To think that we should give the Faulklands back to Argentina?

Ok I don't know much about the Falklands war but from what I can gather we stole them from Argentina. I think we should give them back but of course it's complicated.
Can anyone fill me in on why Britain took them in the first place? Thanks.

Isnt their new president a bit of a Sarah Palin extremeist type? Or did I dream that?

MammaTJ · 19/06/2012 22:33

Not only should we not give the Falklands 'back' to Argentina, but we should ban their athletes from taking part in the Olympic Games taking place here after the disgusting display of them 'training' on our soldiers war graves there.

sensuallettuce · 19/06/2012 22:33

It's the oil. OH served there.

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/06/2012 22:34

Just because it would be a peaceful solution really, Downnotout.
If it's only about oil (and I think it must be) then the Falklands can stay British, as they should, and everybody would live happily ever after Grin.
It would be a compromise, which is always the best option.
Sadly, it's not the way Governments think, which is why we always end up killing each other in unnecessary wars.

No the Americas is owned by the Italians surely (discovered by Christopher Columbus)

I think the Native Americans were already happily living here before anyone discovered it.
I agree that the Falkland islanders should decide, they are the ones who live there.

Is Berwick still at war with someone?

takingiteasy · 19/06/2012 22:40

How did they end up living there? It looks freezing and is in the middle of nowhere. I seen a job advertised for the islands dh wanted me to apply and relocate for shits and giggles.

Downnotout · 19/06/2012 22:43

Well it wouldn't be a peaceful solution because the only people who live there are British. And they want to stay British. We would be deserting them.

Did you see the remembrance service there last week. It was very moving and every one of them wanted to pay tribute to the British soldiers who gave their lives to protect them.

GothAnneGeddes · 19/06/2012 22:43

YABU

And like the U.S, Australia was already inhabited and so not "discovered" by anyone.

AKMD · 19/06/2012 22:43

Oh YABU and ridiculous. Who wants some scraggy rocks rather too close to the Antarctic? Oh, the Falkland Islanders!

Who wants the oil in the Falklands sea borders? Oh, everyone!

Bit insulting to all the families of the solders that fell in that war too actually OP.

takingiteasy · 19/06/2012 22:48

Ah thanks for clearing that up lunatic! I was worried for Berwick after some twat on a train mentione it.

sharklet · 19/06/2012 22:50

Actually there are arguments to show the Vikings and even the Welsh were in America before Columbus or Amerigo Vespucco so perhaps the Welsh and the Danes could split America 50 / 50??

And what about the Native Americans??? Oh hang on perhaps like the FAlkland Islanders they should have not rights????

Latara · 19/06/2012 22:50

We could give Argentina the Faulkland Islands... wherever they are.
But we'll keep the actual Falkland Islands as the residents want to remain British.

Maybe the Argentinians should give Argentina 'back' to the Mayans or whoever the indigenous peoples were....

I think the French should be made to return Normandy to British control personally.... we did own part of France for a few centuries so 'we were there first sort of'.... :o

Surely the US mainland should owned by the native Americans? What about Hawaii? New Zealand and Maoris? Australia and Aborigines?

Heaven only knows what will happen in the Middle East and Israel!

It's rare to see such a Roman Catholic view as that in OP (Papal edict being the only basis for a claim).

edam · 19/06/2012 22:53

I assume the Argentinian leader is kicking up a fuss about the Falklands in order to impress the voters at home - there must be elections coming up. Nasty cow is putting pressure on other Latin American countries to stop trade with the Falklands and interfere with shipping. You'd think that a country that had very recent experience of dictatorship would value the right to self-determination but apparently not.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 19/06/2012 22:54

Ahem, Parthenon Marbles thankyouverymuch plus Cyprus is nicely independent and both Greece and Turkey can butt out :P

notnanny · 19/06/2012 22:54

Taken from Wiki An English captain made the first recorded landing in 1690, and France and Britain subsequently established settlements. British troops ejected Argentine forces in a short war in 1982 Britain claimed the whole of the Falkands in 1765, while France transferred its settlement to Spain in 1767. Although Britain withdrew from its settlement in 1774 on economic grounds, it never relinquished its claim to sovereignty.

so that's settled then. It's ours. Unless it was inhabited by natives, but I very much doubt it as it's extremely remote.

latara, I think the boot is on the other foot with the Normans - they (famously) conquered us.
