a set down and I'm beaming...

OP posts:

Rhubarb you would have thought that being a university town Aberdeen would be quite used to visitors from other places. Certainly I have English friends who studied there with no problems. How awful for your friend, I hope they reported it to the police?

I'm sure that there are racists in Scotland as in all countries but the majority of Scots aren't like that. I'm really sorry that any of my fellow Scots would let us down like that. Sad

fizzyapples · 10/07/2012 11:38

You corrected me on the other fred, Rhubarb. If you're alluding to me being a long term poster who likes to wind people up well, you have an active imagination. I'm just an 'umble tennis fan with an opinion. Okays?

fizzyapples · 10/07/2012 11:39

(& the other one os hidden, as is anything on here that raises my blood pressure!)

fizzyapples · 10/07/2012 11:42

Actaully I'm hiding this one too now!

fizzyapples · 10/07/2012 11:42

Actually !

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 11:42

Hey, it hasn't clouded my opinion of Scotland or the Scottish. It just makes me angry when yellow tries to justify it by pleading the poverty case.

And yes, we were all University students.

shesariver, it doesn't surprise me. I personally haven't seen any anti-Scot treatment but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. My Scottish friend would embarrassingly accuse people of being racist and anti-Scot when they objected to her drunken behaviour. She would loudly condemn the "facist English" and their pub opening times and of course everything was better in Scotland! She married an Englishman who lives in Scotland with her so she can't have hated them that much Wink

Generally, and I know this sounds trite, but I think the Scots are quite liked in England because the accent is just so sexy and Scots have this proud tradition and are steeped in culture. From what I've seen, there is a lot of respect for Scottish people around on the whole.

That doesn't detract from what you have said shesariver, but I don't think that any of the Scottish would say that about the English. Which is fair enough, we probably don't deserve it but I do think it's about time that history and stereotypes are put to bed once and for all.

GeekCool · 10/07/2012 11:42

Rhubarb I can give you back a similar set of incidents that have happened to me/family/friends in England.

Any idea how bloody frustrating it is trying to pay for something with a Scottish note. It's embarrassing as hell. All the jock stuff.

It happens on both sides. You seem to think you are being extremely magmanimus by adding in 'i still like Scotland' etc. Well good for you, it would be extremely silly to tar the entire nation with the same brush.

Anyway, I think Charlie Brooker had the right of it on Sunday. In our celeb-led world, Murray doesn't DO celeb.

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/08/andy-murray-not-miserable-just-normal

You get little jibes in like 'Scotland Paradise' and Uni fees stuff. The Scottish government spend their budget as they see fit. Deal with it or you could always hope the Indy vote goes through. Hmm

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 11:45

fizzyapples what the?

That other thread is now just a silly jokey thread and I corrected your spelling with a smiley wink because I honestly thought you were getting into the light-hearted spirit too!

Crossing threads is not very polite.

I think my jokey correction was my first post to you so I don't know what the hell you are going on about other than that? There is only one poster who I have openly said may well be a long term poster. I said it on the relevant thread to the thread starter - no allusions at all.

Why are you trying to make fights where none exist?

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 11:47

GeekCool er yes, I have paid for plenty of things, down south, with Scottish money. My father sends it to us for the kids.

Yes sometimes I have to explain it's legal tender but it's never been a problem.

So yes, I do think I know a little of what I am talking about.

paradisechick · 10/07/2012 11:51

The fact you have to explain it is a joke.

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 11:58

Not really.

Why would it bother you?
Some people may never see a Scottish note. Some places don't handle them.
Most now know that they are legal tender but yes you will still get questions. They are not being rude so why should you be?

Should I complain every time someone holds my £20 note up to the light to check it's not a fake?

FarrowAndBollock · 10/07/2012 12:08

'I guess I could have worded it as Murray v Ferrer - who do you wish to win ?' er, yes, you could have done, but you didn't, did you?

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 12:10

Farrow then I could come along and make a joke about them calling Federer Ferrer along with a smiley face that will then be taken out of context and turned into an insult. Good job I didn't eh?

grimbletart · 10/07/2012 12:43

To get away from the nationalistic mud slinging for a moment, could I just draw the attention of any who criticised Murray's crying to watch this:

It is the great Roger Federer breaking down so badly and crying when he lost to Rafa at the Australian open in 2009 that he had to stop his speech.

It is easy to see what is going on in both the Murray and Federer breakdowns. They are overwhelmed by the sympathetic support from their fans.

Surely we know what it is like when we are having a really tough time and trying to keep it together, then someone comes up and sympathises with you and finally the tears come....

Anyone remember Jana Natvotna crying on the Duchess of York's shoulder when she lost the Wimbledon final? She went on to win it the next year.

Sports people are human, except that the dedication and hard work they bring to their game off the court (have you ever seen them train, know what their schedules are, how they have to control their diet etc..) is superhuman. And then they fall at the last hurdle and they know their chance has gone for a least another year and they have to start all over again. Well, thank God they are human and not metronomes I say.

Perhaps some of those who criticise human frailty or a great player losing (not pointing at anyone on Mumsnet by the way) should get off their arses and try for themselves what these people do. That might shut them up.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 10/07/2012 12:55

Nice one grimble.

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 13:00

Hot AND vulnerable - loving it!
Some cool YouTube clips of him cracking up in fits of laughter too.

I think I might just have to stalk him.

shesariver · 10/07/2012 13:43

but I do think it's about time that history and stereotypes are put to bed once and for all. totally agree with you there rhubarb.

On the plus side I have my best friend back closer. She is a staunch supporter of the SNP and its funny listening to her and her DHs ribbing of each other. Its called humour, something sadly lacking from a lot of idiotic people on both sides of the border.

TheRhubarb · 10/07/2012 14:27

Too true there.

grimbletart · 10/07/2012 15:23

Whoops - I meant Duchess of Kent, not York, by the way.

AmIthatbad · 10/07/2012 19:10

OP - I have read back to double check - I am pretty sure that I did not attribute either the ABE or mother's looks reasons to you. I said some twats as a general statement, as some had been (on this and other threads) using these as reasons to slag him off and wish defeat on him. I didn't link this to you, so I don't accept that I am twisting things.

One thing I did, though, was to pick up on your spelling of lose - and I would now take the opportunity to apologise for that, which I will accept was twattish of me. I make plenty of spelling mistakes myself - pot, kettle and all that. So sorry for repeating that bit.

@Rhubarb - I am also appalled at this happening. We have so many of different nationalities living and working together, that most people hardly notice if you are English. Seriously, I have lived here all my life and never seen any of the behaviour you described.
