a set down and I'm beaming...

OP posts:
AmIthatbad · 08/07/2012 18:40

That's totally understandable Kelly. I too have my favourites Wink

What pisses me off is that some twats have said they want a player to lose (or even loose Hmm) based on a) a throwaway comment years ago or b) - even more pitiable - because they don't like his mother's face.

And to come on and gloat is actually quite pitiable.

Never mind, they'll be onto something else tomorrow, I'm sure.

AmIthatbad · 08/07/2012 18:41

sorry, I've used "pitiable" twice. Maybe because I didn't want to use the term cuntish

Fireandashes · 08/07/2012 18:43

He may have lost the match but with that gracious speech and genuine show of emotion I hope he has won a lot of new fans.

CurrySpice · 08/07/2012 18:43

AmI you have said everything I wanted to. Some people are driven by positive emotions. Some by negative. Andy Murray has been positive. Many people on this thread have been the opposite.

AmIthatbad · 08/07/2012 18:48

Curry Just a couple of them. I had to leave these threads last night, because it was primary school stuff, and I wouldn't have been back if that sad little gloat hadn't appeared in my "I'm On" bit.

Sad little lives.

CurrySpice · 08/07/2012 18:49

Indeed. I agree. I prefer to be a glass half full kinda girl. I expect the anti-Murray brigade are the same people who think the Olympics will be boring / a disaster / embarrassing.

AllieZ · 08/07/2012 18:57

OP, there is mis-spelling and there is mis-spelling in a way that the word you've ended up with means something different. Anyone with self-respect would avoid such an error.

As for Murray: "anyone but"

trixymalixy · 08/07/2012 19:02

Surely it's a bit hypocritical to slag Andy for a comment he made years ago that was taken out of context, and then say "anyone but Andy". Pot, kettle, black.

JamesMurphy · 08/07/2012 19:06

I've only looked at the last two pages of this thread.

I really like Andy, I have for ages. I was glad he made it to the final and that he played so well. Roger had to play his best to beat him. I thought Andy's speech was moving and I was pleased the crowd gave him so much support. I hope that people will lay off him now. He has every right to be serious and reserved in public.

People need to get over the his hating the English thing. It's ridiculous. He made a flippant comment very many years ago when he was very young. I imagine he was thinking about football when he said it.

Needstotidyup · 08/07/2012 19:10

Andy's speech was moving and articulate. The OP cannot differentiate between lose and loose. Hmmmm

PrettyCherryTrees · 08/07/2012 19:30

Well that was exciting!!! Smile

Well done Mr Federer.

Nevermind Andy you've made us proud, how about seeing if you can pick us up a wee Olympic medal instead eh? no pressure mind Grin

For everyone else - meet you here again this time next year?

ilovesooty · 08/07/2012 19:35

He may have lost the match but with that gracious speech and genuine show of emotion I hope he has won a lot of new fans

I agree.

VolAuVent · 08/07/2012 19:42

YABU. He's a fantastic player and he's not arrogant, just very shy. And why shouldn't he be? It's a tennis match, not the X Factor.

Groovee · 08/07/2012 19:45

YABU, he's a sweetie who the media took the pee out of with him making a couple of crass comments when he was younger. I doubt any of us could be number 4 in the world of tennis.

recall · 08/07/2012 23:55

and he survived the Dunblane massacre, that is why I am always behind him.

SunnyOutlook · 09/07/2012 00:04

YABU and petty and I don't get people like you.

The Daily Mail has a lot to be proud of.

Sometimes I despair of this country, just say the best player won and leave it there.

NicholasTeakozy · 09/07/2012 00:11

Federer was just supreme in the last two sets. At least we can say a British player got to a singles final at Wimbledon. I missed the first two sets due to a combination of MotoGP, delayed Moto3 race and going out, but Murray has nowt to be ashamed of.

There's always next year.

Mollie272 · 09/07/2012 02:50

Andy Murray was amazing today and very gracious in defeat.

The posters using the "anyone but England" quote as a justification for not supporting him (or indeed for cheering for him to lose) are showing themselves to be extremely small-minded and misinformed.

Andy was interviewed with Tim Henman in 2006 and was asked by the journalist if he would be supporting Scotland in the World Cup - the journalist knowing, of course, that Scotland had not qualified for the tournament. Murray replied, in jest, that he would support anyone but England.

Listen to Henman explain it

His remarks were then taken out of context and reported by newspapers known for their journalistic integrity - The Daily Mail and The Mirror.

The tabloids twist and manipulate a story to create bad-feeling and sell more copies of their papers - no surprise there.

I am surprised though, by the number of people who were taken in by it.

Fools.

ExcitedElectrons · 09/07/2012 08:21

I dislike Murray and also wanted him to lose, sorry.
And I am looking forward to the olympics!

mamataurus · 09/07/2012 09:24

I am quite shocked at the anti Andy comments posted here, do you all personally know Andy?, he gave a good account of himself yesterday, and his speech showed he is a sensitive person and I hope he has won some more fans. I hope this final will inspire him to greater things especially with the Olympics now coming up and US Open, I believe he will win a grandslam soon. Best of luck to him.

The media have played all this up.

Murray has made some anti-English sentiments in the past and probably still feels that way as do many other Scots.
Yet the majority of those cheering him on and supporting him at Wimbledon were English.
Because the majority of the English would cheer on a Scot, Welsh or Irish man or woman if they were playing for their country.

There has been a HUGE amount of support for Murray from all parts of the UK. Why can't people focus on that? Why listen to what the whingeing media have to say?

recall · 09/07/2012 13:10

I am English and will always back the Scotts, I find the fact that they get so cross with English part of their charm, its just traditional Grin

IcantSleep · 09/07/2012 13:18

His remarks from years ago were maybe taken out of context. BUT he WAS live on 'Soccer am' one morning saying exactly the same thing about never supporting England, and wanting anyone to win as long as it wasnt England. Infact, he even went out of his way to wear the football shirt of whichever country England were going to be playing next. (can't remember who it was)
Why would you go on such a show with that attitude, knowing that it is going to wind people up?

paradisechick · 09/07/2012 13:29

People from Scotland aren't obliged to support England.
