To ask why some people think McDonalds is the devils food?

What have some people got so against it?

I use macdonalds not so much as a treat but more when I really cannot be bothered or we're back really late which usually comes once a month. Everytime I go it's always really busy, weekends it's absolutely full of kids so people must be eating it and they're not all dead/obese/chav scum. So why is it so frowned upon by some?

I don't remember eating there in the last couple of years but previously I would find myself suddenly wanting one every few months. The idea would make me salivate but the reality was always so disappointing. The fries would often be tepid and soft, the burger would have a sort of sugary taste and within 10 minutes of finishing i'd feel like it was sitting in my stomach like a compacted ball of lard and id have a greasy taste on my lips that just wouldn't go away.

I guess I've given up trying now, although I expect my kids will insist on it when they are old enough. I'm sure they will love it but I think the sugary flavours are designed to excite children's palates. Until then there are lots of places that sell really good burgers so I go to them if I need a fix.

DailyMailSpy · 08/06/2012 09:48

Don't they get their meat from factory farms? Watching fast food nation put me right off, and if my DS eats a happy meal he hits the roof too.

Foshizzle · 08/06/2012 09:50

To be fair I actually fully accept that people - my DC included - will go there and will 'enjoy' the food, but if you do, then at least understand what it is you are making yourself a part of. And yes exactly if you're going to make a big deal about Nestle then understand how McDonalds is just as bad.

And don't sneer when other people want to try and make things better.

And unless I'm historically mistaken, public action and opposition is not particularly the domain of the middle classes...

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 09:54

I've read that 1 burger contains meat from a lot of different cows so tracing meat origins must be hard and the environmental impact must be huge.

There is also the culture impact McD et al have on other countries eg in Asia where people move away from their own cuisine and buy into the global Western diet and it's accompanying health concerns.

Also McD seems to have different food standards in diff countries.I don't like supporting shite in other countries eg banned substances just because standards are better in ours. Our £ still goes onto support the McD and the subsequent damage it does around the world.

juneau · 08/06/2012 09:57

It is the devil's food. It's addictive, it's nutritionally poor, it's highly processed and full of fat and sugar. In fact, its a great example of precisely what humans are NOT designed to eat. And the restaurants stink of old grease.

ScrambledSmegs · 08/06/2012 09:59

Personal experience : I hadn't eaten there in years (due to ethical issues/concern about health) but morning sickness and Macdonalds being right next to the hospital Hmm means I ate there 3 times in a month. I really liked the wraps and they helped the ms no end (all the salt? Maybe). It was delicious Blush.

However, I went in there with DD (2.2yo) last time. She had chicken nuggets and chips (plus veggies brought in with us), and 30 minutes later was horribly sick. She's rarely, if ever, sick normally. Ive since spoken to other parents of toddlers who've had similar experiences. It's really put me off feeding it to kids.

Whatmeworry · 08/06/2012 10:01

And don't sneer when other people want to try and make things better.

There is making things better, and there is fashionable righteous middle class snobbery.

The trick is to know the difference.

(Hint) You can feel the middle class snobbery dripping off this thread like all that planet-killing grease off a Big Mac :o

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 10:05

What that's rather a snobby view ie that only the mc care about McD and all that goes with it-the environment, working conditions, childhood obesity, diabetes, aggressive marketing etc.

So we're all mc because we care, don't the wc care, how do you know we're all mc,not sure I am?

Yummymummyyobe1 · 08/06/2012 10:06

I am against MacDonalds as it is poor quality food. xx

babybythesea · 08/06/2012 10:06

Or perhaps, the trick is to dismiss something you don't agree with as snobbery, and therefore sneer at it.

stopthinkingsomuch · 08/06/2012 10:09

Because if you avoid it then it's a quick win to superior parenting in some eyes!!!

Foshizzle · 08/06/2012 10:10

You lot are going to save the planet by not eating a bread roll and meat patty with a bit of sauce and lettuce on it from McD?

Yes and this is the language of general apathy.

Whether or not the responses on this thread are from the middle classes really makes no difference to what McDonalds is. The OP asked why some people think it's the devil's food. People are trying to demonstrate why. The trial wasn't about class. The trial was about facts that could not be bullied away.

LucieMay · 08/06/2012 10:20

It doesn't trouble me that the "intelligent open minded" mc McDonald's deniers chose not to eat there, but it does trouble me that they judge other people who do when then they launch into their earnest humanitarian rants about the evils of the corporate fast food again, because yep not visiting McDonald's will surely contribute to saving the planet. If you're going to rebuke me for not having beliefs, get off your arse and do something about them rather than tapping away furiously on an internet forum about how virtuous you are.

trixymalixy · 08/06/2012 10:31

My kids have allergies, chains like McDonalds have good allergy info that you can trust, so we tend to stop there if we are en route somewhere.

