To think that we should give the Faulklands back to Argentina?

Ok I don't know much about the Falklands war but from what I can gather we stole them from Argentina. I think we should give them back but of course it's complicated.
Can anyone fill me in on why Britain took them in the first place? Thanks.

Why not let Argentina have weekend access?

They could take the Falklands to MacDonald's or ten pin bowling or Laser Quest every other Saturday.

YABU OP. Next time do a bit of background reading rather than parade your ignorance?

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/06/2012 22:58

Actually the Maoris aren't the indigeous inhabitants of New Zealand Aurotarua.

Shared care must be the way forward. Grin

bogeyface · 19/06/2012 23:43

Totally agree, 50/50 care is the only way to show the Falklands that although we have fallen out with each other, we both love the Islands.

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/06/2012 23:47

Quite, they need to learn to share.
See, if MN ruled the world we'd all mostly advise compromise, and would generally sort out all world problems with PARD.

notnanny · 19/06/2012 23:49

The Falklands need to feel secure and safe that neither of us will leave them again, so perhaps it's best if they stay in the family home rather than force them to move continents twice a week.

Kewcumber · 19/06/2012 23:51

There was no "Argentina" when Britain re-established its sovereignty in 1833. I suggest we offer to give it back to United Provinces of South America if they would like to reform such a country...

Also that the British "expelled" teh "argentinian" civilians is a myth as far as I know. The few civilian south americans who were there were offered the choice to stay or go and the majority remained.

Its highly unlikely that oil can be economically extracted in teh Falklands Islands but I have heard that there is a possibility that the agreement not to drill in the antarctic may fall apart when oil becomes scarcer at which point the Falkland Islands will be very handy indeed to whomever has them.

technically its just about as close to Chile - why aren't they joining the fight?

Kewcumber · 20/06/2012 00:02

Does Tenerife know Morocco is about to stake its claim?

Kewcumber · 20/06/2012 00:03

"I'm not sure we can afford it" - start saving Maryz, apparently there's a few people quite keen on the idea...

Can we all throw our hat in the ring for Hawaii?

notnanny · 20/06/2012 00:08

Ah Northern Ireland, Britain's errant lovechild. We'd almost forgotten about him, he'll be needing some maintenance money - or at least an iPad for Christmas.

MamaMaiasaura · 20/06/2012 00:09

Argentina are testing their chance as we don't have an aircraft carrier at present (one of which could obliterate their entire army)

notnanny · 20/06/2012 00:11

I think if anyone's considering using aircraft carriers we'll need to get our solicitors involved.

bogeyface · 20/06/2012 00:14

The use of aircraft carriers when the Falklands arent used to them could actually be considered abusive, so we need to be careful.

Kewcumber · 20/06/2012 00:15

Ah but Mama, as a result of the Conflict (I think you'll find it wasn't a "war" OP), we built a landing strip capable of taking wide bodied jets (I know because I audited the building of it) so not such a need for a carrier these days.

I think I'm going to need to see the DNA results for Hawaii.

You can have Jamaica, I am sticking my flag onto the Maldives, Maritius and Barbados.
