To ask why some people think McDonalds is the devils food?

What have some people got so against it?

I use macdonalds not so much as a treat but more when I really cannot be bothered or we're back really late which usually comes once a month. Everytime I go it's always really busy, weekends it's absolutely full of kids so people must be eating it and they're not all dead/obese/chav scum. So why is it so frowned upon by some?

ofcourse Mcdonalds is devils food, but everyone knows it is devils food.

if i want a heathy lunch, i will pack a picnic. if i cba i will grab a chippy

LucieMay · 08/06/2012 01:16

@Sydneysuze McDonalds and other fast food burger chains are not food as far as I'm concerned - it's processed plastic with flavourings added. Why would you eat that or feed it to your children?

Because we're not MC.

It also leads to extensive deforestation to raise beef and corn crops, which are often subjected to horrific conditions, in developing countries, not to mention the rocketing levels of diabetes in Western countries - why eat this crap???

I don't give a shite, to be honest with you.

AmberLeaf · 08/06/2012 02:29

I cook and eat all types of food, I cook 'from scratch' and enjoy a varied diet.

But McDonalds at the right moment is delicious.

I respect anyones choice to not eat it, but when people say it tastes 'crap' or 'of cardboard' I just think foodsnob.

It is what it is.

Burger king on the other hand is shit and the BK premises are usually dirty and smell of rubbish IME

balotelli · 08/06/2012 06:25

cant think of one single reason why you want to eat that crap.
Fat, sugar, salt content is ridiculous, nutritional value virtually nil. Staff paid minimum wage while expected to work long hours in crap conditions. Cause vast amounts of litter all over surrounding areas. Enviromental destruction of vast tracts of rain forrest. Dubious 'contracts' with olympic organisers.
The list is almost endless with no redeeming features.
Evil, evil evil corporation.
HATE them with a passion

Noqontrol · 08/06/2012 08:13

Completely agree balotelli not only is the food (if you can call it that) crap tasting salted cardboard, but the environmental destruction caused by them is horrendous.

BIWItheBold · 08/06/2012 08:29

Nice, intelligent and open-minded attitude there, LucieMay Hmm

Absolutely nothing to do with being middle class (I'm sure there's plenty of shit being eaten and cooked by middle class families) and everything to do with the nature of the business itself, and the quality of its food. High levels of carbohydrate, sugar and salt do not a great meal make. But worse:

This book exposes the very unpleasant side of McDonalds, as well as other fast food providers

I don't mind a McDonald's meal occasionally - but I'm very aware of their business practices and it s something I tend to avoid because of that.

summerintherosegarden · 08/06/2012 08:38

Er... LucieMay...you don't give a shite about climate change, animal cruelty OR the diabetes epidemic? Exactly which global problems do you give a shite about? Confused

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 08:42

It isn't the devils food. It's a burger and fries. Me and my son have it around twice a month when we are out. He likes it and so do I.

It's also great hangover food Grin

If you don't want to eat it then don't. Don't judge those that do though

Maamekin · 08/06/2012 08:44

I took DD there the other evening after we had been swimming.

She had chicken pieces (they weren't nuggets, seemed a bit posher), fruit bag and orange juice - her choice btw, I would have let her have chips Grin.
I had a cheeseburger, chips and a coffee.

We could have eaten at the pool instead...hotdogs, chips, probably some sort of fizzy drink. Certainly from my point of view McDonalds is just as good/better, and I got to sit on a nice leather sofa rather than in a hot, chlorine scented swimming pool cafe.

Yes, junk food all the time is not good. No, Macdonalds is not the only purveyor of junk, by a long shot. But their name seems to be absolutely synonymous with bad food Hmm. I fail to see how the food there is worse than in most other chains. Even places where they serve "nice" food to adults tend to have ill-thought out, chips and nuggets laden menus for children, normally in much bigger portions. At least the McDonalds Happy Meals seem more appropriately sized for a child.

Whatmeworry · 08/06/2012 08:46

Mind you, they have improved hugely in the last decade and they sell froot shoots

I'm anti-MD and others like it because of the environmental aspect.
Rolling in money and able to afford it? Nope. Struggle to get to the end of the month with enough to buy food sometimes, but this is an issue that matters, big-time, to me.
The way I see it, we have only one planet, it's not all that big and it's not coping very well. I still need to live on it, and so do my kids. Therefore, if there's going to be somewhere habitable for them, I need to mind what I do.
I watch all aspects of our food shop - food miles, fair trade, organic - and yes, it makes it a bit more expensive, but I do it full in the knowledge that there are a bunch of people all over the world with far less than me who would be grateful to buy any food at all. The least I can do is buy stuff that might help them out a bit (fair prices, not contribute to flooding them out of their homes etc).
Those big chains have a lot of rainforest destruction to answer for, so i don't buy it. I worked for an environmental charity who work in the area where the cattle ranching took place -I've seen for myself the people living in dire poverty on the side of the road unable to make a living off their land because it was confiscated to sell to these companies (and the sale proceeds didn't make it back to them). I've seen the dust bowls which should have been forest helping to regulate water supplies. I'm not helping to support it.