We stopped at tebay services once, which is lovely with a farm shop. They were great and very helpful trying to find something they could eat and in the end made something from scratch for the kids, but it must have added about an hour onto our journey. so we stick to McDs or BK now!!

AmberLeaf · 08/06/2012 10:37

It isn't the devils food though, obviously its not highly nutritious but everyone knows that.

What most seem to be debating are the ethics of McDs as a corporation which is fair enough, but tbh I just switch off when I read nonsense about there not being any potato in the fries! Etc

It is fasionable to be anti mcds and although I know some people view it seriously an awful lot of people are just jumping on the bandwagon.

Lucie people are replying to the op which asks why some people think McDonalds is the devil's food Hmm.

Also why do you think McD had to stop spraying their fries with sugar in this country, improve their meat in this country, reduce the salt in this country etc, etc?

That would be because of people like those who have replied to the op "tapping away". Sharing knowledge and views is always a good thing,it increases pressure on companies like McDonalds who do immense damage to health and helps to create improvements.

Mcdonalds spends millions on advertising, those who look between the million pound funded glossy ads that twist and hide the truth are perfectly entitled to do so.

stealthsquiggle · 08/06/2012 10:41

I would love to examine the complete diets and shopping habits of people who class McD's as an "Evil, evil evil corporation" (well, I wouldn't, because life is too short, but YKWIM). Whilst I admire anyone who holds true to their principles, I do suspect that the vast majority a lot of McD's haters are not those people, and McD's is just an easy target.

We do occasionally have McD's - I wouldn't class it as an especially cheap way to feed the DC, but it is consistent and clean wherever you are in the world, and TBH I would rather that than eat in some small independent where I have no idea of their standards of sourcing or cooking or cleanliness. Better the devil you know.

If you have the time and the lifestyle to be able to eat only food which adheres to all of your principles then good for you, but don't judge those of us who don't. I would never dare to feed other people's DC McD's, for example, for fear of the backlash, but I would bet it is no worse in environmental or health terms than a lot of the cheap party food which they have served to my DC.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 08/06/2012 10:48

I have never ever been in a MD .
I hate queueing for food. I want to sit down and be served.
And I don't want to eat somewhere with a load of kids and teenagers.

Lucie also I've asked the ASA to check out the new Fruitizz adverts which claim to be 1 of 5 a day(when made from concentrate, always been under the assumption that concentrate doesn't count). It may be perfectly legit but I'd rather they checked it out just to be sure as I don't agree with duping parents to shift cheap products.

I personally don't just sit on my arse and type either.Grin

Mopswerver · 08/06/2012 11:01

People do this all the time. Demonise food. NO food is bad. McDonalds is a bit of a leader in the field these days and I take my hat off to them re: how they have changed their restaurants and a great deal of their food whilst not scaring off their "original" clientele.

I know Mums who think of it as tantamount to child abuse...and yet feed their children on ...pasta, pasta & more pasta (with jar of cheap sauce!).
McDonalds on the other hand use 100% beef, grilled, or organic breast chicken! Ooooh, Devil's food!

Yes, I know there will always be some who eat it every day, 2 burgers at a time etc (I even heard one chap ask for the gherkin to be taken out as he didn't eat vegetables!) but used as most people do, it is no different to going to any restaurant and ordering something and chips for the kids (& prob more wholesome than many!).
....and you can't beat their Egg Mc Muffins Wink

Whatmeworry · 08/06/2012 11:06

If you are going to demonise McD, you have to - if you going to be consistent - demonise all fast food restaurants, the low cost food industry, the entire cheap plastic toy industry, all food companies that plough up rainforests to grow various crops, and the entire packeged foods in shops industry as it is all the same supply chain.

If you are just going to froth about McD and ignore the rest, then you are merely following a fashionable middle class fad, and I seriously question your motives.

As someone else said above, then its a low effort grab at superior parenting kudos.

Katiepoes · 08/06/2012 11:07

I'm on my way there in a few minutes with a list from my colleagues. We'll all enjoy it very much.

(what's more I'm driving even though it's only a ten minute walk)

Do I have to leave MN now?

Rockpool · 08/06/2012 11:09

Mops plenty of foods are bad sorry.

Also McDonalds chicken isn't organic,it isn't even free range and Peta aren't happy with how they kill their chickens. The food they feed the masses of chickens they use also has an environmental impact.

Chicken nuggets are also only 45% chicken(and a load of other flavour enhancers, salt, sugar etc).

You've bought into the pretty patchwork advertising.
