To think that we should give the Faulklands back to Argentina?

Ok I don't know much about the Falklands war but from what I can gather we stole them from Argentina. I think we should give them back but of course it's complicated.
Can anyone fill me in on why Britain took them in the first place? Thanks.

We didn't steal them from Argentina, they are 250 miles from Argentina, Argentinians have never lived on the Falklands, there is no possible reason for us to give them back.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2012 22:09

Let me Google that for you

madmouse · 19/06/2012 22:09

Let's allow the Falklanders to decide for themselves shall we.

manicbmc · 19/06/2012 22:09

Can't believe it... but I agree with Josephine.

The people who live there are British citizens and it should be up to them to decide.

Here you go, this should tell you (if you've got an hour to spare)!:

No, no, no.

The Islanders are having a referendum, their island, they decide.

The people who populate the Falklands are British.

They have chosen to remain British (I think there was a vote/referendum)

The argentines have only stepped this up again because British prospecting companies have found quite a lot of oil there recently.

Chubfuddler · 19/06/2012 22:13

Last time I used that linky my post got deleted.

nocake · 19/06/2012 22:13

The first reported sighting of the islands was by the Dutch, the first landing by the British and the first settlement was French... you can see why the Argentines have a good claim..........

Or it might be better to let the people who live there decide who governs them?
