31/08/2013 12:57

I can't do hormones so have a copper coil. It was a bit of a struggle to get it fitted as evidently they are out of fashion, I had to go to a specialist family planning place (Margaret Pyke in London - HUGELY recommended for any of you anywhere nearby, I was very impressed, and I think for fitting coils it is a good idea to get someone who does that all the time). I really like it. My periods are slightly longer and heavier but my previously very bad period pain is actually a bit better.

Very funny thread but sorry to hear so many bad experiences.
