a set down and I'm beaming...

I think Murray already is something positive for the town. He's the best that Britain has to offer in tennis, so we should be proud of him anyway.

I agree that I think people don't like him because he's a bit dour and surly. He's an athlete, FFS, not a stand up comedian. People should get a grip.

JennyPiccolo · 05/07/2012 10:45

ALSO I think his mum getting slagged off by the media is just pure woman-hating cheap journalism. It's like they can't admit someone actually did a good job of raising a child so they need to paint her as a pushy, aggressive person.

WilsonFrickett · 05/07/2012 10:46

rubber may I humbly suggest you already have something positive for the town, IME all the Murrays are fantastic ambassadors for Dunblane. And with the anniversary just been and gone - we don't forget. We never will.

NicholasTeakozy · 05/07/2012 10:54

Queenofsiburbia you're welcome. :o It's probably my favourite routine for a few reasons; the look of mischievous joy on his face when he says 'a Scottish paedophile, and that's the worst sort of paedophile there is'. The way he describes the Scottish as Scotch. And that it was recorded in Glasgow.

As for Andy Murray, I really rate the guy. He's a fantastic player, and comes across as having a dry sense of humour. As for him not wanting England to win, why should he?

Queenofsiburbia · 05/07/2012 11:05

Luckily nobody seems to have spotted my 'sp' or is too polite to comment Blush
I think my phone is a sixteenth scotch and trying to undermine me Smile or maybe was trying to change eponymous to anonymous ?!

HappyJoyful · 05/07/2012 12:06

rubberglove, you're adding your own interpretation there of what I said..

"I find him arrogant, pushy mother, annoying and not pleasant to watch"

I don't like his apparent (IMO however, as others have suggested it's well supported by tennis players, coaches and umpires alike) lack of sportsmanship and attitude on court.

Of course we can find images of him crying at defeat, or being a happy close family. Equally you can find images and examples of him refusing to shake umpires hands, stomping off court and generally being very unpleasant.

For others that have made it a Scots / English debate, I also didn't imply any preference there. I certainly didn't or don't take any factor from his childhood and the tragedy of Dunblane into my preferences either.

Those claiming the best British tennis player arguement of course, he was born here etc but has been trained in both Spain and Miami for quite some time now - I believe since he was 15, so I still would disagree he's a great advert for 'British tennis' given we've clearly not had much impact in training him.

Prettycherrytree, I wont be reading back on the thread with a 'level head' I also have no intention of attempting to do all those emoticons.. life is simply too short! I find Mumsnet is great for practical advice, support and I have also been privy to some very kind things from wonderful people. If people wish to use to it in other ways, live and let live..I was not upset, I was merely purely flabbagasted at the IMO unescessary personal comments directed at someone for expressing a view contrary (and I'm sorry but hardly massively controversial) to some on a sporting event, which has many have pointed out is just that - an opportunity to support one or other player or team.

.. I always, rightly or now probably wrongly (naively) felt the AIBU was a bit of fun, yes childish in many ways and meant you got 'interesting' views one way or the other - not such a personal slighting. As I say, things like YABU, he's Scottish, I love him; YABU, he's done so much for British tennis... all that sort of thing. Not below the belt bashing like I'm pathetic, I'm a trying to be cool, I've achieved nothing blahh blahh blahh

Anyways, roll on tomorrow! here's to a great match.

Perhaps we need an I want Tsonga to win thread...I watch and wait. Maybe those that posted the I hate Andy comments on here will join me! They were harsher than my I dislike him!

redlac · 05/07/2012 13:08

do you think he just rocked up to some training camp in spain aged 15 and said "haw bawbag, gies a baw and a racket?" Of course Britain must have had some impact in training him. Do you have the same views when a fabulous 15 year old footballer is snapped up by Inter Milan from the depths of Manchester - would he not be classed as British/English when he played?

PeppermintPasty · 05/07/2012 13:28

AIBU is often a bunfight. Pushy mother argument is tired old sexist claptrap. Sportsman don't have to talk they have to perform.

Fin.

Am fairly appalled at myself for not knowing about the Dunblane connection and AM though. Blimey. Good old MN.

igggi · 05/07/2012 13:29

There is something very unsporting about ever cheering a loss isn't there, a poor attitude I think.

GeekCool · 05/07/2012 13:35

redlac :o

I agree with Rubber also. I'm backing Murray all the way! People haven't warmed him to him as he isn't a smiley Rafa, or confident Fed. He hasn't burst on the scene like Djok.

