Mumsnet and McDonalds

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 08:13

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

I am well aware I am in a demographic somewhere but I also think I am probably more of a "like to know" whats on the market, very much what worra has mentioned.

I like to make an informed decision about what I am purchasing in the main which is why I subscribe (much to dh's disgust Grin) to Which magazine. Still think their ads are naff though Wink

I do like the ads for new tv programmes though, am a complete sucker for them which is probably where I lie in the demographic, however I tend to either fast forward the ads or go and do something in the break. However if I am around I don't really feel like I am influenced a great deal by many of the tv adverts I see.

Ok, will admit to Lindor Chocolates making my mouth water Smile

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:18

SOME adverts will influence you, some will influence me, some will influence MrsH, some will influence two of us, some all three, some none. it's just basic demographics, the ads will catch those who they're designed to catch, and the people will hardly notice it.

when btw did mrsh say that she wasn't influenced by ads, ladybeagleeyes? you had me down as saying it for a while... of course i never did cos i would never be that bonkers.

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 22:19

I can assure you Aitch, I'm not in any group.
Advertising may have tried to put me in one, though if they have, it hasn't worked.

tattychicken · 03/05/2012 22:20

Mrs H. You spoke well. I have no idea either. Maybe McDonalds disapproved.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:20

oh that's just so unimaginably silly, LBE. just utterly ridiculous.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:20

Well not seen any valid research from you all day so maybe it was a potty mouthed one.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:22

oh fgs, mrsh has been really, really, really polite in the face of considerable nastiness. i really cannot believe this thread, it's a disgrace. i don't agree with what tatty and mrsh and others were saying regarging mn's association with mcdonald's but they are making valid points. Hmm

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:26

Most advertising does not work and has little of no effect except in the eye of the ad execs who are tying to persuad a company they they can "remarkabalize their organization" by the use ofo straw man arguments shot odwn by spurious facts about your corporation. I bit like pad pieces in newspapers aimed at their demographic e'g outrage about immigrants for the Daily Fail masses, restaurant chains for the Guardian and anything involving impending doom for the FOXY news Fascistas.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 03/05/2012 22:27

What????
That's awful !!!
I'm glad you brought that to our attention!
I'm really unimpressed MNHQ Angry.
Bloody mcshitalls.
I have a friend who is an environmental health inspector - and I kid you not when Mcshitalls say they use 100% beef it is 100% COW . Every last bit of the cow.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:27

bonkers as conkers.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:28

Well i was called deranged for proving with facts and 100% accurate informaton and I never read an apology and yet I have not resorted to name calling?

usualsuspect · 03/05/2012 22:29

Its much the same as the last McDonalds and MN thread.

I still think if it was a more up market place ,more fitting for the supposed MN demographic , no one would give a toss.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:29

In what country do you live Nanny?

southeastastra · 03/05/2012 22:29

in luton market they sell a cow foot for £1.99

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:29

oh i am definitely calling your last post bonkers, absolutely 100%. do you have anything to back any of it up, at all?

southeastastra · 03/05/2012 22:31

i could take a photo? Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:32

i think you're right, usualsuspect. but in a weird way i think that would stem from an ill-advised confidence that the food you are getting in chain restaurants (i'm thinking wagamamas, zizzi, giraffe etc) are nutritionally superior to mcdonalds.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:32

Which post?

to me though usual it's not a class thing

just the government really go get people working with children to go on about healthy eating all the time (with good reason of course Wink) so parenting sites should be a little sensitive to that

LadyBeagleEyes · 03/05/2012 22:34

Woah Aitch, there seems to be an awful lot of bonkers people on this thread that don't agree with you.
Funny that.

rationality · 03/05/2012 22:36

Yes, you're being unreasonable.

NovackNGood · 03/05/2012 22:38

Nearly all soap adverts and even special trainers to supposedly burn more calories work on straw man pricipals.

Tired of constantly scrubbing and toiling to shift hard deep ingrainded stains ( video of sweaty woman working her socks off at sink).

You need blitzitclean, Blitzitclean is the new faster acting cleaner for all know stains. ( cue bright bottle and spangly graphics) ( Note very small white on light colour background...blitzitclean is only faster than old formula blitzitclean)

Do i really need to go on

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:39

not bonkers people... bonkers posts. but yes, really just from you regarding your total immunity to advertising and that last from novack.

it's not really a question of agreeing with me, you do realise that? i don't agree with tatty or mrsh either. i just think that denying that ads have any effect on people is CRAZY.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 22:40

was that to me, novack? yes, you need to go on. remember, you're trying to establish this as fact, with evidence;

"Most advertising does not work and has little of no effect except in the eye of the ad execs who are tying to persuad a company they they can "remarkabalize their organization" by the use ofo straw man arguments shot odwn by spurious facts about your corporation.
