Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

that seems to be the case usual suspect cos you is all too thick to do the right thing Hmm

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 21:52

Sooooo if nobody is influenced by advertising why do companies spend billions on it?

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 21:53

Pringles, the Nestlé thing is about them aggressively promoting formula feeding in third world countries, causing childhood deaths and malnutrition..

I think people are influenced by advertising , but to say that poorer people are influenced more is a tad insulting .

Actually I would say the more money you have ,the greater the power of advertising.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 21:57

Yes, 'cos us thickos all need protected from the power of advertising by some of the caring and thinking posters on this thread.
But who is going to protect them? Grin

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 21:59

Oh I believe others are sucked in by the ads, it just ain't me. Unless it is super glossy and aspirational like a mulberry handbag, or glossy clothes, or hair, or makeup I ain't really that interested. But that being said I don't go out an purchase the above!

I do however love a catalogue through the door Wink

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 21:59

You tell me MrsHeffley? How do you avoid it?

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 21:59

They need protecting from bloody twee Cath Kidston overpriced shite Grin

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 22:04

Got to love a bit of CK

I don't seem to have any.........................

vogonmothership · 03/05/2012 22:05

When DS was in neonatal intensive care I stayed in Ronald MacDonald charity parent facilities.
So whenever we go in to feed our faces use the bog we but money in the swirly charity box

It's a cafe. Get over yourself.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:06

gawd, what IS going on here? you do understand that adverts are targeted at certain groups, don't you?

PoohBearsHole · 03/05/2012 22:08

aitch

Yup and I am above it all Grin

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:08

I want to know which of MrsHeffley's posts was deleted?

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 22:08

I'm not in any group though Aitch.
And yes I do understand.
I'm not thick you know.

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 22:08

No Lady why do companies spend billions on advertising?

southeastastra · 03/05/2012 22:09

i don't see it about other posters thinking others are thickos or need protecting

its just a weird sponsor for mn to have, as would be any parenting site (worth its salt fnar)

working with children we have to push the 'healthy eating' part so much yet it seems the media generally couldn't care less, what our agenda is.

there's is driven by sales but i think if mn resist the mddollar they could attact more sales from companies who some posters, at least could identify with

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:09

So I an ignore the vagisil and odour suppressing evax ones then????

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 22:10

What advertising does for most people I know, is show them what choices there are out there.

No-one's forced into making those choices just because they've seen some adverts.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:11

lolol, of COURSE you're in a group. wtf? you will definitely belong to an advertising demographic, how can you not? this is absolutely crazy.

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 22:11

Ronald McDonald parent facilities makes me want to run screaming... Can you not see how desperately wrong that is?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:12

no, no-one's forced. but ads create markets that simply didn't exist before, and influences us in the choices that we make. honestly, any suggestion that is doesn't is just madness.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 22:14

Yes they do MrsH.
But if they don't influence me and they don't influence you, it's all a bit of a waste of money, isn't it?

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 22:14

Of course it does Aitch. I just don't get why people don't get it.. Twit.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 03/05/2012 22:17

i think it's too l late for you judging from your posts ladybeagle Wink

but we can save others

MrsHeffley · 03/05/2012 22:18

Yes I'd like to know which post was deleted,I'm totally bewildered.

Was it the one when I described my teaching experience which is no different to the newspaper article I linked to or a lot of research?

Kind of find it slightly upsetting that I've tried to be civil, polite and measured in my posts and have received some quite nasty, vitriolic, bullying insults but a post of mine (of which I can't for the life of me think could go against guidelines) gets deleted.

ConfusedThink it's time I went to bed.
