So people support anyone but Murray because some Scots support anyone but England.

And they call US petty!

redlac · 04/07/2012 19:18

What-oh! Chin chin :)

ClaireBunting · 04/07/2012 19:18

Remember when that saintly Tim deliberately hit a ball at a ball girl at Wimbledon and was disqualified?

yellowraincoat · 04/07/2012 19:19

And yes I know Murray also supported anyone but England, but he did say it was a joke.

He was almost certainly lying but anyway, at least he pretended

MrsReiver · 04/07/2012 19:20

Did he? Might have to revise my opinion!

HappyJoyful · 04/07/2012 19:21

Sorry lentillyfart but I never intended to be smug, I also think 'downright nasty' is a tad over the top in comment to my beaming at not wanting him to win..goodness I would hate to think what you would say to someone that really was being nasty. I am not prissy either in response to a correction on spelling, far from it but it could have been put more kindly- what about thinking that I may have struggled hard all my life to learn spelling/grammer etc and that to get flamed for it in such a way is again tad ott in my opinion. I also in no way or in any comment I make take away from him that he suffered a traumatic experience in his childhood..I take offence to you making reference to me to 'think about this' jeepers going a bit deep into this.

AmIthatbad · 04/07/2012 19:22

How the hell is he racist?

As others have pointed out, the Anyone but England comment was part of a response to 15 minutes of good natured banter between him and Henman. Always quoted out of context by usually English with chips on their shoulder people.

For the record, one set of grandparents are English, his girlfriend is English and he lives, I believe, in Surrey.

The lad is also a professional who is focussed on his game. It's his job and he takes it seriously. Why should he be Mr Entertainment?

Jeez.

PrettyCherryTrees · 04/07/2012 19:23

I am a Scot. Of course I am British too but if you ask my nationality I would say Scottish. This doesn't make me anti English, or anti British but I consider myself Scottish a long way before considering myself British. Most Scots I know would say the same.

You must remember that we aren't just another northern county. We were a nation in our own right long before the union of crowns or union of parlaments.

We had and still have our own legal system, banking system, educational system, language and traditions. Our culture is distinctly different to England - not better just different.

You wouldn't expect a French person to consider themselves European before 'French' would you? Well it's the same kind of relationship for many Scots (not all of course).

Also consider that there aren't very any of us (less people in Scotland than in London) and we have a long history of fairly brutal repression.

Now of course we part of the UK but the above things do inform our cultural identity just as for example Englands historical empire building informs Englands.

What Andy Murray said about anyone but England was silly but no different than most Scottish 19yo men would have said. Bear in mind that if the English football team wins it's not a British victory it's an English one.

If you prefer to support Roger F go ahead but you should respect Andy's talent and dedication and I think your op was a bit mean spirited.

I wouldn't worry anyway if he wins the media will soon rebrand him as British. They only consider us Scots if we're losing.

HappyJoyful · 04/07/2012 19:24

Also, to those mentioning the Scottish/English debate again, not something I gave as a reason for disliking him..I don't at any point state where I am from.

I am also entirely unsure how it is mean spirited to want someone to win a match?? Ehh, surely thats life and there are winners and losers.

Appreciate the kind, friendly posts supporting Ferrer (and me!)

yellowraincoat · 04/07/2012 19:24

Oh yes, I forgot about the race that is "English".

Racist Andy Murray doesn't bumlick the English shocker.

AmIthatbad · 04/07/2012 19:24

And I can't believe that someone said they didn't know who Sir Chris Hoy was Shock

ChaoticismyLife · 04/07/2012 19:31

"So people support anyone but Murray because some Scots support anyone but England."

Some people may, I don't know. My point being that if ABE is acceptable than so is ABMurray.

For myself, my interest is such that I keep forgetting that Wimbledon is on. However, because of this thread I've switched on i-player and have to say Murray is playing well.

BistoBear · 04/07/2012 19:32

Great post PrettyCherryTrees :)

ChaoticismyLife · 04/07/2012 19:35

That was me BlushGrin

In my defence I'm not in the slightest bit sporty. I did google him and when I did I realised that I have heard of him, not entirely sure when or how ... maybe sometime around/to do with the Commonwealth games maybe?

PrettyCherryTrees · 04/07/2012 19:35

OP I would never have called you mean spirited if you had said "AIBU to want Roger F to win because he's so talented and luffly".

But you didn't say that did you?

You said you wanted Andy to said you wanted Andy to lose because you didn't like him or his mum.

That in my book is meanspirited OP.

I put my comments about the Scottish/English thing to try give a context to Andy's calling himself Scottish rather than British which has neen discussed in this thread. I haven't called you racist or implied that at all.

wildfig · 04/07/2012 19:36

It's mean-spirited to want someone to lose a match. Which is what your thread was about, initially, at least. Before you moved the tennis nets goalposts.

SauvignonBlanche · 04/07/2012 19:37

YES!
How disappointing for you OP! Grin

JosephineCD · 04/07/2012 19:37

He won!

ClaireBunting · 04/07/2012 19:37

Job done, Andy.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, OP

MrsReiver · 04/07/2012 19:37

Oh well - not so HappyJoyful now I imagine?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 04/07/2012 19:37

He's still British.

redlac · 04/07/2012 19:37

Go Andy!!!

yellowraincoat · 04/07/2012 19:38

Chaotic, I really don't think it is the same thing at all.

Maybe a lot of English people don't realise how much resentment there is towards England in much of Scotland. Whether that's justified or not is harder to say but it is there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the English have resented grumpy Scottish tennis players throughout the centuries.