I've explained my environmental reasoning, but I want to point out that if you don't go along with it, that's your choice. I'm not preaching or saying I'm perfect. I'm explaining a food choice clearly and in detail. Because for some reason, people assume that you can't be environmentally friendly if you are short of money and that it's a middle class snobbery. To which I say, bullshit.
I keep my house in decent order because if I don't, bits of it will stop working and it will gradually become unfit to love in. Same applies to the earth. Only we can't move house at the end of it.

NakedButNotFamous · 08/06/2012 09:02

It's not great food but I don't see how it's any different to a lot of places you probably take your kids to. Pub lunch? Trust me, unless it's cooked by a proper chef then it's crap and no better than what McD's serve.

fatlazymummy · 08/06/2012 09:07

I am a vegetarian, so wouldn't really want to eat much in the way of 'fast foods' anyway. When I did eat meat I ate a few Mc Donalds meals, and wasn't fussed either way. I personally don't take my kids in there as the smell makes me feel a bit sick, but they do occassionally eat there with their Dad/friends etc. and that doesn't really bother me.
I wouldn't say it's the devils food, but it's probably best eaten as an occassional 'treat' [for those who actually like it].

Whatmeworry · 08/06/2012 09:09

You lot are going to save the planet by not eating a bread roll and meat patty with a bit of sauce and lettuce on it from McD?

Wow, now that is true commitment to a cause.

Where is Tom Lehrer when we need him....

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 09:10

Naked pubs don't have billions to spend on aggressive marketing or outlets/drive throughs every which way you turn. They don't cause massive environmental damage or contribute to the diabetes/obesity epidemic on such a massive scale.

We can all say well my kids are ok but 1 third of children aren't and our taxes are paying for it,our NHS is suffering for it.It's going to get massively worse sadly.

moonbells · 08/06/2012 09:15

I used to eat the nuggets once upon a time, and even burgers, but when I realised I didn't actually like beef very much, I stopped. Ditto when told the nuggets were mechanically-reclaimed and bleached meat (yuck). I think being told that the fries had absolutely no potato in helped (dunno if that's an urban myth, but...) and looking at the calories in a bananananana milk shake! I have no idea how much these things might have changed for the better, but...

Can't remember the last time I went. Probably about 15 years ago. Last KFC was in 2001 when DP and I were in the States, and I do get occasional urges to buy one, but have so far resisted. If I see a chicken mayo burger advertised on a billboard and go mmmm... I tend to go to the supermarket and buy whole-breast breaded chicken and make my own!

Think I know what supper's going to be tonight. Thanks a bunch... Hmm Grin

babybythesea · 08/06/2012 09:25

Nope, not going to save the planet by not eating McDs. But it's not the only thing I do to do my bit.
Neither will I save the planet on my own.
It doesn't abdicate my responsibility towards it.

Everybody who eats in McD's makes an individual choice. And therefore contributes. I won't be the only one who chooses not to (in fact, I know I'm not). Therefore that's a bit less money to fuel their destruction.

Why is trying to look after the environment something to mock? I don't get it. Do you not want a healthy planet?

Badvoc · 08/06/2012 09:33

Because its junk food? The clue is in the term "junk" You get very few vits and minerals from McDs and lots and lots of saturated fat, very high levels of sodium (salt to you and me!) and anything deep fried is not very healthy is it?

I think every now and again is ok - everything in moderation - but to suggest its "good" food is ridiculous!

Badvoc · 08/06/2012 09:34
Foshizzle · 08/06/2012 09:36

Well quite right. Why bother doing anything to declare any kind of support or opposition to anything. What is the point. Really. Best not to have any kind of views or opinions and even better not to act on them if you do.

I'm not sure I've ever seen this vigorous a defence of Nestlé. Not sure why McDonalds is more deserving.

porcamiseria · 08/06/2012 09:39

snobbery
easy target

that said, the food IS shite!!!!

and they are chav @ hoody mecca , dont care what anyon says, they are. fact

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 09:43

Fosh the Nestle thing is what I don't understand.People make out that they care about other people's babies in third world countries but don't give a stuff re children in their own and other developed countries.

I loath the MN double standards on this. All out for the Let Girl's Be Girls campaign but couldn't give a stuff re childhood obesity even though it causes waaaaay more damage(obesity costs the NHS more than smoking does).

Re the toys I actually know families that have made repeated trips to McDs to collect whole sets of toys.HmmMcD use toys to make kids eat more junk and it's wrong. If you go in as a family and order several Happy Meals they all get the same toy in an attempt to make you return the following week to get the next.Very wrong.I suspect there are questions re working conditions for all these Chinese made toys too.
