to send a nearly 9 year old 100 yards down the road to the chip shop

having left over roast beef and chips for tea but had no frozen chips in yes I know I'm a slattern but it is sunday so sent DD, who will be 9 next month down to the chippy which is on my road, to fetch a bag of chips

she was 'escorted' home by a woman who had happened to be in the chippy and though I was totally unreasonable to let her go to the chip shop by herself at that time of night (it was ten to six when she went)

have I totally lost it in my ability to make reasonable decisions about my child's safety or is she a nut job?

No YADNBU.

Enjoy the chips!

PeppaTwig · 13/05/2012 18:32

I would have done it when I was 8 but it does seem to be a bit Hmm these days. Not sure if YAB or not...

tinkertitonk · 13/05/2012 18:32

YABU. Feeding chips to your children does them no favours.

wishiwasonholiday · 13/05/2012 18:32

Yadnbu

usualsuspect · 13/05/2012 18:32

Really? She sounds like a loon I would have told her to mind her own bloody business

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/05/2012 18:33

Yanbu

nocake · 13/05/2012 18:33

She's a nut job. It's up to you to decide if your child is responsible enough.

workshy · 13/05/2012 18:34

the occasional chip has never killed anyone yet (especially 1 bag shared between 3 every 8 weeks or so)

OP posts:
pictish · 13/05/2012 18:34

She's a nutjob that needs to feel important.

winnybella · 13/05/2012 18:34

YANBU. The woman is a nutter.

Does everyone doesn't let their children out alone til they are 15? Confused

insancerre · 13/05/2012 18:36

YANBU
You should have threatened to have the woman nutter arrested for child abduction

NettoSuperstar · 13/05/2012 18:37

YANBU.
I've been sending DD to the shop since she was 7.

elvisaintdead · 13/05/2012 18:39

yanbu - I would be more concerned about an adult, unknown to my DC, marching them home tbh. Mine have been told it is fine to be rude to strangers who try to intercept them for their own safety them so she would have got short shrift if she had tried it with them.

All kids, areas, streets and parents are different and it comes down to personal judgement

cocoachannel · 13/05/2012 18:40

I'm not sure which is more odd, the woman escorting your DD home

bibbitybobbitybunny · 13/05/2012 18:41

That smartarse reply from tinkertitonk absolutely sums up why I fucking hate Mumsnet most of the time these days. Stupid, inane, unintelligent, ill thought-out comments like that do my head in.

bronze · 13/05/2012 18:42

I send both my nine an seven year olds (not always together) to the garage the same kind of distance

cocoachannel · 13/05/2012 18:43

sorry, my DD hit post before I could finish...

or the assertion that chips do your DCs no favours!?

LadyBeagleEyes · 13/05/2012 18:44

Grin bibbity.
I sort of thought the same. Grin

AllYoursBabooshka · 13/05/2012 18:44

Couldn't agree more bibbity.

YANBU OP, Enjoy your chips!

usualsuspect · 13/05/2012 18:45

What bibbity said

millpond · 13/05/2012 18:46

YANBU You are teaching your child to be independent which is very important, I wonder at some peoples views on letting children out alone that a whole generation of people will be raised who cannot function in the world as they are so protected by parents who are afraid of everything.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 13/05/2012 18:46

God, I love chip shop chips and salt and vinegar. OP YADNBU and tinkertit is vvvvvU

FermezLaBouche · 13/05/2012 18:47

Well said, bibbity!

AnnieLobeseder · 13/05/2012 18:47

Really bibbity? I assumed tinker was trying to be funny.

As for the OP, I would hope that DD would employ the tactic I have taught her to use when a stranger tries to make her go anywhere with them - scream loudly!!!

The women is a nutter!!!!

GColdtimer · 13/05/2012 18:48

I agree with bibbibity. Seem to be thinking that a lot these days Grin
