Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

The flank is located directly beneath the loin, posterior to (behind) the short plate. It accounts for approximately 6% of carcass weight. The flank contains no bones. Although quite flavorful, it is tough meat with a good deal of fat and connective tissue. Flank meat is usually trimmed and ground, with the exception of the flank steak or London broil. The flank also contains a small piece of meat known as the hanging tenderloin. Although not actually part of the tenderloin, it is very tender and can be cooked using any method.

It is probably the cheapest part of meat that they could purchase and it has to be ground, fine it is 100% meat, but it isn't a cut I would buy from the butcher as it is not going to be very nice to eat. Flank steak would be just about ok - if cooked properly.

Some people like rump steak, other prefer ribeye. I like a whole steak if I am going to eat beef - which is rare anyway as I don't often eat steaks of beef or pork.

But I would rather eat a whole piece of meat that taste good or beef that is a decent cut and cooked well to get flavour.

That is my choice though and it you like the taste of food from other parts of the cow then so be it.

And the reason they spend billions on advertising is because they are worried about loosing market share because. When in effect the two top cola brands tend to just keep about the same levels no matter how much they spend

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:42

Most figures put the value of between 40-50% of advertising spend is just wasted.

curiousgeorgie · 03/05/2012 22:42

I must just go off topic and say that I absolutely 100% love McDonald's... I've been vegetarian my whole life and so up until my current age (29) had never had one... I went through the drive through (under duress) with DH the other week and reluctantly asked for a cheeseburger with no burger in it.

Jesus Christ.

It's literally the best thing I've ever had in my mouth. Soft amazing bun, pickely goodness smothered in special sauce dotted with onions and melted deliciousness they call american cheese... Mmmmmm...

I'm now addicted.

Im very ashamed to say that my addiction as led to my DD having 3 happy meals in the last three weeks as I seek out my new addiction.

At least it's not crack eh? Grin

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:44

inorder to capture the 50 % you want to attract to actually see an advert you are paying for huge amounts of extra disinterested never going to pay attention or whom already are your customers.

southeastastra · 03/05/2012 22:44

they put crack cocaine i the buns, did none of you watch fastfoodnation?

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 22:45

So what group are you in Aitch?
And what do they persuade you to buy?
'Cos you can just ignore you know.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:45

so you think that if coke and pepsi were to stop all advertising, the soda market would remain entirely static and there would be no movement at all in the top ten drinks?

ivykaty44 · 03/05/2012 22:46

now coke did ued to have cok in the receipe

ivykaty44 · 03/05/2012 22:48

40-50% of advertising spend is just wasted.

But that means that 50-60% of the money is worthwhile spending

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:49

link to some of these figures, novack, will you?

well i'm not an early adopter, i'm a phase 2 kinda gal. don't like to ally myself with the on-trend product (say iphones for example) which actually means that i'm catnip to android type stuff, technologically-speaking, and very susceptible to advertising that is 'non-advertising' (but still, crucially, absolutely advertising Grin). i think of myself as a canny shopper, so anything designed to appeal to a canny shopper (ie most basic shops) will appeal to me. it's not very complicated.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:51

ell considering Red Bull is not in either brands stable the total would proably stay the same but with a slight market share adjustment

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:52

what kind of places do you shop at, LBE? i'm sure you're going to say that you go where the best price is etc etc etc but where is that, exactly? and what education do you have? how much money coming into the house? how many kids? what work role? etc

not that i expect you to tell me all that, obv. but you're off your head if you don't think that information is out there about you and being used to encourage you to choose one product over another.

but yeah. you can say no. and buy the other product. which is also trying to get you to buy it. Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:52

links, novack. no offence, but nothign you have said so far would make me think you weren't kinda talking out yer arse... Grin

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:54

So you keep saying.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:55

so, a link?

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 22:56

Right back at you Aitch.
Obviously your'e convinced that advertising rules your life.
I still don't believe it rules mine.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:57

obviously i'm convinced that advertising rules my life?

where on EARTH did you read that? Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 23:01

Because you said that we're all stupid if we don't realise that basically all our decisions are made through ads.
So just assumed you were one of us.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 23:03

Aitch do you have access to McKinsey?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 23:03

sorry, i don't understand your last post at all.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 23:04

no, Novack. do you? is that where there's evidence that; "Most advertising does not work and has little of no effect except in the eye of the ad execs who are tying to persuad a company they they can "remarkabalize their organization" by the use ofo straw man arguments shot odwn by spurious facts about your corporation. I bit like pad pieces in newspapers aimed at their demographic e'g outrage about immigrants for the Daily Fail masses, restaurant chains for the Guardian and anything involving impending doom for the FOXY news Fascistas.2

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 23:07

i've looked back, LBE. the only time i mention stupid was with ref to the posts that there are more serious things going on in the world than this (and no doubt there are).

i genuinely think you're getting me mixed up with another poster.

but hey, i've just realised that this is late on a friday night... classic time of the week for major crazy on threads, my bafflement is now unbaffled... so i'm out of here. enjoy yourselves, all!

Um, really Aitch.
I'm just following the thread and your posts.
And I asked what 'advertising' group you were in.
If you don't understand my points that's your problem.
Can I repeat, if we're all influenced by advertising, you are too.

Getting bored now.
