Goodness again, I clearly did word this wrongly - I'm not sitting cheering him to lose as such, would just prefer Ferrer to win. Blimey!

He's a sportsman, not a bloody film star. And, for what it's worth, if any of my kids ever do as well in a sport as he has I know for sure that I'd be proud (maybe even smug) too, especially coming from a country not known for its sporting prowess.

And you did type "cheering for him to loose (sic)". Backtrack much?

a set down and I'm beaming...

Right. So now you're not beaming no? Biscuit

Nervousfirsttimer · 04/07/2012 16:57

Don't worry happy, I'm with ya! And Ladysybil - he is from another country too! He refers to himself as Scottish, not British so why should I give a flying Fook if he wins or not?

LST · 04/07/2012 16:58

happy I don't want him to win either. He seems like a cock.

And as for the flaming over the spellings? I find it pathetic how some people get.

LentillyFart · 04/07/2012 16:58

You can say 'fuck' on here you know. And your sentiments are twatty as well. HTH.

NutmegKate · 04/07/2012 16:59

See, I kind of like the dourness ( is that a word? ) and I also think he's probably a bit introverted and doesn't make a very good interviewee. He is a very talented player and consistent. Just look at the results - the only thing missing is a win in a Grand Slam competition.

But Brits knifing British sports people? 'Twas ever thus.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 04/07/2012 17:01

YANBU. He is a miserable git, and he comes across as arrogant, and far too up his own arse.

After all the Anyone But England crap that much of Scotland came out with when the football was on, and Andy Murrays own sentiments on the situation, I'd quite like to see him lose too.

But then that would be sinking to their very low standards, so perhaps not.

MrsReiver · 04/07/2012 17:01

Do you want Ferrer to win because you like Ferrer? Or because you don't like Andy Murray? There's a difference.

BorisTheBold · 04/07/2012 17:02

I find the cheering on his competition because he's Scottish crowd very amusing, I bet you lot are first in line to complain about Scottish people cheering on ABE.

BorisTheBold · 04/07/2012 17:02

Ooooh cross-posts - but I was right Grin

MrsReiver · 04/07/2012 17:02

But then that would be sinking to their very low standards, so perhaps not.

Oh go on - it's great down here :)

LentillyFart · 04/07/2012 17:03

Wouldn't it just be altogether more civilised to watch the match for it's sporting merits and leave the playground shit out in the garden?

OneHandFlapping · 04/07/2012 17:04

I look at his wooden face and think, there's a tennis player who doesn't have a career on the telly ahead of him when he retires from sport.

Nervousfirsttimer · 04/07/2012 17:05

Not cheering on his competition because he is Scottish, would happily support a Scot who embraced their Britishness but the arse does not, so I choose to support his opposition (wherever they are from!)

NutmegKate · 04/07/2012 17:08

I don't see him as arrogant TBH. But you have to have a little bit of arrogance to be a major sporting achiever. You absolutely have to believe you're potentially the best out of a group of elite players. Otherwise, what the hell is the point in being there?

And I'd much rather a dour and "arrogant" Andy Murray than a falsely modest Williams sister.

JustFabulous · 04/07/2012 17:09

It isn't his fault he has a pushy mother, if he has one.

YANBU you are being pathetic and childish. You don't have to watch, you know.

HappyJoyful · 04/07/2012 17:09

Some people really do take things right out of context..

It wasn't meant to be playground shit and it was just intended as a lighthearted, perhaps flippant, badly worded (clearly now) comment. I really do think this is mumsnet at it's worst when we get into calling people spiteful and pointing out spelling mistakes.

I guess I could have worded it as Murray v Ferrer - who do you wish to win ?

OP posts:
BorisTheBold · 04/07/2012 17:11

You do know you posted in AIBU, don't you?

I don't believe I took your post out of context and yes, you could have worded it better (but you didn't).

MrsReiver · 04/07/2012 17:12

LOL how was it taken out of context?

ChaoticismyLife · 04/07/2012 17:12

I couldn't give a damn if Murray wins or loses. Outraged does have a point though Wink

Fecklessdizzy · 04/07/2012 17:14

Actually I was rooting for Greece ... Oh wait, that one's finished, hasn't it ...

paradisechick · 04/07/2012 17:15

You could have, but you didn't because that's not what you meant!

Mummyinggnome · 04/07/2012 17:15

Yes, yubu and miserable too!

Frontpaw · 04/07/2012 17:16

But the 'anyone but England' was a response to a comment from another sportsman (Henman?) about wanting Scotland to -loose lose, so you can't really blame him. Plus he was quite young and stupid when he made that comment.

He is a great athlete. He is driven and I don't think he had much interest in the world beyong tennis. His mum (and her twin sister) were kick ass tennis players too, so yes, she probably did push him and his brother to go further. I knew her years ago before she had kids. Agassi's dad wasn't exactly a pussycat was he? We really can't afford to have athletes without the attitude that 'winning is everything' - we won't win a thing! Tom Daly has the same mindset - and his dad was an absolute diamond with regards to supporting his son.

Our athletes don't need to be 'nice' or 'personable'. If they did, we would have very small football teams! As long as he isn't kicking kittens through a fan, or paying dues to the BNP, he's fine by me.
