To think that we should give the Faulklands back to Argentina?

Ok I don't know much about the Falklands war but from what I can gather we stole them from Argentina. I think we should give them back but of course it's complicated.
Can anyone fill me in on why Britain took them in the first place? Thanks.

Yes yes - the Falkands invaded us first so obviously the only course of action open to us is to give them back to Vietnam. Way to go OP - your grasp of world events is truly staggering.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2012 22:14

Oh Chubfuddler you mean I might get my first deleted by Mumsnet post... I've been so good.

numbum · 19/06/2012 22:16

We should give England back to the Germans..oh the irony

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 19/06/2012 22:17

OP - what is your opinion on the Elgin Marbles?

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/06/2012 22:17

What I don't understand is why Argentina give a shit about a tiny little outpost 250 miles from them.
If, as has been said many times, it's about oil in the South Atlantic, then I think the UK and Argentina should get together and share all profits.
How simple would that be?

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:17

And the USA should give America back to us Brits! Ha!

manicbmc · 19/06/2012 22:18

The Falklands belong to the penguins!

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:18

Why should we share the profits LadyBeagle? It's a British territory?

numbum · 19/06/2012 22:18

No the Americas is owned by the Italians surely (discovered by Christopher Columbus)

ivykaty44 · 19/06/2012 22:19

I think we should give England back to france - as I am sure somewhere along the line we knicked it off them Wink

cantspel · 19/06/2012 22:20

Well who wants the Isle of Wright?

lovebunny · 19/06/2012 22:21

unreasonable. keep the falklands. the time to give them back was in 1981 when it was becoming clear there would be trouble. the people want to be british. let them.

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:21

I think America was discovered by Amerigo someone. Maybe Spanish?

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:22

Sorry. Yes Italian. Amerigo Vespucci.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2012 22:22

EverybodysSleepyEyed until very recently I thought the Elgin Marbles were like round glass things that children use. I am almost 40 years old. What an embarrassment.

I've never understood the bagsying of countries anyway. Otherwise someone could throw me out of Canada, where I emigrated, back to the UK, where I would be asked to go back to Russia, Poland, France, Belgium and Scotland.

numbum · 19/06/2012 22:22

*In 1497, the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci discovered a new country, and it was named America by the map maker, Martin Waldseemuller.

However, it was later realized that AmerigoÂ’s friend, the Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus, had been there a few years earlier in 1492. But it was too late to rename the country Columbia.

More recently evidence has appeared showing that in fact it was the Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho who discovered America in 1421.*

Ah so America is Chinese in fact!

iceandsliceplease · 19/06/2012 22:23

Dear Sean Penn,

Yes, we should definitely ignore the wishes of the Falklanders, deny them the right to self-determination, refuse to allow a referendum, and give back to Argentina a territory they never owned, never populated, and have no claim to. Definitely. Especially when two Falklanders were killed in a needless war that Argentina caused.

Yours,

Screaming Lord Sutch x

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2012 22:23

Can I go to Tooting and 'discover' it? No. Then no one can discover America, when there were already people living there.

longfingernails · 19/06/2012 22:24

toptramp Did you receive the formative years of your education under Labour, perchance?

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:25

And Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian, who worked in Spain, but sailed under a Portuguese flag.

In that case the Falklands should definitely be given back to the Dutch.

ivykaty44 · 19/06/2012 22:25

so who owns australia - just so I know? and if you could let me into the secret of who owns greece and all their problems at the same time as I am curious

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 19/06/2012 22:26

Falklands were uninhabitated until the British and French settled there

I also thought the Elgin Marbles were toys until I was 19 and went to the British Museum and it dawned on me how stupid I was!!!

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/06/2012 22:28

Jersey should go back to the French........oh no hang on, I don't want to be french. Scrap that.

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:28

I don't know about Australia but Cyprus should be given back to Greece.

bogeyface · 19/06/2012 22:28

Interesting fact.....

The Isle of Wight is actually owned by Peru and is twinned with the Falklands!

If the islanders wanted to be Argentinians then it would be a different matter, but they dont, they want to be British so if they are happy with the status quo then thats the only point to consider imo.
