that ITV documentary on now is treating cold blooded murderers as normal human beings. They are showing no remorse but detailing their crimes, I think it's awful they are even being given airplay, done get me started on the perks they have (Christmas dinner) etc. The poor families of their victims is what I think.....

totally agree with cory and not all 'murderers' are 'cold blooded' many do stupid things in anger and drink and regret them for ever (The bit I saw showed a man talking about how he thinks about what he did roughly every 10 mins and regrets in deeply)

Re-offending is not massively to do with 'holiday camp' prison (seriously) but offenders own life experiences, skills and inability to stay away from areas/people - for example over 3/4's pf the male prison population have problems with reading and writing, poor life skills and few employability skills

ReindeerBollocks · 27/06/2012 21:00

Majority of prisoners are ex servicemen or people who spent their lives in care.

Having worked with prisoners before they are human beings who have committed terrible crimes, but they aren't monsters. They need to understand their rimes as much as the general public do. These people should receive support to help them deal with their lives and truly reform them. This should, in turn, be continued on the outside. Unfortunately the public resources aren't there and so it's easier sometimes to fall back to what they know tan change when very few people will give them a chance.

YABU on so many levels, but I don't understand why you watched it if its making you so unwell you want to vomit.

ReindeerBollocks · 27/06/2012 21:00

*people who spent their childhood in care.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 27/06/2012 22:03

Wonderful post ReindeerBollocks Thanks

hipposaurus · 27/06/2012 22:18

Yanbu. Bring back the death penalty.

Lara2 · 27/06/2012 22:18

I can't remember who said it, but there's a quote about being able to judge a society by it's penal system. Surely it's about rehabilitation, being humane etc? I'd feel very uncomfortable if we were anything less.

waterlego6064 · 27/06/2012 22:47

Talk us through your excellent idea, hipposaurus.

Or....don't bother, since there is no way it will ever happen Grin

PenisVanLesbian · 27/06/2012 22:54

yeah, bring back the death penalty! And all those people who we later discover are innocent...we don't care about them, do we? I mean, its not like we're against the murder of innocent people, are we?

Oh, wait a minute....Hmm

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 27/06/2012 23:19

If nothing else, the death penalty costs millions of dollars. Life in prison is significantly cheaper, and IMO is a far worse punishment.

TheFarSide · 27/06/2012 23:23

I always wonder if those people who advocate the death penalty would be willing to actually administer it.

Hippo - would you flick the switch?

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:26

Ha! Some people on here don't have a clue. A couple of years ago when I was 18 I hung about in a bad crowd, they were always in and out of jail and they loved it! It's a joke.

Why the hell should they be treated better than people actually are out of jail. It should be a punishment, and a very tough one at that.

They have 4+ choices for meals. Kids at school don't get that.
They get to sit their GCSE's for free. Good, law abiding people would have to pay for that.
They're allowed money. They have xboxes. They have music players. Tv's.
One guy had silk sheets and matching curtains Hmm
On coming out of jail, if they are homeless they HAVE to be rehomed as a matter if urgency which means a lot of them end up in big houses that are more suited to families, instead of the bedsits that are usually offered by the council to single people.
Do you know they also get given money on coming out too?

Our system obviously isn't working as people are reoffending constantly. There's no fear anymore.

It makes me absolutely sick to the stomach.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 27/06/2012 23:27

Head. Desk.

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:31

And a few of you banging on about giving them things to calm them down to prevent fighting etc. what?!!

So basically we should reward people to prevent bad things from happening.

The reason that they don't fight is that they should be scared of the consequences. Not because their time is taken up sat on their arses playing xbox games.

No wonder this country is going to shit with opinions like that.

How would you feel if your child had been murdered, and the person who did it was enjoying himself in prison, with his tv, games console, earning a few gcses's and tending to his sodding budgies.

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:32

Head. Oven.

TheFarSide · 27/06/2012 23:34

What is your policy for reducing crime and reoffending WhiteWidow?

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:36

I don't have one and I'm not going to pretend I have one. That doesn't mean I agree with pussyfooting around criminals.

You do know they laugh at people like you. They LAUGH because do-gooders are making their 'graft' as they call it, easier.

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:37

I couldn't count how many people I've heard say 'I need to go to jail to sort my head out'.

A lot of people won't have experienced these people like I have I suppose, from my point of view.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 27/06/2012 23:38

Actually WhiteWidow I have lost someone I loved dearly to a murdering prick. Have you? If not, please don't tell me how I SHOULD feel according to you.

Perhaps you should do some reading on the subject and the psychology that goes into it. I'm not going to waste my time explaining why this is what we do because last time I had my pain of losing my loved one mocked.

Would someone else mind stepping in? I think it's time for me to hide this thread.

Shullbit · 27/06/2012 23:38

The death penalty does not work.

And besides, it would be hypocrisy at its best. What makes those who carry out the death penalty, any better than those who are there for murder? So I suppose those who did carry out the death penalty, should then face death too?

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:43

Actually Lurking my real dad* was murdered. So yes I DO know.

Bore off with pyscho babble, I'm telling you what these people actually think of it. They see it as what it is, a joke. It's a laugh to them.

*i say real dad because I speak about my dad on here and by that I mean the man who brought me up.

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:44

And I'll just add I do not believe in the death penalty.

TheFarSide · 27/06/2012 23:45

WW I think there are several on this thread who have direct experience of offenders.

Hanging out with a few bad guys has given you a particular perspective, but it isn't the only perspective.

ilovesooty · 27/06/2012 23:47

On coming out of jail, if they are homeless they HAVE to be rehomed as a matter if urgency which means a lot of them end up in big houses that are more suited to families, instead of the bedsits that are usually offered by the council to single people

Rubbish.

WhiteWidow · 27/06/2012 23:49

Direct experience where the offender needs to be on his behaviour and won't actually come out with what he really thinks.

No it isn't rubbish at all. Shows how much you know about what happens afterwards then.

ilovesooty · 27/06/2012 23:50

Shows how much you know about what happens afterwards then

I work with offenders when they are released from prison, picking them up from the gate on release.

What you said is rubbish.
