So there is a important football match coming up. DH is a big fan and is going. Unfortunately it is on dd's 5th birthday. She does not want to go. So now mil, fil dh and ds are all going to the football.
AIBU to be sad that everyone is going to the football on dd's birthday or am a being plb.

I'm curious. Do you all cancel every activity on your DCs birthdays? We carry on pretty much as normal with Cubs, swimming, orchestra's etc and find a good time or day to celebrate together.

hairylemon · 17/05/2012 15:37

Same here Muststart, Ds1 goes to nursery as normal even though on his last bday both me and dp were off work, its a normal day with presents thrown in and a bday tea, then we'll do something on another day when we can see the gps/rest of family.

IAmNotACowbag · 17/05/2012 16:02

I think carrying on with normal life is slightly different to choosing to do a leisure activity over celebrating a birthday - work/school/nursery aren't optional parts of life as such, more "essential", whereas going off to do a leisure activity is optional.

IAmNotACowbag · 17/05/2012 16:05

I don't see it as twattish to want a fuss made of you on your birthday. I get why some people don't really care, but it's not fair to declare a person a "twat" because they like to celebrate.

Ithinkitsjustme · 17/05/2012 16:06

I think that going to trampolining/ football practice/ swimming lesson etc count as leisure activities, just as much as going to a football match. I really don't get why this is such a big deal. It's a birthday, if she hadn't been told when it was she wouldn't even know. I'd have been tempted to put it off until the next day tbh.

IAmNotACowbag · 17/05/2012 16:07

trampolining/ football practice/ swimming lesson

I understand what you are saying but these are lessons not a day out leisure activity.

PullUpAPew · 17/05/2012 16:12

cowbag my sister is a twat about her birthday, trust me. It is fair for me to describe her as a twat because she is my sister and she thinks I am a twat for various reasons (although obviously she is mistaken Grin)

I like to celebrate on the day, but I don't give presents back with explanations of why I don't like them nor do I moan about the food others have made for me - which my sister does (she's in her 40s). My point was her behaviour has nothing to do with my sister being spoilt in the birthday department as a child - she wasn't.

As I said upthread in my own family unit it would just not be thought of to do something other than be with our kids on their birthday (work, health, studies excepting) because I do think their birthday takes precedence over all other social things.

IAmNotACowbag · 17/05/2012 16:16

Ah I see pullup! There are a few twatty things there Grin

PullUpAPew · 17/05/2012 16:21

She's an embarrassment tbh!

exoticfruits · 17/05/2012 16:28

I don't see a problem - have a lovely day out yourselves.

shopping81 · 17/05/2012 17:27

I wouldn't cancel prepaid activities for a birthday. Therefore had dd's birthday been on a Saturday I would still take dc to their Swimming Lesson and dd to her dance lesson. They are things that we have made a commitment to for the whole year.
I know we will still have a lovely day and I will not make a big thing of it.

Well we had a nice day. Went to a play area and had a nice lunch.
They won btw.

Glad you had a nice day, happy birthday to your DD.

exoticfruits · 20/05/2012 19:14

Glad it worked out. I always see football as a great opportunity for a quiet day out.

FanOfSlippers · 20/05/2012 19:14

Hi OP, glad you and your daughter had a good time!

Also, this isn't your fault or anything, but thanks for starting what became one of the most funny, childish threads I've read for ages. Some of the pro-football vs anti-football bickering was brilliant, just like overhearing a bunch kids argue.

"You're wrong"
"No you're wrong"
"But you're wronger"
"Your mum"
etc etc

The main participants (you and we know who you are) should be v.v.proud.

:o