I could say I hope he wins purely to see the lemon sucking faces of others but I won't, because that would be wrong wouldn't it... :o

redlac · 05/07/2012 13:39

AND he doesn't pick his pants oot his arse like Nadal :)

GeekCool · 05/07/2012 13:47

rofl that's very true.

WilsonFrickett · 05/07/2012 14:00

Oh FFS I can't believe you just said 'he isn't an advert for British tennis because he was trained abroad'. That's the most ridiculous thing I think I've ever heard. So if he'd stayed here, with our frankly non-existent training facilities (although I believe there's been a big improvement recently) and pottered about in the lower echelons of professional tennis he'd be 'more British'. That's just silly.

Here's a tip OP. When you're in a hole? Stop digging.

CurrySpice · 05/07/2012 14:08

PrettyCherryTrees - I'm addressing you as if you're a rabid Enlish hater?!? Really? Are you reading the same posts as me or is your irritation causing you to purposely misread? I think I have been extremely measured and I thought we were having a perfectly reasonable debate! You are clearly reading things into my posts that are not there.

There was even a smiley and I "we don't have a point of disagreement" comment. I think you need to get off your high horse!!

I merely picked up a few things that your posts raised in mind and addressed them perfectly calmly. Sorry I have failed to comply with you world view! Sheesh!!

HappyJoyful · 05/07/2012 14:50

Curryspice I agree with your comment that some people here need to get off high horse and that they need to see it as a bit of banter and differing opinions make the world a better place surely ?!

WilsonFrickett, I'm happy to keep up my Murray dislike for whatever reasons really - agree as you say, he wouldn't have got far as you say if he had stayed here just don't think he's 'home-grown' and all that and that there is a lot of hype etc.

Don't feel in the slightest I have to dig out of a hole.. if you do read some of the posts on here there are actually other people that agree - it's not like every single person is an Andy fan.. and my comments for not liking him aren't necessarily the cleverest, brightest or perhaps to everyone's taste, they are just merely an opinion.

Interesting no comments have been made about Jamie Murray actually having won Wimbledon - now there is an 'unsung' star that probably should be / have been receiving far more attention, praise and credibility for his talents then he has done.

OP posts:
Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 14:57

Aparently the LTA had a lot to do with his training when he was a youngster and buggered up his game. Andy always says that Jamie is the better player.

rubberglove · 05/07/2012 15:56

It's the manner of your comment though happyjoyful. It is one thing not being a fan, but beaming in delight at someone losing, is a bit spiteful. If he had committed an awful crime, or hurt you personally, well I could understand it.

There are many sporting people who I haven't taken too, including British ones. But no I wouldn't be that passionate about them losing

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 15:58

Is DDs Aunty July Murray?!!

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 15:58

Judy. Bloody autocorrect

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 15:59

Oops.... Wandered into the wrong thread....

Backing out (accompanying beeping sound).

rubberglove · 05/07/2012 16:11

The William's sister's father never seems to be labelled as pushy. You know as much about Judy Murray as we do about him. Tabloid speculation.

The Murrays are well respected and liked in Dunblane.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 05/07/2012 16:18

Good point, rubberglove. Williams pere is often chortled at, indulgently, and called 'eccentric' or 'colourful', but never 'pushy'. That seems to be reserved for women.

yellowraincoat · 05/07/2012 16:27

Queenofsiburbia I spose your use of the word "Scotch" was meant to be some kind of joke?

HappyJoyful · 05/07/2012 16:31

rubbergolve. I didn't use word delight.. beaming yes and did retract and try and say I should have worded it perhaps differently and more 'tactfully'. To be called spiteful for that is extreme IMO. Spite has to have malicious intent as you say, am well aware he's never hurt me or committed a crime (that I'm aware of) but I didn't mean it with spite I just don't particularly like chap - is that so wrong ?! anyway, I'll be told to get over it for posting again!

Interesting comment about the Williams father. Guess same as Judy ultimately he wanted the best for his girls and he pushed them, wondering like you say if it's only mothers therefore that get slayed for it..Sharapova had equally pushy parents.

OP posts:
MrsReiver · 05/07/2012 16:38

do you think he just rocked up to some training camp in spain aged 15 and said "haw bawbag, gies a baw and a racket?"

Of course he didn't, he's Scotch. He turned up with a broken buckfast bottle, nicked their rackets then drove off in a VW Golf with alloys and massive exhaust!
